Wow what a trip! Richard and I are now positive that we would win the Amazing Race hands down. We can climb stairs, navigate bus routes, and survive rain storms like troopers. I started my trip with a flight to and an evening in Dublin at Casa Smith where we repacked our belongings into two packs and prepared for the early morning flight. A quick flight the next day and we were in beautiful Porto, Portugal! We found the info booth to inquire about campgrounds but the lady was very unhelpful so we hopped the metro downtown to find the real info centre. Our first mission was to get to the campground and set up our tent so we could spend the evening wandering the city. We quickly discovered that the nearest campground was an hour ... read more

That was one of the questions I got on the first entry. When I started this blog, I just logged on and followed directions. The site said “Write something about yourself.” Without thinking, I went into “resume” mode, pitching myself for a teaching job, and the “life-long learner” had always served me well in the world of education. Well, a couple people started ribbing me about it. “Does that sound like bragging?” I asked. “Yes,” they answered. So this “life long learner” learned a lesson: don’t try to snow your readers—they’re your friends and they know you pretty well. So, to those of you who called me on it, thanks. To the rest of you, keep checking in, I only have 15 days 'til departure. ... read more

I have just arrived at Porto's airport. Little depressive feeling. Bring so many things inside me and feel so sad and empty at the same time. Feels as when you walk forward, thinking you have droped something somewhere and you keep looking behind afraid you missed something on the way. I don't know what it is...just loss. ( Xutos&Pontapes - homem do leme - "... a vida é sempre a perder..." ) Life was shown to me in the most beautiful way. I had never seen it so true and colorful. Never had so many great people sharing it with me ( and this is what i am most thankful for...)....................................................................................................................... ................................................................................................................................................ i could die right now..... read more

"It takes two to dance tango" popular expression, means you can't just do it on your own you can't have real fun on your own you can't realize things on your own you can't be helped on your own you can't make friends on your own you can't love on your own you can't live on your own... you can't grow beautiful things on your own. you can grow potatoes on your own... =/ though would be easier if you ask someone to help you dig the ground so here are some people who helped me grow my potatoes in this journey: VISION was one of my most incredible experiences Riku Seppala (thanks for beeing such a great host. Lots o'love to you and Veronika, good luck) , little Anna (you are the best) , Ilary, ... read more

“On the road time is valueless”: the perfect epitaph for the real traveller! I actually have never believed to the tale of the value of time, not even in these sedentary times of my life, I mean. I guess that once, a very, very long ago, someone decided that “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”, and “Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today”, and “Procrastination is the thief of time” and so on with a long list of badly disguised invitations to dedicate one’s life to be productive. The folks at Eurolines must evidently have thoroughly accepted such theories and therefore their express bus Lisbon-Seville leaves at 7am. On Sunday. And, well, to make a long story short (do not forget that “time is money”), ... read more

This weekend we took our first trip out of Spain to visit Porto, Portugal - I LOVED it! There was a 100% chance of rain for the weekend, yet somehow it didn't rain the entire 2 days we were there, and it was also off season, so there were hardly any tourists and everything was sooo cheap. This all added up to a great weekend. We had a super early flight on Friday and arrived in Porto at our gorgeous guesthouse around noon. After dropping off our stuff, we wandered around the city admiring the historic architecture and beautiful churches before having a delicious, traditional menu of the day for lunch. We stepped inside the Casa do Infante to see some recently discovered Roman ruins, then headed down to the Rio Douro to walk along the ... read more

Hmmmm - think the guidebook might have taken a bit of poetic licence there, but more on that later. So, Adam and I headed to Lisboa, the capital of Portugal, for a weekend break. Lisboa has everything that you expect of a European city - an old town; a cathedral; a castle on the hill; a metro and a river. It also has the added factor that it is famous for its tiles - either covering the whole facade of a building, or forming smaller patterns around doors and windows. Lisboa is lovely, the people are friendly, there are good views over the town from the hills flanking the centre of town and the nightlife is great (more on that later). It's just that it's not the most amazing European city that I've been to (and ... read more

That's what Darrell Waltrip says at the start of the Nascar Races when the pace car heads for the pits and the cars really start to race., I shouldn't say that just yert, not until March 19th when I catch the plane for Lisbon, actually, Seattle, Atlanta, New York, then Lisbon. Presently, I'm busy learning Portuguese, actually trying to twist my Italian and Spanish into Portuguese. All three languages have a lot in common, but every once in a while I come across a word that is entirely different in all three, like butterfly--Italian is farfalla, Spanish, mariposa, and Portuguese, borboleta. I'm not sure, but I think the words that are entirely different help ground me in the apporpriate language. When a word is identical in all three, I feel as if my brain-train, having moved ... read more
