OLD TOWN
Overlooking the harbour and our ship Such a lovely view coming into Lisbon up the Tagus River going under the soaring 25th of April Bridge, took probably 3/4 hour to get into Lisbon on the river and docked at 9.00a.m. We had a walking tour booked prior to leaving home and had to meet our guide in the Rossio Square at 10.00a.m. - so it was pretty tight getting there by the time we actually got off the ship. Turned out we were there a little early so had a coffee and one of those to die for Portuguese tarts, cake shop in Ballarat St, Yarraville makes them but these here in Lisbon were the best. Had not realised that a large part of this city was destroyed by earthquake in 1755 but beautifully rebuilt. Six of us on the walking tour ( 3 hours) and it was just perfect to see and learn about this lovely city. I think Lisbon is totally underrated and we thoroughly enjoyed our time. Our guide Carla took us into three different neighbour hoods and we really did get a very nice feel for her much loved city, a little bit of history and more about how the people live and
BAKERY
Those yummy tarts their day to day goings on - just perfect! We caught one of their old trams at one point to get us up into the old town where we had a great view over the city and our ship docked below. She took us to a Gingha house, where we had a nip at 11.00a.m., their type of port with cherries in it - then onto a bakery and got to taste another of those gorgeous tarts - did the usual most important landmarks in the city and went up and down dale around their winding little streets and ended up at the Museum of Beer, what a spot to end our delightful tour on a scorching 34 degree Lisbon day! Two whopping beers with a complimentary plate of prawns with lemon - just what the doctor ordered!
