We had been alerted to the fact that this was Easter weekend in Romania - a week after the rest of the world celebrates it (Crazy Romanians) and that all the hostels in Brasov were fully booked. We arrived at Brasov station hoping to meet a room tout who could give us a roof over our heads and luckily were met off the train by a retired mechanic named Radu. We managed to haggle a few Lei off his price and he took us to his apartment. On arrival we were just happy to have somewhere to sleep at night, but on further inspection, it turned out that Radu's standards of cleanliness were in fact terribly poor and the place was filthy. Nonetheless, it was warm and the beds comfortable. We settled in and then took ... read more

Anybody who spends anytime travelling through Eastern Europe will come across the phenominum of the "New Prague". Every halfway decent city from Latvia to Bulgaria has been labeled the New Prague by some wag or another. Usually, the comparison has as much validity as comparing Hussein or Quadaffi to Hitler. Budapest may have been the first to wear the label, and although it isn't an apt description, it rivals Prague as our favorite city on this trip. More reminiscent of the Bay Area, it combines the modern and the ancient in a seemless way. Whereas Prague features scenery and a layout that doesn't seperate an "Old Town" from the rest of the city, Budapest integrates its relics into a quaint modern setting reminiscent of the Bay Area. Sitting on the Danube, it is the combination of ... read more

We pulled into Sighisoara under a grey, foggy sky and you guessed it, in the rain. We were approached on the platform by Andrej, a Romanian hostel worker, who took us to Nathan's hostel which was only a short walk from the station. Apart from us, there were only 3 other people staying at the hostel so it was pretty quiet. We went to a bank and took some money out. The Romanian Lei is going through a transistion period to try and avoid inflation and as a result, they are using what is basically two currencies. Not only is this confusing but the fact that in the old currency, 1GBP is 50,000 Lei means that we are stuggling to work out exactly what we are spending. The numbers are just too bloody long!! Still, it ... read more

The journey into Romania kind of set the tone for the entire stay in this fabulous little backwater of Europe. That is to say its was an absolute nightmare. Ill spare the full story as i dont want to relive it anymore than absolutely necessary, but the highlights included torrential rainfall (as always) getting robbed of cigarettes by Romanian pikeys, hanging around in train stations for hours on end and meeting a french speaking Romanian tramp who complained that the coffee we bought him wasnt a cappucino! I blame Starbucks for that last incident! 24hrs after we left Egger we arrive in Sigisoara in Transylvania and check into Nathan's Villa. Apparently Nathan's used to be called Elivis Villa, but the Elvis character got mixed up in steroid dealing and had to leave the country for South ... read more

Well, in our trip we have the plans of going in many places that have death risks of epidemic diseases and wars. So, to be safe of all that we decided to take professional advise. Consult someone that has "lived" very very long (hehehe... many hundred years). We new we had a risk contacting this professional... hehehe... many people who did it never came back home... huahuahua. But opposite as you can image our appointment was very pleasant and safe. With just a little entrance annoyance. ... Our journey into Romania started with a night train from Budapest to Brasov. Leaving the station at 6:00 in the evening, crossing (or not) the border at midnight and arriving at... well, I don't know... I guess the train arrived on time in Brasov the next day... but it's ... read more

As our hotel did not offer breakfast, we struck off in search of coffee and food early the next morning. We were up quite early, and most places were deserted - we did not see a lot that seemed very promising, as most places seemed to serve coffee but not food. We finally found a cafe where we innocently ordered cappucinos - when they arrived, they turned out to be heavily laced with whipped cream. We finally succeeded in getting some "normal" coffees, and Adriana spied a bakery across the street, from which we were able to get enough to keep us going for a while. This was followed by a lovely walk in the Maritime Park and on the beach. We were amused to see an evidently insane gentleman playing his guitar and singing at ... read more

On February 23, my departure date from Kenya , I got to visit one more orphanage in Nairobi . I was thrilled to see Little Kanini (the 3 yr. old that had been left in the Remand Home- the juvenile detention center in Nakuru). She now sleeps in a room with other children her age instead of a room full of children convicted of various crimes. The staff said she often bangs her head, bites herself and has a lot of emotional problems. The child needs help just like so many of the other babies that lay in their beds with various problems. More than anything I pray for more volunteers to go work with the kids. There were 96 kids there, no schooling, no therapy and few staff members. The director was very kind and ... read more

Soveja extra sezon in Moldova.
