14th october Mum and Dad had organised a day where we could hire good bikes and helmets so we could go mountain biking. The only bad thing was all the down hill had age limits of 14years so me and mason couldn't go on hem (Mum said it was a good thing). At 10 o'clock we got the cable car up to the top of the hill where the trails were. Dad walked up because he wanted to save money, he said he wanted the challange and Mum said he wanted a break from us. Up the top we got our bikes, well i did anyway, Masons came up on the cable car because he was to small for the ones on the top. My bikewas a GT avalanche, massive suspension and good brakes. mason and ... read more

DAY 9 - LJUBLJANA For some reason my body doesnt want to sleep past about 630am at the moment. Got up at 7am and tried to creep round the hostel room to shower which isnt easy, and was out by about 8am. Another one of the guys from the hostel was up so we went for a bit of a walking tour. Had the weirdest hot chocolate ever too!! It was almost like pure chocolate, only drinkable. Odd. Anyway started a walking tour at the town hall, through the cathedral and then finally up the castle. Got the funicular up (lift type thing) and then had a wander round. Great view over the city and it was a relatively nice day. Little disappointed though as the castle wasnt that exciting and I couldnt go up the ... read more

The photo shows many structures competing in the center of the capital, three bridges converge, and three architectural styles are seen; Art Deco in the distance, Italian Rococo on the left and French Empire. A delightful, compact city square. Just a little more of Ljubljana's fascinating history. The ancient Romans established a military camp named Emona that by the 6th century AD had developed in the town Julia Aemona. The site of present day Ljubljana has been occupied continuously for well over 2000 years. Ljubljana is not only the political capital of Slovenia it is the cultural, economic and and educational capital as well. Nothing of importance occurs in Slovenia occurs without a connection to Ljubljana. An important but short-lived moment for Ljubljana was its selection by Napoleon for the capital of his new province of ... read more

The weather today is cloudy and cool. We decided to travel to locations close-by. First we went to Lake Bohinj - a recreational area about 45 minutes from the pension. The lake is both a summer and winter resort with skiing in the winter and sailing, para-sailing, and hiking i the summer. At the ewst end of the lake is a cable car which takes people to the summit of Mt. Vogel - an 8 minute ride. Unfortunately the top was in clouds so we settled for a coffee at the top before heading back down. Next stop was the Vintgar Gorge which offered a very nice walk through the gorge. On the way back we stopped in a local supermarket and it was much like a Save-On store - even with similar brands. Their bread ... read more

The day began with another road race on the local autoroutes. They are toll roads (you have to buy a sticker every 6 months). There is something to be said for this system because the roads are very good and the tunnels are very costly to construct. The driving time is reduced compared to the local roads which are narrow and lots of curves. Lake Bled was a treat. The weather was wonderful and we walked around the lake (about 90 minutes). We also rented a boat and rowed out to the island where the church is located. This is a very picturesque location and there were not as many tour buses which was nice. Our pension is located in Radovljica about 5K from Bled since Bled caters to tourists with bottomless pockets ($200 plus/night). We ... read more

Today was a much more restful day. Our travel time was much shorter. We stopped at a National Park (Skocjanske jame) whih is a UNESCO site. It is home to the largest underground cave in Europe. We walked through the interior of eleven caves (both dry and with a flowing river). The stalagmites & stalagtites were really amazing. Unfortunately interior photos were not allowed. At the lowest point we were 170 meters underground. At the end of the trip we took a vehicular trip back to the top. The car stalled abruptly on the way up causing a minor amount of panic on the part of the passengers. Fortunately nobody was seriously injured. We then went to Lipica to view the stables of the Libizzan horses. They have been breeding the horses here since 1580 and ... read more

Travelled through Slovenia on our way to see Hayley in Vienna where we are now. We only had time to stay in Bled and Ljubljana. Bled is very beautiful and we had a wonderful stay in Pension Berc. We managed to hike and bike which I enjoyed. Definitely a place to revisit. Ljubljana reminded us of Prague, a smaller version of course. It was a shame that the weather has turned much cooler as I am sure the outdoor cafes would have been buzzing a few weeks earlier. We did manage to enjoy the company of a couple of swans. ... read more
