Got a great night of sleep last night to compensate for the night before. Checked out of the dull hostel I had got into just the night before so I could go get a little taste of Coimbra before heading to Lisbon. Coimbra was really not much more than I expected. It is still a very attractive city and fun to talk around for a day in but I dont see much more than that. I walked around the university which has been around since 1290 I believe. Its on top of a hill which overlooks most of a city which is pretty cool. After that I didnt really plan on seeing much else so I went shopping for a pair of shorts and a t-shirt to replace the ones I left at Adam's back in Glasgow. This was probably the best part of the town, walking through the tiny winding back alleys that lead down from the university to the base of the town alongside the river. Got what I was looking for after walking around for a while, but the sights made it quite worth it.
Ended up catching a train at 15:57 to Lisbon and after a
couple of hours we pulled into the Lisboa-Apolonia train station. I decided to walk to the hostel from here as the map made it seem pretty close. I think it still is but I somehow ended up walking in the opposite direction and ended up in just a complete residential neighborhood on the city limits. Not good times, bad times. Somehow the spot that I finally decided to give in and admit I was lost was right next to a subway. The subway here really isnt too complicated so after a 20 minute ride I was back in the neighborhood I needed to be in. Getting off the subway you are immediately struck by the city landscape around you. Just neverending winding streets up and down hills no matter where you seem to go. I have not seen much of Lisboa so far and did not know what to expect but so far so so good. Got to my hostel (Oasis Backpackers) in the early evening and this place is spectacular. Here is a quick list: walking tours by a local, we hate tourism tours out to surrounding areas, portuguese woman cooking us dinner for 5 euro a head every
night, has its own bar outside. Very highly recommended place (awesome staff as well).
Ended up meeting a girl from Canada after putting down my stuff in my 12 man bed and ended up going out to dinner with her and a group for the aforementioned we ahte tourism tour this morning. Pretty eclectic group, her, me, backpacker from Oz, filipino-english woman and a 19 year old kid from Florida with his 60 year old uncle. This guy, Richard was fantastic haha. I would love to be his age and still doing stuff like this. And he wasnt just along for the ride with his nephew. He would fit in with any group of travelers. Anyways, we had an awesome dinner at this traditional portuguese place recommended to us and then went out to the popular late night area for a few drinks at a couple places. The night life here is insane. We just had a quiet night and headed home around 2-3 am and this is when people are heading out for the nights. The streets were just packed. very excited for tomorrow night. Lisbon walking tour tomorrow.
