Sunny and warm! Do I miss the snow? The sight of it, yes. The cold, no. Today I wandered around in the Bario Alto, the high part of the old city. Up in the old town, I went to a church and tagged along with a group of school kids and listened to the teacher explain the architecture. I understood quite a bit. It was evidentally one of the few places that the 1755 earthquake didn´t totally destroy. That earthquake was the downfall of Portugal as the major city of the time. However, I have to say it is really beautiful now. The second part of the day I spent out at the site of the 1998 World Exposition - can´t spell in English anymore. The most fantastic part was the Oceanario -- huge aquarium. Here´s ... read more

Three things I don't recall in NYC, a Starbucks on every corner, tons of thrift shops (upscale ones)--at least in the Gramarcy Park area where I am now, and snow in March. The snow happened over the weekend and is pretty much gone from the streets - about 50 degrees today and everyone in hats, coats, scarves, and gloves. One thing just the same-sirens. I guess I'm the real change. It now seems crowded and crazy when it didn't used to. Anyway, I'm on my way to Newark Airport from La Guardia to fly overnight to Portugal. I think I'm tired, but I'm still standing. I didn't get much sleep last night--very crowded airplanes. I'll sleep tonight on the plane. Next entry--Lisboa, Portugal!... read more

I always did like surprises - and this year Brendon has really done himself proud - with over a week full of surprises - all for me! But before I start.... For those of you keen to know about Norway, I promise you that a blog is coming. Yes there are tonnes of stories, crashed cars, snowstorms, houses burnt down and a shed load of money gone up in smoke - and despite all of that we still had a good time, but I don’t want to share them with you until we can show you some photos too. Photos? Um, well. Yes. We forgot our camera. And while Lars & Rachael kindly lent us one, in all the drama surrounding our leaving there was no way to copy the photos over onto CD. So ... read more

Last weekend we got together with our American classmates for another road trip. This time we went to the Algarve region in southern Portugal, and also made a stop-off along the way in the town of Évora. We left Coimbra on Friday morning and arrived in Évora around lunch time. We had lunch near the main square in town and then made our way to one of the more famous (or infamous) sights in town, the Capela dos Ossos, or Bone Chapel. Lindsay and I had heard about this chapel a year ago from one of Lindsay’s classmates in Monterey (thanks Paco Loco!). The bone chapel is a small room attached to the Sao Francisco church and the walls are made of the bones and skulls of over 5,000 people. All things considered, the story behind ... read more

Lucky for us, an extraordinary exhibition of Cartier (1899 - 1949) - The Journey of a Style was being temporarily exhibited at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. The gorgeous jewelry, clocks and other pieces of craftsmanship were tremendous. We finally know the secret of how the Cartier Mystery Clocks work...all very hush-hush you know! The wide selection of paintings, antiquities and artifacts collected by Calouste Gulbenkian over his lifetime was impressive. We spent a sunny, but very windy afternoon at Parque das Nacoes (Expo site) , along with every other citizen of Lisbon. We visited the Oceanario of Lisbon after navigating the Lisbon metro system and the Vasco da Gama Mall. The diverse sea life at the Oceanario was amazing. There are over 400 species of animals and plants! The exhibits were extraodinarily life-like with ... read more

Today was spent day tripping out of Lisbon to the historic town of Sintra where the Portugese Royals spent their summers and the sea-side resort of Cascais with its expansive beaches and lovely quaint village ambiance. After 8 hours of walking up and down hills, we are starting to realize how hilly Portugal is. Will we be able to keep up the pace? Hopefully, Spain and Morocco are flatter! Pena Palace was an amazing castle and the surrounding park was spectacular with tropical, mediterranean and desert foliage- the ramparts could be quite frightening at times, where we were often afraid of falling over the edge of the turrets and tumbling down the side of the mountain. Beautiful tiles and detailed carvings covered the walls and ceilings of the palace. Dipping our toes in the Atlantic Ocean ... read more

Three days ‘til I leave! Yikes! Pretty much everything’s ready to go. The cold weather and wind here in Alaska reminds me why I scheduled Portugal in March—to actually experience spring which I haven’t really seen since I left Sedro Woolley in the summer of ’98. As all my Alaskan readers know, spring doesn’t much happen here. We get “break-up” when the snow thaws, and the frozen ground morphs into mud and turns unpaved roads and driveways into deep brown sink holes. Anyway, I’m counting on Portugal to remind me what spring feels like. This doesn’t necessarily mean I’ll miss “break-up,” which can happen anytime from the end of March ‘til the end of April. We had lots of snow, so it should be a doozer this year. For sure, I’ll be back in time to ... read more

After an enjoyable flight with Lufthansa in Business Class, we arrived in Lisbon and headed out for a stroll in the Baixa District of Lisbon. Navigating the twisted streets in the dark and climbing the steep hilltop in the Barrio Alto, we discovered a quaint restaurant by the name of Bizzaro. We enjoyed our first Portugese dinner and headed back down to our hotel where we fell asleep as soon as our heads hit our pillows. Our first day in Lisbon included a tour of the historic Alfama District where we visited the Castelo de Sao Jorge and the Se de Lisbon (Cathedral ) and then we hopped on a tram to Belem and visited the spectacular Mosteiro dos Jeronimos and Torre de Belem and the monument in honour of the Portugese´s Age of Discovery, Padrao ... read more

Ok, ready for part 2? I'll try to make it short for your sake and mine. To start with I'll give you a quick overview of Lisbon. Sun, sun, sun! A few more modern buildings than Porto and more variation of neighbourhoods. Replacing the 8 foot wide buses on 9 foot wide streets of Porto was the 28 tram which was slightly less scary and a little more scenic. Top 3 foods: Churrasco chicken in Porto (and Lisbon), caldo verde soup in Porto, carmelized pecans in Lisbon. Top 3 attractions: Parque das Nacoes (site of Expo '98), Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in Belem (a 16th C. French and Spanish built monastery), and a traditional Fado club in Lisbon. Other notable things we saw in Lisbon: 1: Castelo de Sao Jorge, the castle in the middle of the ... read more

Well, I surprised Camille with a trip to Faro, Portugal, with the intentions of sitting on a different beach for a couple days. I normally sit on the beach in Alicante, so a change of pace and the opportunity to reunite with my ocean of the last 22 years, the Atlantic was irresistible. She was a bit cold, but I didn’t mind. I just hope she doesn’t find out that I’ve been cheating on her with the Mediterranean for the last three months. Anyway we to Madrid the night before on the 14th of March, almost a four hour train ride, but it wasn’t too bad. We arrived in Madrid just before midnight and had to find a place to stay along with carry around Camille’s suitcase (I had a backpack). After a couple failed ... read more
