Only 728 days to go Really enjoyed Budapest and discovered literal meaning of Pest is oven or kiln (courtesy of the Budapest Museum). Lots of open spaces, an incongruous mix of restored grand historical buildings, soviet block like architecture and ugly new International hotels ( the good, the bad and the ugly! . The city is coming to terms with its recent history, when I first saw this holocaust memorial I thought some one had left or was selling old shoes by the riverside. Budapest is full of thermal Spas, but having found a "hot tub" but sadly no time to figure out the instructions as we had to hot foot it to the overnight train (just a 14 hour journey) to say hello to Gordy and George in Bucharest. ... read more

Maybe coming to Bucharest during the NATO summit wasn't such a good idea. First of all, during my less-than-amazing night train ride from Budapest to Sighişoara, at some point in the night, when everybody in my compartment was asleep, the border police knocked at the door, flung it open, and wanted to see the IDs of everybody. Fair enough, we were crossing the border, but after 10 or so minutes some more control guards came and wanted to check my bag. I had to empty maybe half of it, the guy asked if I had a gun in it, I answered truthfully "No...", then he saw my small medication bag, I said it contained Aspirine, Paracetamol and stuff, he asked "Heroin", me again "No.......". That wasn't the end of the check. He got confused by my ... read more

To the fallen of Romania" To you who fly on forever i send that part of me which is bound to you for all the time i send to you those of our hopes and dreams that never quite came true the joyous laughter and tears of our boyhood the mysteries of our adolescence the glorious strength and tragic illusions of our ... read more

I got back safely from Romania. Had a great time. 10 of us flew into Bucharest sunday. We took the wrong bus and finished out in the slums where there were stray dogs and broken down houses. Luckily Romanian people are generally nice and speak English so a guy told us how to get back to the city. Once we got in the city it took us about 3 hours to find our hostel because we had ten people giving 10 different directions. A guy we met walked us all the way to our hostel and we offered him some beer but he declined. Once we found the hostel we had an entire room to ourselves which was good. Also had our own balcony. We went touring around the city and found a heap of monuments ... read more

Our Halfhearted attempt to get to Snagov was thwarted by our lack of enthusiasm. We did however manage to raise enough enthusiasm to make scrambled eggs on toast again. We navigated our way through the overcrowded metro system to the stop nearest the museum we had chosen to visit. After we climbed up out of the underground we realised that we had no idea which way was up and floundered around for a while. When we did find the right direction we walked past one hell of a building but we still have no idea what it was. It was heavily guarded by military people and had national flags but that is all we know. The picture will go up on travelblog so you never know, someone may know what it is. The museum we opted ... read more

Midland Youth Hostel may not have the cleanest rooms or the best showers but it does provide eggs for breakfast. We made a veritable feast out of scrambled eggs on toast and breads and spreads. We said goodbye to Charlie who was heading back to the states. Today was our designated sightseeing day. We had a list of the obligatory tourist sights and set out with the aim to see as many as possible. First stop was the university square where you can supposedly see bullet holes from where ceausescu's police fired on protesters. We did only look half heartedly, but we couldn't see anything. After being in Transylvania we both have a healthy interest in Vlad Tepes and so his palace in the historic quarter of Bucharest was our second stop. Historic quarter is just ... read more
