Seville Southern Spain 25 Aug 2013 The day started overcast and with one or 2 spots of rain but by 11 o’clock it was 32 degrees with fluffy white clouds in the sky. After calling my Dad and Tom doing some diary, we walked from the camp site for 10 minutes to the bus stop. We met an Italian family from Bologna, with 11 and 6 y.o. boys who were also going into Seville. We found that we had an hour to wait for the bus so we nearly all caught a taxi but got chatting about travel and before we knew it, it was 11.30am and the bus arrived. After a 30 minute ride, we arrived in the centre of Seville. The Italian family and us were approached by the red Hop-on-hop-off bus company and ... read more

JUEVES (THURSDAY) 20TH JUNE The gates to the Jardines del Real Alcazar (Gardens of the Royal Palace) opened at 9pm, which gave me over an hour to wander them before the concert began at 10:30pm. They were incredible (I'm running out of superlative adjectives!) - spacious, surrounded by a 10m wall. Incorporated into the design was a maze, an additional wall that divided the gardens along which you ...could 'promenade' and see over the whole area, and various 'rooms'. Seats and urns at the end of paths beckoned you to venture along them. Dusk was hastily approaching but some focus plants were lit with uplights. Peacocks pecked at the lawn and made their haunting call. Spring is finishing so many flowers have passed their best, but still could be seen acanthus, canna lillies, cliveas and roses. ... read more

Tuesday 18th - Thursday 20th June I arrived in Sevilla around 11:30 am Tuesday morning after a 45 minute train ride. I left Cordoba feeling much lighter as I had posted home some stuff plus I left 2 pairs of sandals and a t-shirt behind in my room at the hotel. The excellent sandals I had bought in Madrid would more than adequately replace the 2 pairs of sandals that I had brought with me. This meant that I was back to my original 2 bags - my trolley bag and my back pack. Much easier to manipulate on the trains and escalators. I'd also had some washing done - my white jean shorts were looking a bit grey! My first impression of Sevilla, as the taxi drove me from the train station to the hotel, ... read more

Seville was totally unexpected. We had thought it would be pretty good, after all the other lovely places we have been to in Spain, but it is really special. It is a fantastically interesting city and is yet another gap in our education; I guess. If you’d asked me I would have said it was famous for bitter oranges, which it is (exported to the UK for marmalade) and bull fights. It is a great deal more than that. Seville was simply the most important city in the world for a long time after Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas. It was the gateway to and from America, and this, of course, meant unbelievable wealth and commerce. It also meant huge power and influence – the Franciscans benefiting hugely (San Francisco). The city was originally some 80 ... read more

Sevilla, España The inspiration behind Hemmingways, “The Sun Also Rises”. To be precise, in the afternoon it takes a perpetuated waning period where it makes everything orange. That’s the color of theme here. Orange trees. Sheer, flowing plumage that Zara capitalizes on. It is that topaz sheen that covers most of the brown eyes and makes them appear iridescent. That slight bump in the middle of a narrow nose. That is what separates true Spaniards from Mexicans or any other Latino. They have olive skin, not brown. They are brunette, not raven-haired. They are refined. I look to my right, and there is a group of sevillanas that look more welcoming than any local back in my old college town. There, my disposition was unwelcome because my flair for fashion is considered overdressed. Here, I blend ... read more

So on there are 2 assignments due next week. Both are papers no less than 600 words. We have to interview local sevillanosand interview them about the following themes: 1) How has the global economic crisis affected your life/business? 2) What are some differences between the university systems in the United States and Spain? I recently found out that I landed and internship with a Spanish consultant firm. There, my presence will make for the token native English speaker. This will not only let me improve my Spanish my a drastic amount, but the skills of web-develpment and E-commerce will be aquired. Below is a recent email I sent to my mother about the first week in Seville: On Sun, Jan 22, 2012 at 8:09 PM Hey Mom- I am 7 hours ahead of you so ... read more

Before I start to explain why I am here, I would like to explain the motive and the inspiration that drives me to continue traveling and to find purpose in all the treasures the world grants. My name is Allison Kuehn. Though now I am in the romantic city known in literature as Seville, Spain, this has not been my first sojourn away from the states. As a current university student studying abroad, I am a bit older than my counterparts as my first year in college commenced at the age of 21. Now at 23, I still continue to take on challenges and living gyspsy lifestyle is still a passion. Prior to attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, I had been working and traveling as an international fashion model in various cities in the Asian market. ... read more

I haven’t really done anything interesting these last two days. I’ve just been getting adjusted to classes and to living in Seville. It’s starting to hit me that I’m going to be living here for the next few months. It’s now becoming less of a vacation and more like real life with having to go to class and study. The newness of the city is already starting to wear off. I went running yesterday and discovered that running here is very pleasant. There is a lot to look at while running and you can take a million different paths so it never gets old. The only difficult thing is not getting lost. I tend to zone out when I run and not pay attention to where I’m going, so this could really be a problem for ... read more

Today after classes I went with some other people from the program and sat on the steps of this old church and people-watched for a while. Yep, it's the middle of January and it's warm enough here to sit outside and people watch for hours at a time. I'm really not missing Wisconsin weather. Something I really like about Spain thus far is how cheap everything is, including the alcohol. Today I got a 1.5 L bottle of Tinto Vino, which is basically wine and lemonade, for only 1.5 euros, which is a little under $2.00. You can also get what is basically the equivalent of a 40 oz. bottle of beer for 1 euro, which is about $1.30. At the bars you can get a glass of beer and a shot for 2 euros ($2.40), ... read more
