Lisbon has trams like Melbourne had a half century ago and so we have trammed up and down the hills of this beautiful city seeing all the sights. They provide a great way to get around the city and are very popular with the tourists. The screeching of the wheels and rattling around brought back memories of the old w class trams I used to catch each day to school. Though these ones are a lot smaller and less comfortable. But a lot of fun. Mentioning tourists though, Lisbon is a seething mass of tourists from all over Portugal, the rest of Europe and the world generally. They fill the cafes and restaurants, the trams, streets and bars. If the tourists were all to suddenly go away this place would grind to a halt and unemployment ... read more

We decided to break up the trip from Cadiz to Lisbon with an overnight stop at the seaside town of Lagos. It is a pretty little town where the wind seems to blow a gale most of the time. A really nice intro to Portugal with some great beaches, wonderful old town atmosphere of narrow streets and outdoor restaurants and some coastal geographical features. Oh and a number of almost obligatory Roman fort ruins. It wasn't till the following day we found we had gained an hour with not knowing Portugal's time zone. A quick check on a world globe reveals why this would be although apparently Portugal struggled with this for a while and only settled on the same time zone as the UK in the 1990's. Now the drive into Lisbon was fraught with ... read more

Up early as today we are off to the town of Sintra. Sintra is a picturesque Portuguese town that is set amidst the pine-covered hills of the Serra de Sintra. This hilly and slightly cooler climate enticed the nobility and elite of Portugal, who constructed exquisite palaces, extravagant residences and decorative gardens. We boarded a train for the 45 minute journey. Once in Sintra town we caught a bus to our first destination, Quinta da Regaleira palace, which is a decorative stately home but for us the main attraction was the elaborate grounds. The gardens are filled with mystic symbolism and hidden features which include secret tunnels, Gothic towers and stone fortified walls. Our first objective was to get to the Initiation Well before it got to busy with other tourists. The well is 27 metres ... read more

Up and ready to enjoy our first full day in Lisbon. We boarded tram 28 just outside our apartment and headed for Commercial Square to catch another tram to the Belem area of Lisbon. We had a quick breakfast at an outdoor cafe before heading to the long line ups outside the Monastery of Jerónimo. The Monastery is one of the most decorative churches of Portugal. The southern entrance is bounded by a 32 meter high stone portal that incorporates carvings of the saints, complex shaped pinnacles and other decorative features. Inside the spindly columns support massive vaulted ceilings and lead to an ornamental altar. The fine stone detail extends into the monastery, which is to the rear of the church and is centered around a unique two level cloister. After the initial construction of the ... read more

Up early to drop off our home exchange vehicle, which had a scheduled appointment, before arriving at the train station by a car service. We enjoyed a coffee before boarding the train for our 3 1/2 hour trip to Lisbon. Upon our arrival at the Lisbon train station we then wandered up fairly steep cobbled stone streets to our VRBO apartment. Our apartment was on the second floor and had a great view of the famous tram 28 that passes directly below it. The building actually rattles as the tram rumbles by! It is a nice apartment with patio area and we are right in the heart of the historical area of Alfama. After unloading our stuff we headed out to have some lunch. Once lunch was over we were off to the metro station as ... read more

Upon arrival to Lisbon, we took the subway from the airport to Bairo Alto's "Restauradores" station. Metro system is very easy to figure out and boy did we enjoy their comfy seating after 24 hrs of travel :) it's less than 2€ per ride, or you can get a daily pass for 6€ which allows you to hop on any public transportation (metro, bus, tram, elevador) Our first glimpse out of the metro was the Cervejaria Santiago and the cobble stone streets. To get to our apartment, we had to climb up the steep hill by foot, or -to our delight- ride the unique "elevador" that comfortably carries us up the hill. Truly a fun experience. Few steps up after our elevador ride, and we stumble on the "miraduro" (the look out) uncovering a stunning view ... read more

Arrived in Lisbon 9.00a.m. even though we were here in 2013 we were looking forward to our time here again, but took a while to dock as there was another cruise ship in port, eventually got out of the ship around 9.30 and then a few minutes walk to get out of the terminal, and there was beautiful Emanuel waiting for us, with his “I Hate Tourism Tours” sign, a gorgeous 34 year old Portuguese guy who was so passionate about his country, we love this, listening to people who just love their country so much. His Dad was an ambassador and diplomat and he has lived in France, Brussels and Portugal, so he has experienced living abroad. He whisked us away in the 9 seater van with 6 of us on board through the streets ... read more

We arrived in Lisbon by car, we drive our rental car to the airport and turn it in. We read driving in Lisbon is not a good idea. We took a taxi to our hotel, only 10 euros. We walked around looking for a store and a restaurant. We found a small store and bought cereal, milk, water and bananas. We prefer to eat a light breakfast in our room instead of eating out. We are hungry but we had a hard time finding a restaurant open, it was too early only six so we settled on the only place open and it was not great. We were happy to find the hotel had left us a small bottle of 10 year aged port in our room, how nice. This morning we headed to the metro ... read more

The sun is out and the temperature is about 18. It doesn't get much nicer than that. Today, we met Paulo, the only Jewish guide in Lisbon. This was planned. Our friends Howard and Becky recommended him. We met him at the Arch, down by the water and he gave us his family's story. He told us about his grandfather trying to get from Poland to Argentina during the war but getting caught up in Italy. He ended up spending the war hiding in a convent. After the war he met his wife and they remained in Italy. where his father was born His father was an engineer and was working in Lisbon which is where he met Paulo's mother. His mother came from a family in Portugal that traced back over 300 years but until ... read more

Twenty four hours have passed since daylight yesterday and as light came up today......nothing much has changed with the weather, just more drizzly rain. We are either going to have to do what we did yesterday and take on Lisbon in the rain or vegetate in the apartment. We waited and eventually as the morning passed the weather did show signs of improving and so we decided to make the drive into the city around 20km away and see what we could achieve by way of sightseeing. If we only did one thing then catching the #28 tram which is essentially a tourist tram would be our aim. As we headed down to the coastal N7 road that would take us into the city the sun started to break through the clouds out to sea and ... read more
