We touched down in Frankfurt airport at 9 am and with twelve hours to spare before our next flight; we hopped on the train into town. I lived here in Frankfurt for a year, sixteen years ago and it felt really good to be back; it was Paulo's first taste of Germany. As we walked along the shopping streets of the city, we spotted a busy food market and went in for a closer look. Older German men sat in groups drinking beer, smartly dressed workers stood around eating snacks on their lunch breaks and hundreds of people filled the square. We spent the afternoon eating bratwurst and schnitzel and drinking wine with the locals before making our way back to the airport for our onward flight to Portugal. We flew into Faro and travelled north ... read more

On my way to the airport in Milan a Moroccan guy called Saad started speaking to me, he was such a lovely guy, we arranged to meet up in Casablanca when I go, how exciting! Then on the plane (2 hours late of course) I started trying to have a conversation with a Portuguese guy called Umberto who doesn’t speak English. So we ended up giving up on trying to speak to each other and listening to Cat Empire on my mp3 player instead, which he said he likes! My host in Lisbon was so fantastic! Antoñio was recommended to me for a host by Emi who I stayed with in Prague, she went to stay with him before. He picked me up from the airport with his three friends Fred, Tania and Evania and we ... read more

Walk into an 'Iper' in Portugal, as any self respecting self caterer who happens to be in Portugal will do at some time - we are actually secretly carrying out a world wide review of supermarkets of all kinds but that is another story - and you will immediately pick up the whiff. Walk down a road past a restaurant, almost any restaurant it seems, and you will smell it being cooked. Even now, around our camp, your nostrils will be quivering at the lovely aroma of bacalhau in its dried and cooking states. Cerverjas is simply Portuguese for beer and it goes well with bacalhau. 'Dios' is 2 in Portuguese and if you don't know what 'por favor' means then you haven't watched Fawlty Towers. And enough with the language lesson. You obviously get used ... read more

Hello happy bloggers... We are back travelling western Europe this time. We started in Portugal 10 days ago .. landing into Lisbon. A few days exploring the old city and climbing up to the fortress on top of the hill overlooking the city. From there on to Sintra in the hills where the kings of old spent the hot summer days hunting and generally enjoying the spoils of Aztec gold that was being returned by explorers to the new world. From Sintra we headed north to Nazare on the coast for a few days of sun and surf.. not that either of us surf you understand.. but the waves were worthy of it. On to the hilltop town of Tolmar encircled by its wonderful wall and overlooked by a fortress. Wonderfull little place.. then to Coimbra ... read more

A couple days after my last update we were in Gibraltar. Although I didn’t get off the ship it seamed like a bumpin place. Lots of small little shops within walking distance of the port. From the ship you can see 3 different countries; Morocco, Spain, and Gibraltar which is technically the UK. The port is incredibly busy and apparently it’s because of cheap fuel, but it’s clear that the waters are still crystal clear and full of fish. I can’t wait to get off somewhere and go diving. The straight itself is only 6 miles wide and because of the massive currents between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic (up to 5 knots) over time the straight has become over 1000 meters deep. Corsica is an incredible island; I think I’m going to have to come ... read more

So I have decided that the best way to enjoy a city, at least on a trip like this, is in about 4 days or so. Its long enough where you begin to feel like home where you are staying and know the area pretty well, but not long enough where you feel you have overstayed your welcome or feel like you are stagnating. In four days you can see a decent bit of a city and still have time to make some sort of day trip to a beach or nearby town or whatever. That was my plan for today, to take the train about 30 miles northwest to Sintra. As lonelyplanet.com describes it "With richly hued palaces, mist-covered forests and the ruins of a craggy Moorish castle overlooking a sleepy village, Sintra is like ... read more

As today is a travel day and my last day in Lisbon I didn't do anything real exciting. Went down to the Santa Apolonia train station to book my overnight train just to be safe. The plan is to try and rush from the Chamartin train station in Madrid where I will arrive, to the Atocha station where I would get a train to Granada. It's going to be close making that connection. If I miss it Ill just put my bag in a locker in a station and go wander around Madrid waiting for the evening train, not the worst back-up plan. Anyways, after that I went and took a nap on the steps of some monument in the main square here. Now hundreds of tourists will have pictures of this beautiful city square with ... read more

Got off to a pretty slow start today for a couple reasons. For one we were up pretty late last night and two, I had to do laundry. So I dropped off a load downstairs and paid the hefty 7 euro fee. Not really sure how that is justified but there is no way I am wasting my time washing, drying and folding that stuff when I am on vacation. Spent the couple hours I had to kill waiting for the load to be done looking into future travel plans and sending out some couch surfing vibes to people along my route. Right now it looks like I will skip the south of Portugal (the Algarve) and just head to Andalucia with a possible stop in Madrid thrown in. For some reason the beaches of the ... read more

Got a great night of sleep last night to compensate for the night before. Checked out of the dull hostel I had got into just the night before so I could go get a little taste of Coimbra before heading to Lisbon. Coimbra was really not much more than I expected. It is still a very attractive city and fun to talk around for a day in but I dont see much more than that. I walked around the university which has been around since 1290 I believe. Its on top of a hill which overlooks most of a city which is pretty cool. After that I didnt really plan on seeing much else so I went shopping for a pair of shorts and a t-shirt to replace the ones I left at Adam's back in ... read more

Quite an interesting day in Lisbon, albeit a good one. Got a little bit of the history of the country and city and then followed that up with a little taste of the current politics. I went on a walking tour of the old district of Lisbon in the morning. It was just a small group of us which was nice, pretty personal. We had our tour guide, Bernardo, a local around our age, myself, Adam the Australian from last night and two cool people from Brazil. It was pretty informal but we did get some good historical info to back up what we saw. Hit most of the main points in the city including a couple churches, some plazas, the castle on top of the hill and more. Certainly a good way to see the ... read more
