Midnight Arrival Capers A cheap flight from Budapest saw us fly into Bucharest, Romania, at midnight. We had for once pre-booked a hostel and had noticed that they offered an airport pickup service for E6. Being the adventurous types we decided to make our own way to the hostel; that's when the fun began! After collecting our bags we ran the gauntlet of the taxi drivers and made our way to the buses. We had been told that you have to purchase your ticket from a booth before you get on the bus but try as as we might we couldn't find a booth that was open. Too late we saw the last bus of the day disappear into the night! We didn't feel like going back to the taxi drivers and admitting defeat so we ... read more

May your days be merry and bright and may all your Christmases be white! That's what I wish u all friends, family and readers of this blog. Unfortunately this Christmas wasn’t a white one here in Bucharest.. only for those lucky enough who traveled up in the mountain cities and villages.. Oh how I wish I had vacantion and I would have spend it in a remote village up in Maramures, where people still wear traditional clothes, gather together to sing old Christmas carols, cook divine traditional food and travel on sledge pulled by horses. Well so far it wasn’t so bad here in the city.. all my foregners friends told me that we, Romanians, spend to much time in the kitchen preparing too many types of food…and I agree.. don’t know how many nations spend ... read more

Got up a bit before 6am to get to the station for the 6:40am train. Said good bye to Julia and timed a bus to the station pretty well. The board wasn’t yet saying what platform my train was going to be on, just that it was late. But of course the dickhead taxi drivers were everywhere and hassling the shit out of me. After walking up and down a few times I went and grabbed some Maccas for brekkie. By the time I finished the train was up on the board and I checked out the platform. There was a train there but no one getting on or off so I wasn’t sure what was happening. There was supposed to be a 30 minutes stop here, so I walked up and down a few times ... read more

Had a bit of sleep-in in the morning and when I got up I was hearing from the Istanbul kids all about the night out they had. Damn I was regretting not being able to. They had seen some extremely hot girls getting up on the bar and stripping off, dancing. “Ireland” (we all ended up using the country of someone’s origin instead of their name) said she was in no way bisexual but she would’ve jumped at the chance to try it with these girls. And I spent the night watching some paedophile perving on young girls. Damn damn damn. They were only now trying to organise a car out to Poenari which was a bit late. Turns out the hostel has someone who will drive people around, and taking them out to Poenari only ... read more

I was up a bit before 7 in the morning to go driving out to the ruins of the real life Dracula’s castle. Now I had made a big mistake in hiring this car that I hadn’t worked out yet. 1. they drive on the other side of the road, which means the rest of the car is to your right not to your left 2. the car was a manual and I drive an auto, so I was changing gears with the wrong hand 3. the map that the hostel had provided me was not so good for driving - you could only read the main roads in the middle of the city, anything else was too small or not on the map - and I was going 200km out into the countryside 4. I ... read more

Felt a little seedy the next morning and didn’t get going until about 11am. Retraced my way back to the train station and got myself a ticket to Bucuresti (Bucharest is the English version), which is a two hour train ride south on the Wallachian plain. 42 lei for a first class seat, or 38 for second class... seemed like a no brainer and I thought better to pay a little bit more and be looked after a bit better away from the gypsies, but turns out when I got on the train it was one big carriage. First class was just divided from the others by a glass partition. But it was “express” in that there was only one stop on the way, at which a fairly attractive lady sat opposite and chatted the rest ... read more

Its officially here….winter has arrived in Bucharest ....and with it the first snooooow.Who cares about bad traffic, working hours and all that? Prisoner in my office, I find my self staring on the window looking how all changes when it snows…..looks brighter, cheerful…fun....makes u feel u r reborn...for me is a great spiritual journey.. In the meantime: * reports r waiting to finished, * the desk is a mess.. * and I decided I cant miss this moment. * What can I say? I enjoy winter... and snow. Every year I hardly wait for that big one when roads r closed, 50 cm snow, perfect time to go with the sledge and after built a snow man... (I beleive in every adult's body a child's soul is traped in).... everything stops like it forces u to ... read more

(written two days ago) As I write this, we are on a train to Krakow, Poland. We are leaving Romania after six chilled-out days here. We have had some welcome time to relax and enjoy the autumn colours after travelling so frequently, and far, across the former Soviet lands. I’ve caught up with old friends, Indie has made some new ones, and together we’ve revelled in the cool atmosphere of Bucharest, one of my favourite cities. But that’s the short version. Here’s what really happened… The path back to Europe - 45 hours with the Fat Controller Our ‘Express’ train journey from Moscow to Bucharest was smooth and trouble-free. In spite of stopping in Kiev train station for five hours, unable to leave the platform, we enjoyed the journey. It gave us the chance to ... read more

In the 1960s, under the leadership of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and his successor, Nicolae Ceausescu, the Communist Party of Romania began to implement a foreign policy independent of Soviet goals. Socialist state ownership and central planning fostered the rapid growth of heavy industry and forcibly turned Romania from an agrarian into an urban sociey. During the 1970s, Ceausescu attempted to modernise the Romanian economy further, by investing huge amounts of money borrowed from Western credit institutions. Due to his grandiose development projects, the Romanian people were submitted to a rigorous austerity programme in the 1980s since Ceausescu wanted to pay off the country's accumulated foreign debt within a short period. The standards of living plunged considerably as Romania exported much of its food and fuel production. The populace was controlled by the secret police (Securitate) an... read more

The Food The food in Ro is very good and an Akins Dieter’s dream. There is meat at every meal and quite often there is meat-stuffed meat available! It is common to have an assortment of cold cuts in the breakfast buffet each morning. Also found at every meal are red ripe tomatoes, cucumber and potatoes. Lettuce is rare, but cabbage and slaw are plentiful. At the Hotel Cocor at dinner each night, we were entertained by a live band. They had an amazing way of transitioning from Elvis to the Carpenters to Captain & Tenille very smoothly. One evening, the group of students stayed in the hotel café to dance. The band let the students karaoke. It was quite an experience to hear my Romanian teammate singing a beautiful rendition of “Strangers in the Night.” ... read more
