Thursday we visited Sonae Industria, Sonae Sierra, and Fortis. Sonae Industria is a manufacturer of laminated wood, and we got to tour their production and warehouse facilities. Sonae Sierra was an interesting company to hear about because they design shopping and leisure spaces. Having an interest in marketing, and especially how shelf displays and store layouts affect purchasing behaviors, it was neat to see some of their properties. Their competitive advantage is the innovation they put into the designs of their shopping centers. Actually, one of their properties - Via Catarina, a shopping mall - is right down the street from our hotel. We walked down there this evening to check it out, and the food court was nice - it was designed to look like the outside of little European village buildings (similar to some ... read more

Sozinha no more!! Europe » Portugal » Lisbon By AK JuliaApril 12th 2007Julia Normand Sozihna (pronounced so-zeen-yo) means all alone, solo. And now that I’, back in Lisboa, I am no longer sozihna because I am back with the people who first greeted me when I arrived her, Stephanie and Carla, the young women who run the pension. Tomorrow I’ll be in Nova Iorque-that’s Portuguese for New York—and I’ll be with friends there, so I have now shed my sozinha status. While I’m on Portuguese words, there’s one troublesome one I forgot to mention the other day, cao, pronounced cow, but is really dog. Today I went to an incredible garden in Sintra. See the pictures. Today’s en... read more

Well, luck tracked me down again. I caught the bus in front of the hotel, thinking it was heading for the Old train station where I'd have to take a shuttle to the New train station to catch a 10:20 train. I went real early and got two surprises: 1) the bus went to the New train station so I didn't have to shuttle to get there, and 2) my train was at 9:22--the agent at the station who sold me the ticket yesterday gave a ticket a different train than the one I asked for. Anyway, I had time for a coffee and pastry before catching the train. Luck also led me to a stroll across the 16th century aqueduct here. I followed the map to get a look at it, then I heard a ... read more

Tuesday we visited the Agencia Portuguesa para o Investimento (API), a government organization responsible for investment promotion, and ICEP Portugal, a government organization responsible for export promotion. Wednesday we visited Mota-Engil (a construction company), had lunch with MBA students from the University of Porto, and had two lectures at the university (acquisition strategies by Portuguese companies and inward & outward investment in Portugal). I was looking forward to getting a little bit of introduction on the Portuguese economy and initiatives since joining the EU (like we did in Dublin), but things here don't seem to be nearly as organized as in they are in Ireland. Portugal just doesn't quite seem to have their act together when it comes to advancing its economy and making itself competitive within the EU. Granted, they started out pretty low and ... read more

In fact, I think Coimbra's got SF beat with its hills. One of these days I'll be able to upload photos and you'll see what I mean. The University campus is on top of the major central hill. Portugal has a saying, "Lisbon shows off, Braga prays, Coimbra studies and Porto works." You gotta want to go to school to walk up there everyday. The BIG SURPRISE of the whole trip (I knew Coimbra was going to be special, but I didn't know how) was on the campus, a library that was built in 1717, especially to preserve books for many years. Its 7-foot thick walls and teak doors maintain the temperature, the teak also helps with the humidity. The oak shelves emit an oder that deters worms from growing, and the resident family of twenty ... read more

Dublin Photos Europe » Portugal » porto By Amanda MApril 9th 2007 Here are some photos I took in Dublin that I didn't get a chance to post. Enjoy!! Also, some interesting notes from the Guinness tour: - Nigeria drinks more Guinness than the US and Canada combined - Because of the levels of iron, magnesium, etc. in Guinness, it used to be advertised as "good for you" and "Guinness for strength" ... they actually used to give Guinness to blood donors (a pint of Guinness for a pint of blood) and to new mothers after giving birth to replenish nutrients in the body - Guinness' symbol is a harp, and when Ireland decided to use a harp as its national symbol, it told Guinness it would h... read more

I still can't upload pictures, but I'll tell you what I saw on my way here to Coimbra. I use the train for two reasons, one--the buses share the roads with all sorts of crazy drivers, two--I like seeing people's backyards with hay bales that look like the ones in the states (all wrapped in white), chiuckens, sheep, goats, ponies, huge lilies that grow like weeds, red clay dirt like in Georgia, cat tails, a lumber yard with the logs stacked with lots of space to dry, trees planted in rows like the ones in Washington and Oregon that grow near rivers and get harvested every seven years or so, and of course clothes hanging on lines. Here in Coimbra, I experience my first thunder. The rain has really cooperated with my schedule. I seem to ... read more

Not much going on today. Walked around to shops and bought some souvenirs. Then spent most of the afternoon working as much as I could make myself work on one of the 7-page single-spaced papers due at the end of this class. (grrrrr...) This wraps up our long weekend (and most of our free time) in Porto, and class starts back up tomorrow. We are supposed to be getting our "Portugal introduction" tomorrow and will be visiting agencies/organizations that focus on bringing in investments and promoting exports.... read more

Didn't make it to a service this morning - I hadn't done any research to find an English speaking service (if there were any), and others in the group were attending a Catholic mass in Portuguese. So my roommate and I slept in a little, then went to breakfast downstairs at the hotel. We didn't have breakfast included at the Dublin hotel, so everyone in the group was eating whatever they could find for breakfast. I had been eating a loaf of baked bread all week, so it was very exciting to have the opportunity to eat a real breakfast and to know that we will have a variety for the rest of the week. I don't think I've ever been so glad to see cereal and juice! We met up with some other people ... read more
