Very Busy Bucharest...I am at the half way point of my trip in terms of the length of my stay here in Europe. I am amazed I am only half way along. I feel like Boulder was from a different life, a different planet. I arrived in Bucharest yesterday evening and was very relieved to have Alexandru meet me at the airport. It was all a bit overwhelming. We picked up his girlfriend Ioana and they drove me around the city a little so I could get my bearings. Unfortunately today I don't have any of those bearings left. I had to find this internet cafe to get online and find a decent map. I think I know where I am now. It's not that Bucharest is really that much different than many other places, it's ... read more

Greetings everyone......... Day 3 of "searching for Dracula". Getting here was quite a journey. Thanks to tardy Tri-Rail, I arrived at the Delta check in counter at MIA 2 minutes after theflight was "closed". Mind you, there was still 20 minutes til the flight left, but it was "closed". Luckily, there was another flight to ATL within 1 and a halfhours, so they put me on that one and I still was able to make my connection to Paris. Would you believe that the Paris flight ran 1 hour late, thus putting my connection to Bucharest in jeapardy. If you have never changed terminals at CDG, you've missed something! It involved walking, 2 buses, lack of signage and a security checkpoint. I found the gate at 10 am which was departure time.....and they had just started ... read more

Ed: Now, if you arrive at an airport and a taxi driver meets you at the gates, and tells you he can take you to town, and grabs yours bags and starts walking away, without giving you an opportunity to say a word, surely alarm bells start ringing. But oh no, not to Matthew. He happily followed this strange man and obediently stepped into his 70’s Dacia (Communist era car brand) with no door handles and rather dodgy-looking meter. Despite my objections, I too get into the car and we are taken into town at the cost of nearly ten times the normal rate. This was our welcome to Romania, one of the last pillars of the Soviet Union who only as recently as 1989 revolted against a megalomaniac dictator (Ceausescu) and is now desperately hoping ... read more

We arrived into Bucharest and took a metro to the Elvis Villa Hostel where we had planned to stay. We ate a typical Romanian Meal of pork leg and beans, bought some beers and settled down to watch Arsenal v Villareal. We had a relatively lazy morning before leaving the hostel to see Bucharest's major tourist attraction, the Parliamentary Palace. After first finding the wrong palace and then stumbling accross teh royal palace it was a major anti-climax. Billed as the second largest building in Europe, it was big. And thats all I have to say about that. We returned to the hostel before heading to the local 'strip' which had a couple of bars, none of which were particularly good although we met an English girl from Manchester called Farah who is heading in a ... read more

Anybody who spends anytime travelling through Eastern Europe will come across the phenominum of the "New Prague". Every halfway decent city from Latvia to Bulgaria has been labeled the New Prague by some wag or another. Usually, the comparison has as much validity as comparing Hussein or Quadaffi to Hitler. Budapest may have been the first to wear the label, and although it isn't an apt description, it rivals Prague as our favorite city on this trip. More reminiscent of the Bay Area, it combines the modern and the ancient in a seemless way. Whereas Prague features scenery and a layout that doesn't seperate an "Old Town" from the rest of the city, Budapest integrates its relics into a quaint modern setting reminiscent of the Bay Area. Sitting on the Danube, it is the combination of ... read more
