Je my suis beaucoup plu.

We had the good fortune to have our paths cross with Overlord whilst still in Lisbon. On the day our repaired sails were delivered, the last of the Portugal guests left and the Overlord crew were in town. We met up and had a meal with Steph, Hilary, Judith and John Scatchard, accompanied by a couple of experienced salty sea dogs and shared experiences of our sail down. With three Overlord skippers on board there were lots of good suggestions and advice coming to us, which we are very grateful for. The following day we fitted our sails and made the short passage west to the new marina and small town of Oeiras. It was a real breath of fresh air after the other Portuguese marinas. The manager didn’t seem to be able to do enough ... read more

If my father was alive, he would be sitting at his table right now, studying the tattered world map pinned to the wall. My habit of travel caused him worry as he got older. Ironically, his Mayan journeys were my inspiration. Still, he eagerly read my dispatches. If stylistic flaws follow, it's because my writing coach is no longer looking over my shoulder. Lisbon has a tropical feel that reminds me of Colombo, capital of a former colony. There are palm trees and cooling breezes from the ocean. Men in suits wear no socks. Africans from Angola and Mozambique hawk beaded necklaces. The tiled sidewalks undulate sensuously calling to mind gently rolling seas. The truth is, I hate being a tourist. Three hours is my limit for monuments and museums. I prefer sitting in a cafe, ... read more

The first stop of our trip went off without a hitch. I stepped off the plane in Lisbon after getting up very early, catching the first metro to the airport, and waiting ages in the longest line ever (thanks, EasyJet). Mom was there at the baggage claim in Lisbon waiting for me. Bags, euros, taxi...no problem, and we were at the hostel before lunch time. Our hostel was right in the center of the city center...it doesn't get much more convenient than that! Well, it would have been more convenient if there had been an elevator...but dragging three massive bags plus carry-ons up four flights of stairs is all part of the fun, right? We had a room to ourselves with a very nice shared bathroom and a balcony overlooking Rua dos Correeiros. After determining that ... read more

Hi Everyone, My apologies for the 2+ week hiadus. Turns out keep up with blogs in Europe is harder than expected. Guess it just means we're having a great time. So Amit and I got into Lisbon (from Madrid) rather eary in the morning after a night train. We upgraded to the bed from a train seat and it was well worth it. I think the first thing Amit and I noticed about Lisbon was that it was much smaller than anticipated. Maybe it had to do with the fact that Madrid was our last stop, but the city just seemed small for a capital. Also- there is no such thing as flat ground. The city is filled with peaks and valleys...like on the side of a mountain. Its funny because you think you are right ... read more

So here we are on board the Duomo Queen on the river Duomo, Porto, Portugal at dusk. We are sitting on our little deck looking up and watching all the lights come on lighting up the cathedrals and buildings in the old city. It is very beautiful. There is a mist coming down after a 28 degree day. We arrived here by bus at 4 o’clock this afternoon and unpacked in time for welcome drink and dinner. The staff are lovely and can’t do enough for us. Dinner was 6 courses and beautifully presented. There are still sightseeing trips every day so we will be doing some walking but it won’t be enough to work off the three multi course meals. Haven’t blogged since we got to Lisbon as by the time we arrived two hours ... read more

Friday, April 16 We took the morning bus from Lagos to Lisbon (that's "Lisboa" in Bortugesh). It was still rainy with some stray droplets coming down. Within four hours we went from the very southern-most shore of Portugal to the central region (and capital!). We left our luggage at the train station and then set out to explore the city for the day! That night we were taking a train to Madrid, so we had about 10 hours to kill. We took the metro into what seemed to be a nice area. As we strolled, we got more and more into the historic core of Lisbon, which was so cute! The streets and narrow, winding, and cobbled. And there are yellow trams everywhere that run up and down the hilly roads. The houses were pained ... read more
