Lake Bohinj
Beautiful lagoon On arrival by bus I was lost. I went into a travel shop/internet cafe where the nicest bloke gave me some water (I like my free water), use of his internet and rang my hostel owner who came and picked me up! My faith in humankind after encountering some uber rude Italians was restored. At first I was a little freaked out at how far away the hostel seemed from everything - but I couldn't complain as I had a great view of the mountains (but then again this is Slovenia you would be pretty hard pushed not to have a great view of some mountains of some description) and I could see Bled castle. I spent a few hours online before retiring to bed after a long day.
The following day I did what everybody comes to Bled for - I went to the lake! Started off at the castle which was quite a hike and worked up quite an appetite. Unfortunatly I misunderstood the Slovenian hostel owner who recommended that I eat at the 'castle restaurant'. So I went with his recommendation and ordered the cheapest thing I could find (14 euro). What came was the most pretentious
tiniest bit of food I have ever seen. Not impressed. There was 14 euro I would never see again, and I was still hungry after I had eaten it. Needless to say I requested quite a few glasses of free water with my meal. And I ate every last bit of complementary bread they gave me. But at least the view from the terrace of the Church of Assumption island was stunning.
I them commenced my walk around the lake. It was another beautiful, hot day, so a swim in the lake felt obligatory. It was colder than I thought it would be, after being told it was warm water. Still lovely though. I then sunbathed and continued my walk. Towards the end I stopped for a bowl of chips at a much more reasonably priced pub/restaurant. As it turns out, the hostel owner meant the restaurant underneath the castle by the way. Doh. Makes sense as he did tell me not to bother paying to enter the castle - which you have to do if you're going to eat at the overpriced restaurant. But what to do when you're as hungry as I was :/? I think the
brilliant restaurant at Ljubljana castle gave me a false sense of security. Oh well!
My feet did some serious mileage today - and I would be doing some serious mileage tomorrow too! The following day I walked the 3km to Vintgar Gorge which is a stream carved by the River Radovna, with lovely picturesque rapids, pools and waterfalls. On the way there I saw some beautiful traditional Slovenian houses. I wanna live in one! So nice!
When I got back to Bled I made the split decision to get the bus to Lake Bohinj - a decision I am very pleased to have made. It puts Lake Bled to shame to be honest. Well that's exaggurating a little but it is bigger, more beautiful, less developed, and I think I was the only tourist around for miles. Obviously I saw tourists now and again but I mainly had the surrounding pathway to myself. The photos speak for themselves I feel! I was in unfettered hysterics (due to there being noone around to see me) when I randomly came across 3 cows just having a stroll in the opposite direction. To this day I have no clue where they
came from. There was no farmer with them, no fields around - just the lake, the path and the surrounding woodland! I still laugh now when I think about it! Lol
