It was a dark stormy night.....well not really, but it was night. We got into the airport taxi and showed him the address to the apartment we rented here in Lisbon. When we got near to our address, it was dark. We asked the driver: "is this a safe neighborhood?" He answered: "No." Geri looked at me like What the F did you do?!?! So we asked him if he could elaborate, and he replied: "hookers." Um..ok. Let me interrupt the narrative to say that Lisbon is built on steep hills. He then stopped his cab at the BOTTOM of the hill and said "Sorry, dont know where it is, you have to get out here" So we got out, with 75 lbs of luggage at the bottom of what we thought was a knife wielding ... read more

So, caught the train from Porto back through Lisbon and down to Albufeira, in the Algarve region of southern Portugal. You can´t get much more south Portugal than this. We´re about 20 mins from Lagos (pronounced La-goosh), which is a really hopping tourist town, particularly for the youth. I think there is some decent surfing around these parts too. By the way, the Portuguese language is a whole lot of shhs and zzhshhs and is quite a bit different than Spanish, even despite the similarities. We had an okay time in Spain trying to converse, but it´s a bit harder here. Most people speak some english though, so it´s been ok. The train ride was about 7 or 8 hours all done. We got to the train station and it was like we rolled into this ... read more

We took a day trip this Saturday to visit Porto, the second biggest city in Portugal, and the home of port wine. Porto is on the coast and is a 1-hour train ride north of Coimbra. The most popular attractions in Porto are the port wine lodges which are actually across the Douro river in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia. The port wine lodges have been used as warehouses for port aging, storage, and shipping since the mid 18th century. These days most companies have updated their warehouses with tasting rooms and tours. Visiting here was almost like going to Napa or Sonoma (or other wine regions), but all of the lodges are really close together so it’s pretty easy to walk between them. We went to three lodges: a tour and tasting at ... read more

Cruised into Porto about 5pm after a 4 hour train ride. Took a cab to the hotel which was about a 2 minute walk and a 2 minute funicular ride (or a 5 min walk updown a lot of old sketchy cobblestone stairs) from the river. Down along the river is a nice bridge off of Avenida de Gustav Eiffel and it looks like the bridge was designed by him too. We had some dinner at a nice little restaurant along the river, Leah forgot to bring enough money, so I had to boot it back to the hotel, but it was all good. Watched Troy subtitled in Portuguese and had an early night. Our neighbourhood where the hotel was was pretty dirty and seemed kind of sketchy at night, so we really didn´t feel like ... read more

Today we are in Lisbon, Portugal. When I stepped off the ship to go to our tour bus, I had to stop and do a double take. For a minute I thought the Captain had made a mistake and docked in San Francisco. To my relief I found that the illusion was The 25th of April Bridge over the Tagus River. Our first stop for the day is a park along the river that has two spectacular monuments. The first is the Belem Tower. Commissioned by Manuel I, the tower of Belem was built as a fortress in the middle of the Tagus in 1515-21. Starting point for the navigators who set out to discover the trade routes, this Manueline gem became a symbol of Portugal's great era of expansion. The real beauty of the tower ... read more

got back into Lisbon and basically did nothing but rested and went out for dinner with Larry and Melissa. This is the last night of the tour and we are beat. Seriously time for some rest. We had dinner in a little Italian Portuguese restaurant near the hotel after walking around a huge block trying to find something more authentic, but the neighbourhood wasn´t that inspiring. Very hood like. Dinner was nice anyway. I (Zane) started getting some intestinal issues (which I´m surprised didn´t start till now) so I wasn´t feeling all that adventurous, and our last night in Lisbon was pretty low key. From here on in, we were on our own. Got up in the morning and hit the train to Porto, which was about a 4 hour train ride. Z... read more

We just finished our first week of classes. It’s a pretty intense schedule, with 23 hours of class a week and four different subjects. We’re both in the beginning level, which has moved really fast (present tense, present progressive, ser vs. estar - all in the first 4 days!). As we expected, we are among the oldest students in the class. There are about 35 students in our class, and maybe 3 or 4 other people who are beyond standard college age. It’s been fine, though, and a lot of the students are really friendly. We’re the only Americans, and there are two girls from Quebec, and everyone else is European - there are a surprising number of students from Eastern Europe - Lithuania, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary - as well as a lot from Turkey. We ... read more

We arrived in Lisbon on an EasyJet flight from Paris at around 2 in the afternoon. From the airport we took the tourist bus into town and found the tourism office nearby the bus stop. The first thing that struck me about Lisbon was that it was freaking HOT. Felt like I´d died and gone to Visalia in August. Anyway we managed to get another bus, after a bit of getting lost and walking around carrying about 40 pounds each in the blazing sun and 95-plus degree heat. we took that bus to the campsite located in a large municipal park in the middle of the city. though it was in the middle of the city, it was not near any part of the tourist interest of Lisbon, but it was dirt cheap and so we ... read more

It was a hot month July … fortunately there were cool moments as well! Rotterdam was breathing jazz with the North Sea Jazz Festival and all kind of spillover events like the concerts at Dizzy, Floor or Prachtig. I liked very much the Brazilian-jazz concert in Doelen, with the Portuguese singer Magda Mendes. She started in her tiptoes but got more expansive as more people started entering the room. Yet, the absolute jazz related highlight was the 5-dinner-course jazz concert at Eendracht. What can I say? There were really moments of perfection: The complicity of Dana, Johan and Thomas, Pepijn’s menu, the blue notes, her voice, her presence … the Calabria’s glass as preface and that white-chocolate dessert … a ‘desiderio di morte’! “We cannot resist to a old wine, neither to a new idea” ... read more
