I am writing my first blog since 2010, this time on my I-Phone from our B&B in Lisbon! Unfortunately it is pouring rain on the morning of our 35th wedding anniversary (unlike on our wedding day which was sunny and warm). We are headed off to the acquarium since most museums are closed on Mondays. Last night, we found a good seafood place called Marisqueira Do Lis on Av Almirante Reis. We ordered a mixed seafood dish for 1 and shared it. I was surprised that it was served cold, but it was delicious. The frites and salad filled out the meal with a local red wine. Price was moderate. What I enjoyed most was the frenetc activity of the waiters and cooks-- reminded me of a French bistrot. We are finding Portugese people very friendly ... read more

Hi again! So, after this blog we should be all caught up for a while! Yay! Immediately after I dropped Alex and Jenny off at their bus station, I walked down the Guadalquivir River walk to get to the train station to meet my API group as we were off for our API International Excursion to Lisbon, Portugal! Of course I stopped at Starbucks on my way. Normally, spring semester Cádiz and Sevilla students are supposed to go to Morocco for our international excursion, but because of some unrest there and because airlines are cutting down on the amount of flights it became too difficult for them to fly us over there, so they changed us over to Lisbon. I really didn’t mind. Not that Morocco wouldn’t have been really neat, it’s just that my favorite ... read more

Annnnd Im BACK. It is very difficult to update my blog from my phone so I waited for computer access. So, lets see... Paris was wonderful. Alexa is a super mom and Avital is beautiful. We went running almost every day and passed awesome sites and then drank wine and ate cheese and prancedParis as we caught up on life. I then went to Bordeaux where I enjoyed a solo hotel room and some serious Jax time. Bordeaux is BEAUTIFUL but I recommend one know French. Or at least some... I then left Bordeaux to meet Aunt Jeri in Madrid, one of my highlights of the trip, and my transfer train was cancelled in Poitier AKA nowhere France. Thanks to the help of a nice spanish man who spoke french and english, I was informed I ... read more

Hi all, Arriving in Lisbon, I immediately fell in love with the city. The first day, I explored the hilly, tiled town and found that around every corner I found myself smiling. As nigh fell I kept wandering the streets with my camera in hand. It seemed to me that every building was lit, and the town sparkled at night, especially the tiled ground, reflecting the night lights and leading you to the ocean. Each day I would strap on my ankle weights and trek the town. There was a castle to explore, and colourful houses lining the streets that took you up and down, winding through the city. The colour surrounded me and I was filled with energy and intrigue for this city. After a few days of exploring the city, I hopped on a ... read more

When I first decided to plop myself in Lisbon, it was out of indolence. I really didn’t want to visit every Michelin 3-star, so Lisbon was the perfect place-there just weren’t any. I would sit in the pastelarias and drink the tiny cups of motor oil they call coffee. Well after 7 months of research, I realized that scenario wasn’t going to happen. Lisbon is a very large city, 1.2 million people and too vast to conquer on foot (as I did in Amsterdam). Yes, we perched at Hotel Miraparque, centrally located on the Parque Eduardo VII, but the true jewels of Lisbon – Torre de Belem (a fortress on the water, the symbol of Lisbon, where Vasco De Gama left town for India), Christo Rei (Christ with arms open on a mountain overlooking the city), ... read more

SEVILLE --> LISBON (new years eve) Today, we started off with a very very long bus ride across the border of Spain to Portugal. The scenery was much the same - the expansive Spanish country side seemelssly merging into the green sloping hills of Portugal. Though I must say the trees were not arranged in the perfect straight lines like the olive trees around Spain. There was no border security - as per the agreement of the EU nations. But there was a whole expanse of no man's land - complete limbo between Spain and Portugal and just countryside. Probably helps keep a civil and peaceful relationship along the border. In fact, in this limbo was a service station which was still considered Spanish and thus with cheaper fuel prices than Portugal - a station that ... read more

This weekend I went to Fatima and Lisbon with Ally, my friend from IES. Call me a pilgrim because I made a pilgrimmage to Fatima. Portugal was an interesting country to visit and I'm glad I had the opportunity to go there. My trip started in teh usual way: I woke up at 4 A.M. and took public transportation to the Barcelona airport. From Lisbon, Ally and I took a bus to Fatima to see the religious sites. Fatima was unlike any religious place I have visited because it was absolutely massive and the entire town of Fatima revolved around the religious history of the town. The buildings in Fatima were all painted white to resemble Heaven and purity. I haven't been to the Vatican in Rome but I've seen pictures of St. Peter's Square and ... read more

Friday, June 24th, we took a train from Caiscais to Lisbon. We had heard it was easier than driving into the city plus we had free transport with the Lisboa Card (and we were on a mission to get our monies worth). Lisbon is a beautiful city on the coast with a beautiful historic district and contrasting ultra modern district. As we approached we were reminded of our own city by the sea, San Francisco. Especially when we crossed a nearly identical Golden Gate Bridge. The 25 de Abril Bridge built in 1966 (30 years after the GG) is irritatingly similar, painted the same color as the famous San Francisco landmark and built by the American company that built the Bay Bridge (not the GG). Not only did they rip off one of our favorite American ... read more
