Saturday, August 3, 2013 So this morning we woke up and had breakfast and went straight to the beach!! The one we went to was the same one was as last last time we went to the beach (the one were we ran on the beach... yeah that one)!!!! So when we got there we set up our towels and every thing. This morning was cleaning up the house and packing...not too exciting. Also saying goodbye to cute little Stig. We'll sure miss the little fella. He was an affectionate little guy and always happy to see us! In the mornings when we would leave, he would chase after our car to say goodbye! Then we drove to the Faro airport to get our rental car. Well, I hate to do this to you, but we had yet another Seinfeld moment......the lady behind the counter was having difficulty finding our reservation. I had a printout of the confirmation and she finally found it. Well, the reservation was for a mid-sized car. All she had available was a tiny little Citroen C1 (subcompact). With our 3 large bags and 3 carryons (very little luggage considering the length of our ... read more

After visiting Sintra and the coast, we went to the beach near our house but we did not stay long because it was much more windy than in Algarve. So we relaxed there for a while, read a bit and then came back home to prepare before going out in Lisbon. We were indeed meeting a friend from Düsseldorf and a couchsurfer from Lisbon for dinner and then going for a drink. Our friend from Düsseldorg had been the day before to a nice, very little and cheap restaurant, where there were serving fish :) So we went there all together and it was really good. Afterwards, we went for a walk in the city center. We tasted a local alcohol called "Ginjinha" (or cherry-cherry for Lidia ;) ), it is made out of infusing sour ... read more

After a 4-hour bus drive, we arrived in Lisbon at lunch time. Thanks to the great advice of our host Miguel in Faro, we already knew what we wanted to do on our 1st afternoon there: visit Belem district. In Belem district, there are some nice buildings along the river and a monastery as well. The monastery Mosteiro dos Jerónimos was looking so amazing from outside with all those small details on the white stone. This building is of Gothic-style. Inside the monastery church were some people buried and among them was VASCO DE GAMA!! After this visit, we went near the river to see the Conquistador building which is in a shape of a boat with sailors on it looking at the sea. In Portugal, a lot ... read more

Today I focused on the sights just down the Tagus River from Lisbon, in an area called Belem. This is the true heart of old Lisbon, back in the early 1500s when Portugal discovered the sea route to India, and the country became incredibly rich. Massive buildings projects appeared, including the famous Jeronimos Monastery. This place stretches for an entire block, and contains incredible cloisters done in what is called the Manueline style, after the Portuguese king at the time of all the sea voyages. It's basically just defined by really ornate decorations, and a lot of symbols relating to the sea, like ships and ropes and such. The Monastery also contains the tomb of Vasco da Gama, the man who discovered the route to India in 1498. Also in the area is the Belem Tower, ... read more

Woke up bright and early, had a quick breakfast at the hotel, and took the 30 minute train ride to Sintra. This little town is the Versailles of Portugal, being home, as it is, to the many palaces of Portugal's recently extinct royal family. It's also a very pretty town, perched on several hills covered in thick trees. I first started at the palace at the absolute top of town, called Pena Palace. Of the 3 in town, Pena is actually relatively new, dreamed up by a Romantically-inspired prince in the 19th century. It's therefore a sometimes weird collection of styles and designs, from Arab gates to almost pastel colored walls to Disneyland-like towers. Incredible views as well. Next hiked down about ten minutes to the ruined Moorish castle walls. These date from I think the ... read more

Literally spent the entire day traveling, starting off in Keswick, and right now sitting in downtown Lisbon. That entailed nearly every form of travel, from a bus from Keswick to Penrith Rail Station, then the train to Manchester Airport, a 2 and a half hour plane ride South to Portugal, and finally another bus into the city. Really wasn't intense, though, just boring. A lot of sitting around waiting for things. And honestly, I'm glad to be out of England. The best word I've decided for the English is "quirky," or even just downright weird. They hike with ski poles and drive on the wrong side of the road. And anyway, England, while it has nice sights, just doesn't feel any different from the States. It's not at all exotic, and, at times, kind of boring ... read more

Such a lovely view coming into Lisbon up the Tagus River going under the soaring 25th of April Bridge, took probably 3/4 hour to get into Lisbon on the river and docked at 9.00a.m. We had a walking tour booked prior to leaving home and had to meet our guide in the Rossio Square at 10.00a.m. - so it was pretty tight getting there by the time we actually got off the ship. Turned out we were there a little early so had a coffee and one of those to die for Portuguese tarts, cake shop in Ballarat St, Yarraville makes them but these here in Lisbon were the best. Had not realised that a large part of this city was destroyed by earthquake in 1755 but beautifully rebuilt. Six of us on the walking tour ... read more

Chelsea's first trip!We decided on Portugal even before she was born. We envisioned a couple weeks driving through the country, tasting Port, relaxing on the sunny beaches, paddling down picturesque lakes. After she was born, we realized it would be better for her, and us, if we used Lisbon as our home base and did day trips by train. We had a great trip! With Chelsea strapped in the carrier (the cobblestone roads were not conducive to comfortable stroller transport), we explored the city streets, went in and out of cafes and restaurants, and found shadey trees to relax under. Our day in Sintra included a beautiful walk through Quinta da Regaleira. We walked through underground caves, and one lead to the bottom of this really cool well. Cascais was a touristy beach town where we ... read more

I woke up quite early this morning, due to everyone else in the room getting up this morning. I woke up right as my guy friend was leaving. I didn’t have a chance to talk to him before he left, or say goodbye. After I got ready, I went down stairs to eat the free breakfast. I had cereal, toast, and orange juice. After that I decided to go and see the tower of Belem today. This time, I got on the right train, but got off at a farther stop. So I walked a little until I found it. It was really pretty, and surrounded by some guards. I didn’t go inside because I honestly didn’t think it would be worth the money. I continued to walk farther down and found a really cool monument. ... read more
