I got up early to catch the morning train to Lagos, near the southwestern tip of Portugal. I took the metro to the stop closest to the station, which turned out to be a few blocks away. I made it to the station just as the train was arriving, so I didn't have time to make a reservation. The train wasn't too full though, so I didn't have trouble finding a free seat, but reservations are compulsory in Portugal so I wasn't sure what would happen. When the conductor arrived, he looked at the rail pass and then asked for the reservation (in english, thankfully). I told him I didn't have one, and so he just charged me the normal 4€ reservation fee. So, as it turns out I really didn't have anything to worry about. ... read more

This is day 4 of my little sejour in Portugal so here´s the story so far... Left home at 3am on Thursday morning (after having had a lovely dinner for my Grandad at a pub in Meopham the night before). Drove to Luton airport - had plenty of time and only a momentary panic that I wouldmn´t make it when the M25 got closed ahead of me because of an accident and I was stuck still for 40 minutes. All ok though and got to Luton Airparks well on time. Shuttle bus took me to the airport where I checked in straight away and got a Boots mealdeal (of course!). Got on the plane, which was delayed on the runway for an hour, but eventually got to Faro. Warm but overcast. Took a bus to the ... read more

hi everyoneeeee!!!!!! sorry we haven't been writing alot. the past few days were pretty hectic but here we are in .. .. southern portugal! so PORTO was just amazing. We spent the day visiting wine cellers and doing port tastings. (mann we're doing alot of "tastings" here eh .. lol) it was really fun! we took many pictures that we'll load up asap. The port in the city of Porto was gorgeous ... with the water and the boats.. just beautiful. Porto is in northern portugal and we took the train from there to ALBUFEIRA ... in the south of portugal! so basically it took as long as ottawa-toronto takes by car to get from one point of the COUNTRY to the other! and thats where we are now. ALBUFEIRA is absolutely gorgeous! the place we're ... read more

Next stop on our farewell to Europe tour was a nice, relaxing holiday on the Algarve. Being half-Portuguese and having my dad there certainly helped us discover all the local gems. We basically spent the week being fattened up. The food was amazing, especially the sardines! I managed to eat 18 large sardines in one sitting, much to the delight of the owners/chefs. Sy (my dad) was the perfect host: arranging for us to have a great 1-bedroom apartment in the Praia da Rocha then stocking up the fridge with lots of Portuguese cuisine to eat, despite keeping us so busy we hardly had time to eat there! His itinerary included taking in most of the towns in the area: Portimao, Albufeira, Vilamoura, Quarteira. A highlight was the amazing rock formations at Praia do Vau, where ... read more

How many countries can I go to while in Spain? I selfishly wanted to add another country to my list so I went to Portugal for two days. I took the bus to Faro and had a day at the beach and then wandered around the town. There wasn’t much to see so I enjoyed the tranquil little town and the fact that there wasn’t a pressure to see all the sights. I have Semana Santa off from school which is the celebration of Holy week. During the week there are 50-60 different processions in Seville. The routes symbolize the journey made by Jesus to his crucifixion. The “pasos” or floats are decorated with the Virgin Mary or Jesus. Due to the Catholic influence, most of the floats focus on Mary. The believers here in Seville ... read more
