The highlight of today was most definitely the lunch down by the marina in Portimao on the boardwalk. There is a row of 8 seafood restaurants on the pier and they all have daily features out front on signboards. Tons of people cruise by trying to choose their lunch spot. Each restaurant has a "front man/woman" out by the signboard to try to convince you to come in and there is also a large cooler with all their fresh daily fish on display. One way to go is simply to pick the fish you want for your meal straight from the cooler and that will be the restaurant you choose! We chose a restaurant half way down for two reasons: they had baby squid as a daily feature and they had another special where for 6 ... read more

Stage One of our Tour de Portugal started off with, big surprise, the flight. That is the Plane part. Nothing to tell there except that I (Lori) was taking Benadryl round the clock to reduce the significant swelling in my left Cankle….not a running injury but a wasp bite that occurred on my porch in Ajax! I think it was a vampire wasp (is that a kind??). That is the Pain part. We all managed to fall asleep on the flight which was amazing (even Nigel)! I may have even fallen asleep still chewing my dinner….not sure. We arrived in Lisbon on schedule at 9:30am and it was a breeze getting to Faro airport in the rental car. At our very first roundabout we went around a few times (just cuz). That is the Automobile part. ... read more

So after that great 1st day in Faro, our holiday went on and the main theme of those 3 days was Chillaxing :D So it means mainly days discovering a new island or beach, enjoying the sun and the ocean and obviously drinking sangria at the same time :) My friend from Ukraine was crazy about Sangria so we tasted the Sangria at each beach and each bar we went to! Red sangria or white sangria we drank them all ;) So but except drinking, we really discovered nice places around Faro. The 1st day we went with the boat to Ilha Deserta. It's an island where a very few people are leaving nowadays and where there is only one restaurant! For this, the restaurant is really nice but expensive. When there is no competition why ... read more

I spent a few days around Faro in Algarve and I had a great time there. As most of trips, I did Couchsurfing there. On the 1st night when I arrived my host took me to have a drink in a nice bar in the center. Going there, he showed me around his city. It seems a small but nice city. And there I could taste Portuguese wine for the 1st time I think! Indeed, as French, I am more used to drink French wine, but Portuguese wine is also really tasty. My host told me about a special kind of wine in Portugal: green wine. It should be good, I was looking forward to tasting it and I could do it on the 2nd day :) At the bar, we met some of his friends ... read more

We made our way nearer to the coast and the sunshine, trying to find a campsite NEAR to the beach was a little more difficult than expected, this is Portugal so you would expect some but only 2 could we find. The decision was made to head down the coast and carry on if the description of ‘on the beach’ was inaccurate. An easy journey and as we made our way through the little streets of Fuzeta we arrived at the Camping Fuzeta. Woolly says – Georgie would have liked it here, the pitches are all flat and hard, very very hard as Ian found out when putting the tent pegs in. While Ian was hammering away Jo and I checked out the facilities, basic and pretty clean but not many of them for the number ... read more

Faro is a typical town of the south of Europe. A lot of buildings are white, with cobblestone streets. The center is really lovely, a lot of shops, but the way the marketplace is turn, it's really enjoyable in walk in! You arrive to the marina, a large place, with storks which build their nests on street lamp or buildings, Then, you have the historical center, surrounded by high ramparts. Inside you have a lot of old white buildings, it's gorgeous, but unfortunately it's not maintained at all...Some buildings are in poor conditions... But when you arrive to the main place, it's wonderful, with a lot of orange trees and it's very clean. You have several statues, and the main building, a church that you can visit, with the bones chapels behind who were build with the ... read more

Up sticks again and headed for Cadiz. On the way decided that we were enjoying being on the road again so much that we would try and make Faro in Portugal. Had a good run through, some beautiful scenery and some boring flat land and arrived at the town of Fusal at about 2.30pm. Chose a site, met the local Brits and had a short walk along the quayside. The site is right in the middle of the town, on the quayside, lots to see & do. Mon 27th Dec Walk into town first thing, did some food shopping & found a pharmacy. Had a look at the local church and then returned to the van & mage lunch, burger & chips. Read my book for a while, had a doze & then walked out right ... read more

Yeah after 4 days of torrential rain it finally stopped which means it felt like we saw nothing at all of Lisbon, It gave us the impression that Lisbon was a horrible city. In continuing rain we checked out of the revolting hostel we were in which smelt of wet dog and who knows what else and went to a 2 star hotel which felt like real luxury. From there we were able to explore a 7 floor department store called Cortez Ingles where we went to the movies and saw “Life as we know it”. In Portugal the movies are’nt dubbed so they are all in English with Portugese sub titles. The movie provided light and comic entertainment and got us out of our room which was just what we needed. Next morning with the ... read more
