Granada was our last sightseeing city. We walked the streets of Old Town, spending more time in the shops and less in the cathedrals. This time we explored without a guide, as we had in the other cities. Granada a beautiful city. With the snow capped Sierra Nevada mountains and the Alhambra, as its back drop, and the narrow cobblestone streets, the photo ops were endless. We spent time in the Alcaiceria, once a silk market, but now full of souvenir shops; it reminded me a little of the souk in Israel. Taking a break from walking in a Morrocan style tea shop on the Rua de Casas de Cha, was delicious... the tea of course but also the crepes and baklava style pastries. We walked through the Albayzin, with winding narrow streets of the Moorish ... read more

La Alhambra - the "h" is silent. for Moroccan poets it was "a pearl set in emeralds” for the Emirs who built it this was“paradise on earth” Its elegant architecture rests in a setting both formidable and of rare natural beauty – on a plateau towering above the plain commanding an eagle’s eye view of the city of Granada, the Darro River and the heights of the Sierra Nevada (snowy mountain). Today it is hailed as the Taj Mahal of Spain, with filigree palacesinside a mighty fortress. A place of exquisite beauty beside raw power, the delicate heart within a beast. Its origin as an Islamic Palace started 800 years ago under Mohammed I, Emir (Sultan or governor) of the Nasrids of Morocco who ruled Spain. This was the Golden Age of Islam - precision through science, ... read more

So my last blog post, I mentioned a relationship I needed to end before I left to study abroad. This post is going to explain more what happened between him and I. I first met Tadashi while working at the Home Depot near my home in Columbus, Ohio. That would have been two summers ago and he actually asked me out, but I had to turn him down because I was focused on my finals at the time. I did end up dating someone else from the Home Depot not too much time after that.. so oops. That relationship is an entire another story I may get into one day but is not related to either of the current topics of discussion. So come last summer of 2018 and I am back at the HD. single. ... read more

Hello to everyone! I started this blog to share with the world but namely my friends and family my experience studying abroad in Granada, Spain. I should probably start at the very beginning of this whole process and journey of living in another country. In my freshman year of high school, I knew I wanted to be fluent in Spanish and the best way to do that was to be completely immersed in the language and culture. On a personal note, Americans are so spoiled that English is spoken around the entire world and we could go our entire lives without learning another language. One of my life goals is to learn at least 5 languages (Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Catálan) and travel the world to enrich my mind with other cultures. At the start ... read more

“… as I gently drove the ball past the close-in fieldsman to mid-on for an easy single it brought up the half century partnership …” Yes, day 50 and what a day it was. A walking tour of the old city took us to places we would not have dreamed of going. The guide was informative, communicated with sincerity and passion that showed his genuine love for his city. From small squares bustling with people and traders, through little markets in narrow lanes, old churches and buildings, musicians, eating establishments of all sorts, views, the appearing and disappearing river, the walk had something for everyone. Lunch for us was a renowned tapas restaurant, Las Manueles, where I let Jane order both the food and drinks. The result, apart from being ‘full’ … get to the hotel ... read more

Day 49 Granada, The Alhambra – I defy anyone not to enjoy The Alhambra. If you’re not into palaces’ then the gardens will grip you. Jane was ‘into’ both; I was more garden/park inclined and I wasn’t left disappointed but in awe. If you’re into both then you’ll be in heaven. Plus, if one wants to know more about this extraordinary site, just go research it … and then … visit it. I cannot do it credit with a few lines here. One could take a thousand photos and the great difficulty would then be in choosing which ones would be selected for a folder or an album. Every time we took a step higher or lower, walked around a wall, looked over an edge, looked up above, it was a photo shot due to the ... read more

The vistas today were far different from our previous few days. We had chosen to travel by coach so as to see the vast amount of countryside and small towns we would be passing by and through. We weren’t to be disappointed, even though we arrived at our accommodation pretty tired out. Not having much of an idea of the landform structure or use in Spain, all of today was a learning experience. The ruggedness and aridness of the journey did surprise us. We did not see or pass over any rivers, however, we did pass over many a river bed, both wide and narrow that had not seen water in a long time. One could tell that when it did rain, it rained in torrents, as the erosion of the ridges had formed many gullies ... read more
