Last weekend we took another day trip to Porto. It has been one of our favorite places to visit in Portugal, and we knew we were going to have a pretty busy schedule starting next week, so we decided to take advantage of having a quiet weekend and also of the good weather. We started our day by visiting the Casa de Musica, a concert hall built by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas in 2005. The building is very cool and modern-looking and to go in you climb some stairs that look like the entrance to a flying saucer or something. The inside was very cool, full of interesting art as well as slightly dangerous random stairs that came out of nowhere and sloping ceilings to hit your head on. Luckily we didn't suffer any major ... read more

Went shopping in Lisbon. Got some pants that fit Zac. Doesnºt happen often . Actually, neither does being in Lisbon. And Sof got some cool clothes. That does happen often. Well, the getting clothes part. I did write something cool here but Sof deleted it. Dammit. Dammit all the way to cool clothes heaven. Right, our holiday. Yes, clothes are cool in Lisbon. We had heaps of fun shopping and easily made a day of it. And the tile museum. THE TILE MUSEUM!!! WOW!!! HIghtlight of the trip for Sof.... so many tiles..... Zacºs highlight of the trip came a few hours later when we discovered the famous Belem custard tarts. He hasnt been the same since. (who would have thought of putting cinnamon AND icing sugar on a custard tart simultaneously ?!?!?!?!) Thursday we ... read more

The school had a little ceremony for Juliana, who is from Columbia and has been studying here for a month, and me. Mostly fr her since she's been here longer is part of a group class, whereas, I was only here a week and had a private class and didn't reattly become part of the school the way she did. Very good atmosphere at the school, especially for young folks. It served me well, but I was only wanting to learn the language. Anyway, it was a very nice little party with Port and pastries. It's raining lightly here today, so it makes leaving a little easier. If I can, I'll make an entry tomorrow, but I may not since I don't know what kind of internet services they have in Guimaraes where I'm going. It ... read more

One more day in Porto Europe » Portugal » porto By AK JuliaMarch 29th 2007Julia Normand Back to my regular teacher today--Sara, who is a grand lady, born in France to Portuguese parents who left Portugal during the Salazar period. she grew up learning both Portuguese and Frence. First her sister came back to Portugal, then she did, then her parents. She's very patient with me and very helpful, partly because she knows English and can tell in English if I really don't understand. However, she almost always manages, one waqy or another to get me to understand in Portuguese. Today, the school had an activity for the students. Check out the pictures, and you'll see I a... read more

I had a different teacher today from Monday and Tuesday, a young woman, studying to be a teacher and is now doing her student teaching with two other students. Since she’s from Porto, she was able to answer most of my questions about life here. Her passion is for literature, writing, poetry, etc. he even quoted from memory lines from Portugal’s most famous poet, Luis Camoes—I probably spelled that wrong, but I’ll for sure do some research on him when I get home. Great lesson! I told you yesterday that I would go to the planetarium today, but I found out it is not open on weekdays, so I went to the trolley car museum instead. What luck! There were two actresses, who put on a show for a group of six year-olds. I’ think I ... read more

You’ll think all I do is look down. Well, there’s some truth in that since I do a lot of walking—streets, sidewalks, alleyways, and stairs. Lots of stairs! I walked up from the river on Sunday via a curving alleyway of stairs. The curves prevented me from seeing how far I had yet to go. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t have started, but once I got half way up, the choice to go down looked worse than continuing up, especially since I eventually needed to go up. The other way up would have been longer but not so steep. One more comment on the women in high heels and pointy shoes—they are the mothers of Portugal’s great soccer players, whose athletic agility, I’m convinced comes from their mothers, not their fathers, who wear very sensible shoes. On ... read more

No, that’s not Portuguese. That’s an Italian rhetorical question—literally, “Who made me do this?” The obvious answer is that whatever situation you're in is of your own making. You did it to yourself, dummy. I always say this like a mantra when I first go to a foreign country because it's so much work to figure out the simplest things, like flushing the toilet. Sometimes it is a flat panel on the wall, sometimes a flat panel on the lid of the tank, and sometimes it is a knob to turn, rarely a handle to push down. However, I always have something happen that makes me glad I got myself into this. I hear a cell phone meow on the bus. (lots of original ring tones here). A short stocky woman about my age, slowly unzips ... read more

I´m the one with a blister on my toe (not serious), when there are women walking the city with shoes pointier than any I ever saw in the previous hay day of pointy shoes. I want to take a toe nail clippers to them and just snip off the very tip. I took a boat ride on the river Douro today, then visited a Croft wine cellars. They are famous for their Port, which I discovered comes in red, tawny (the most special), and white. I tasted red and white--both sweet and powerful. Tomorrow I start school. I´ll add more then. So far, I haven´t figured out how to upload photos. I´ll post this and then play so I don´t have type it a third time. Each time it gets shorter. ... read more

Amazing! Lots of coffee shops, but narry a single Starbucks anywhere! Cell phones are ubitiquous--lots of thumbs flashing, doing texting rather than long conversations in public places. I took the train to Porto today and now have the rest of today and all of tomorrow before I start school on Monday. The class is only for two hours, so I should get to know Porto pretty well. My host family is a wonderful woman, Consuela--grandparents were Spanish so she got a Spanish name. Very jolly lady, very helpful in spite of the fact she speaks no English--her hands work very hard to make up for what she knows isn´t understood by me. AND, thank God, only one short flight of stairs instead of 4 incredibly long ones. I met her brother. Not sure if he lives ... read more

Singapore Airport: We did all the important things in Singapore: the $3 Laksa, the botanic gardens, bought a beard trimmer, had a photo outside Raffles, went to Harry's jazz club and got bloody hot. The orchid garden in the botanic gardens had Sof in awe. Many photos taken!!!! There was a "cool" house for the bromeliads, which is equivalent to the "hot" house in Australia. Hehehe. Singapore airport is monotonously exciting. Hmmm... quite a lot to do for an airport. This is where the free internet comes in handy. We are also having an exciting time trying to get rid of S$4.25 and A$2. We have already spent S$0.50 on a stamp. WOW! Zurich: Well, we managed to spend our money by changing the aussie $2 to singapore money and buying a tea to share ... read more
