http://www.heygo.com 2nd March - Bled Island What a beautiful day to take the boat across to Bled Island on our virtual tour today. We took the traditional traditional boat called pletna. Pletna boats are made by locals and are typical of Bled. Their origins date back to 1590. The colourful awning protects passengers from the sun and other weather conditions but today with clear blue skies & a cool March temperature it was so special to be able to take the short journey with just the boatman and Neza our guide. As we set off Neza sang a local folk song. To be an oarsman is quite an esteemed vocation that cannot be done by anyone. During the reign of Maria Theresa the ownership rights for pletna boats were given to farmers who received poorer land ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 15th February Bohinj - Slovenia Bohinj is located in the heart of the Julian Alps. The most extensive and highest mountain range in Slovenia & is also the most south-eastern part of the Alps. Lake Bohinj is the largest lake in Slovenia. Despite the thick snow our guide stepped up close to the statue giving tribute to 4 brave men who were the first to climb Mount Triglav. In 1778 4 brave men from Bohinj were the first to climb Triglav. These were a surgeon, a miner, a hunter & an army surgeon. The ascent took three days and on 26 August 1778, the four brave men reached its peak. Slovenes were then formally recognized as one of the Alpine nations. We continued to walk to a wooden jetty on the edge of the lake, ... read more

http://www.heygo.com 12th February - The architecture of Jože Plečnik This renowned pioneer of 20th century modern architecture has had a large-scale effect on Ljubljana, similar to that of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona. In Vienna, where he studied, Plečnik designed a number of pioneering works of modern architecture. Upon returning to Ljubljana in 1921, Plečnik accepted the post of professor at the newly established University of Ljubljana and focused all his creative energies to designing the city. We started our tour close to Butcher’s bridge looking at the Central Market - the building stretches between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, on the right side of the curve of the Ljubljanica River. The 1895 earthquake destroyed an old monastery. After the damaged building was removed, Vodnik Square provided a venue for an o... read more

http://www.heygo.com 9th February - Bled - Slovenia Another visit to Lake Bled, today we are walking along the lakeside pathway to St.Martin’s Parish church. Bled consists of 5 villages so there is no Central Square. As we walked along the pathway Neza, our guide told stories how she swims in the lake most days in the summer months, the rowing competitions that take place along the canoe corridor on the lake and details of the lake itself. The lake’s deepest point is 30 m and its average annual temperature is 12 °C, reaching up to 25 ° C in July. there are several species of predator fish swimming in the lake and amongst them, some really old, big, giant fish. We heard about Max, a Catfish of more than 8 feet in length but sadly it ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Upper Carniola » Ljubljana January 25th 2021

http://www.heygo.com 25th January Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia was the location for today’s virtual trip with Mateja (The female version of Matthew). David & I had visits Ljubljana a couple of years ago so I was looking forward to revisiting the area around the three bridges and the old town. We started at the Dragon Bridge a unique creation considered to be an extraordinary piece of technical heritage and example of Art Nouveau architecture, which flourished at the turn of the 20th century. Constructed between 1900 and 1901, it was Ljubljana's first reinforced concrete structure and one of the largest bridges of its kind to be built in Europe. At the time of its opening, it was supposed to be adorned with winged lions instead of dragons. The bridge's original decorations also include the parapet lamps, ... read more

Il ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Inner Carniola » Postojna October 12th 2019

Day 37 : Saturday 12 October It’s a small bus group and we head to Predjama Castle The Predjama Castle is amazing. One of the best. It’s built into the rock and you get a great feel for how they lived. It extends right back into the hill side and allowed them to escape up through the top of the mountain, plus they had fresh water running down into the castle. Fantastic. From there we took windy roads to the caves. The Postojna cave was huge. We have to take a train the first 2 kms just to get far enough into the cave. Its massive. It’s quite cool in the train. Long day, we all pig out on biscuits and chips as we’re all getting hungry. Headed out for a few drinks at a couple ... read more

Day 36 : Friday 11 October 2019 : Ljubljana The town is very pretty, wonderful atmosphere. We explored the ‘art district’ which I can say was very different, and almost scary… they ask you not to take photos with them in because the people don’t want to end up on social media as the police could then identify and find them. They were polite about it. We wandered around and back to the ‘nice’ part of town. Us girls did just a little bit of shopping in H&M, Kirsten bought a few things. Lunch and snacks around the markets, we are so having dinner at the markets tonight. Booked a tour for the cave and castle. €74 pp. Seemed expensive, but with door to door transfers and all the entry prices, it works out at a ... read more
