Another beautiful day on our adventure and today we head to Lisbon. But first some unfinished business in Coimbra and what better place to start than breakfast at the pastelaria we visited yesterday. We still wanted to visit the university, the oldest in Portugal. For reasons known only to the creators of this wonderful institution it was built on top of the hill. Actually it was once a royal palace and this is the reason it is so high above the city. So once again we climbed up steep, narrow, cobbled, streets. You need an entry ticket to visit the historical parts of the university so out came our New Zealand Teacher Registration Certificates and we received the concession entry. We were lucky to witness a student presenting her research to a jury and faculty leader ... read more

Saturday night and we're off to dinner at the home of Maria's cousin Jorge and his wife Olga. They live in a suburb called Carregado, which can properly be called one of the new urban villages of Lisboa, designed to house the workers in the various factory operations that surround the city. To look at Carregado, it is utilitarian and ordinary and you would never know that it houses the likes of a man like Jorge. I say this because Jorge is a big, life-loving fellow who swings through his existence with unsupressed joy. Within minutes of meeting him, I could see that we speak the same language. Jorge drove out to Cammarat to pick us up, and on a whim, decided to give us a driving tour of the newer parts of downtown Lisboa. At ... read more

We finally reached my favorite city in the world. But then, I'm biased... I was born here. The train stations in Portugal are all very interesting. The station we arrived at in Lisboa is called Orient, a newer train station built for Expo 98. It's all glass, metal and cement , but the design is wonderful. It's a very open-space concept that from afar looks like palm trees; really beautiful. The only time we were a bit apprehensive was by the elevator. The glass floor in front of the elevator had some deep cracks in it so we all stood back until the elevator came and then quickly jumped in when the doors opened. Down we went with a sigh of relief to the taxi queue. For me this was the best part of our trip. I ... read more

On our last night in Portugal we ventured out to a different part of town. Tonight we went to one of what was considered the best Italian restaurants in Lisboa. It was very tasty! Our waiter even mentioned that the prime minister even dines there. When we closed the restaurant we started talking to one of our waiters about travel and America. Our waiter, Jorge got very interested in hearing about America as that is his dream to go to one day and back-pack across the states. Then he got in trouble for "staying" at our table so long. So we felt so bad, we offered to go out for a drink afterwards. Jorge had learned English by working on a cruise ship in the Mediterranean and ready books, it was very good. We trekked across ... read more

At first, Lisbon just seemed like another European city, albeit one with an incredibly long bridge across the Tagus River that seemed to disappear into the horizon. However, I discovered that this is a unique city and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring it and some of the nearby towns. My favourite area of Lisbon is undoubtedly the old Arabic quarter, known as the Alfama. It is typified by streets only narrow enough to squeeze your shoulders through, winding their way up and down the hill between the port and the Castelo de São Jorge (St George's Castle). From above, this part of Lisbon looks like the houses and churches are built atop of one another in a pattern too complex for Google Maps to discern. Giving someone directions for a café in this part of Lisbon would ... read more

Monday 22nd November to Sunday 28th November 2010. Monday 22nd November 2010 Lisbon. Today nearly all museums are closed so we made it our housework day. 3 loads of clothes washing and drying, update diary, finish and publish travel blog. After lunch we walked over to the huge shopping complex near here. Tom has been looking for a nice winter coat but unable to find one, so after looking for a while we went to dinner and then off to the movies and saw ‘Inside Job’. Very interesting about the collapse of the financial market in 2008. Taxi home. Tuesday 23rd November 2010. Tom woke up with very sore throat and a snuffly nose. Into town about 11am to look for more information on Portugal at the Portugal Tourist Office, but the Lisbon tourist office said ... read more

HI all Well we've been in Portugal for over 3 weeks now, here's were we've been so far. Thursday 14th October Our first stop was just over the border at a site in Caminha and as the name suggests it is on the banks of the Minha river, from the empty beach we looked north across the estuary and back into Spain from where we had just come, it was literally a stones throw away. The site was run by a company called Orbitur who run around 20 sites along the coast of Portugal, more details to come on them later, the site was to a decent standard and next to the beach. We spent 2 days here, again on the beach and in the sea and having the locals watch us thinking are they stupid ... read more

Update it's 7.50 in the morning and I am in bed listening to the pouring rain and the trucks removing hundreds of bottles. Last night and the night before we had a party happening outside our corner room in the street outside both of our windows. Apparently we are staying in the party area where there are 100s of bars. things don't start to happen until around 1.00am. Also yesterday absolutely poured also so we were unable to do our walking tour and not much else. It finally eased up after lunch so we went to a contemporary museum and saw an Andy Warhol exhibition which we both enjoyed. We also saw some other very weird modern art. I am seriously hoping the rain stops this morning or we might want to kill each other.... read more

Wow I know I have complained before but Lisbon is built on mountains, that's what I think anyway others might think they are only hills. On the map we got it looked like our hostel was only a few streets away from where the bus dropped us from the airport. Unfortunately we did'nt take into account that it was all up hill by cobbled streets and we had to drag our luggage up with us. My suitcase is very heavy now with all the presents I have bought for Melanie!!!!!!!! We made it though and after our 5.30am start we were sooooooo happy to get there. The hostel is in the old part of the city called Bairro Alto and it seemed very quaint and quiet when we arrived. We went to bed very early as ... read more

As the dreary mid October weather in London hits us, we fight back by taking off for a weekend trip to sunny Lisbon, and it didn't disappoint. A couple of perfect 25 degree days were great for sightseeing around the capital of Portugal, a city with a rich history and whilst small in numbers, quite a sparse and spread out city with many windy, hilly streets to tire us out. In the 16th Century, Lisbon was the centre of the world, the Portugese empire the largest and the conquerers of the sea thought they were invincible. 400 years later and it seems they are now famous for not much more than Peri Piri chicken and Christiano Ronaldo - somewhere things went horribly wrong for the Portugese. Unbelievably though, we did not see a single Nandos in ... read more
