Yesterday Lisbon, Today Evora As I told you in yesterday’s blog, today was our first adventure using mass transit within Europe. Last night we had a decent dinner at a restaurant in Barrio Alto where we finally got a chance to try Vinho Verde, which is a carbonated wine. We tried a red variety and found it to be quite tasty (just like you said Leigh C.) but it also packs a decent punch. After the bottle was done I felt a little light headed and Kel was half way drunk. After dinner we got some pastries (Pastel de Nata: see previous blog entry) and then went and got ice cream at Haagen Dazs (SP?). Kel and I each had a single scoop in a cone and sat in a plaza and enjoyed our surroundings. ... read more

I got to the train station in Coimbra about an hour before the train was due to leave. So, I sat around in the sun reading. I happened to look over at my bag and I noticed it had four or five little baby spiders crawling around trying to build little webs on it. I flicked them off and went back to reading. About 10 minutes later I looked over again. Once again there were some little spiders crawling around. So, I flicked those off as well and resumed reading. For the third time I looked over and found more little spiders. So, I got up and started investigating the pack. I knocked a couple little ones off before I discovered the mommy spider. It was a bit big for me to go flicking it off, ... read more

Once again I awoke to fantastic weather (I'm getting spoiled) and walked to the bus station to catch a bus to the city of Guarda, Portugal. Up until now I've been able to use my rail pass to get around in Europe, but getting into Portugal by rail pretty much requires you to take an overnight train to Porto or Lisboa, which I didn't want to do. So, I bought a 13€ bus ticket to the first place inside Portugal where I could hop back on the rail network. It took about 1.5 hours to get to the border, where we stopped at a rest area and I had to switch buses. After a short break, the new bus set off for the border, which turned out to be a full-on checkpoint. I was quite surprised. ... read more

Hello All…. We now have 126 people signed up for our blog and we want to thank you all for your faithful readership. I strongly believe in the power of positive reinforcement and therefore want to take a moment to tell you how much it means to us that you read, comment and email us. It makes all this writing much more fun! So, thanks!! Our time in Lisbon Dwindles The Gublenkian Museum Yesterday we decided to take it easy since we were still a little tired from our long hike to Castle Pena. Thus, we decided to head to the local art museum and otherwise do very little. The Gublenkian museum was opened in 1969 and has some really cool galleries. We greatly enjoyed the Chinese vases and furniture from 15th century France. Since we ... read more

The weather this past weekend was the best it has been in a few weeks, so we rented a car and took a little road trip. On Saturday, we went with a few American friends from Lindsay’s class to a town called Óbidos, which was holding its annual chocolate festival. We also went to see the beaches in nearby Nazaré. On Sunday Lindsay and I went to Conímbriga, a Roman ruins about 20 minutes from Coimbra. This was our first time driving in Portugal and we were a little apprehensive, but the toll highways were great (although a little bit expensive) and people drove more conservatively than we expected. I drove like a good foreigner and only went 10 kph over the speed limit, which made us one of the slower cars. My only real ... read more

Glorious Lisbon, for whatever reason, seems to have gotten the shaft by tourists visiting western europe. Considering its incredible landscape, history, architecture, people, cuisine, and language, its really a shame that its visited with such less frequency than other cities. I can honestly say that Lisbon is my new favorite city in Western Europe, beating out the big guys like Paris, London, and Madrid. Unless Rome and Florence totally enchant me next month, Lisbon is going to reign supreme... Being that this past week we had Thursday off, much of Spain goes on little trips for the long weekend. My friends Casey, Katie, and I decided we would head to Portugal, taking advantage of its proximity as well as the fact that Casey and I had both started learning Portuguese. Well it ended up that Casey ... read more

Buses…we don’t need no stinking buses Sintra…a Portuguese King’s Paradise Last night we decided today would be our first out of town adventure. It served multiple purposes, (1) to see the beautiful town of Sintra and explore its castles and palaces, (2) to give me a little experience with the European metro and train system, even if it was a commuter train. To get to Sintra we had to head north via metro and then transfer to one of Lisbon’s many train stations called Sete Rios. From there it was a short 35 minute train trip to our final destination. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to use the train system. Of course, this trip is only a test for what’s to come, it will be much more difficult with my 40 ... read more

For my last few days in the country, things in Portugal have gone entirely Portuguese. A transit strike shuts down Lisbon during the morning rush, and Sete Rios - the main bus hub out of the city - suddenly feels as good as half-way to Madrid. Traffic snarl-ups have knotted the streets of Lapa. I’m caught in their slow, peristaltic push as I make my way to the station - my knapsack packed for an afternoon of wandering the walled city of Evora. What was supposed to be one last, ecstatic send-off into Spain is touched by sadness from the second I get off the bus. Four weeks in Portugal - twice what I’d planned - have left a giant knot in my throat. I’m struck by that peculiar sentiment common to travelers: of feeling ... read more

Dinner of Simple Food Can be so Satisfying After resting for a few hours we decided to head out into Lisbon at a much more reasonable time than Wednesday night. Reasonable for Portugal, head to dinner at 8:00pm. We went to this great little Alentejo restaurant called aptly enough, Casa do Alentejo. Alentejo is a region of Portugal to the south of Lisbon which is known for its simple food, and some joke, simple people. To get to the restaurant you go into a small door off a busy street. The door looks sketchy and closed but when you get inside you immediately go up a flight of steps and into a beautifully tiled room. Once inside, and up yet another flight of steps, you enter the restaurant. They had a menu in English which ... read more
