August 5, 2005 - August 8, 2005 Wow, what an adventure Krakow turned out being. From beginning to end, nothing ever really went at a comfortable pace. From the train ride in, to the weather, the nights out at the local clubs, our side trips to Auschwitz and the Wieliczka Salt Mine; nothing really went according to plan. Surprisingly, the added ingredient of chaos really spiced up the visit and helped to make some unforgettable memories. The overnight train ride from Prague was miserable. Keith and I had really hoped to squeeze in some sleep along the way, but the travel conditions severely prevented us from sleeping. In the beginning, things went very well. We spent the first several hours sharing stories with a couple from England who shared our cabin with us. Eventually the conversations ... read more

Hi guys, Poland has proved to be a really great place, Theres a lot to do here. Yesterday I went to this really crazy rock quarry to go swimming. I think that I am going to stay here in Krakow until saturday. So after hearing so many bad things about Warsaw on my way down I went into it thinking that i was going to have a really bad time. I actually liked Warsaw. The city is very different then the other ones that I was in. THe city reminds me a lot of San Diego because the roads are really long and in block form. The old town was nice too. So for people who say that Warsaw sucks, I beg to differ. Krakow has been a really cool place. Staying at this hostel where ... read more

July 30 - August 3 Krakow, Poland Janexim Guesthouse Hey Everyone! Hope all is going good at home, we need some updates soon to see what everyone is up to. Anyways, we are just getting ready to leave Krakow tomorrow on the early train at 6:10 am and travelling about 12-13 hours to Munich, Germany and will arrive at 8:30 pm. Our original plan was to go to Venice for 4 days but we had trouble booking and finding a room, its super expensive and we're kind of getting sick of all these people! So, now we are stopping in Munich for 2 nights and then we have 4 nights in Interlaken, Switzerland which is a town of about 20,000 people in the middle of the Swiss Alps (we're thinking its going to be very relaxing ... read more

Hiya! I'm writing this entry from Krakow, an absolutely beautiful city in Poland. We have done so much since my last post, which wasn't too long ago so I'm not sure where to begin. We flew from Amsterdam to Berlin. Berlin was such a cool city. Our first day there we took an all day walking tour which was pretty much a 9 hour history lesson and saw most major sites of the city. Our guide was really great and my brain actually hurt when we were done from taking in so much info. The city is very interesting because it's stilll changing so much. I've never seen so much scaffolding and construction sites anywhere in my life. Seeing the buildings with bullet holes just covering the entire thing, and learning about which buildings were even ... read more

Hello People!!! We are now in Poland at grannys place and are having fun! Lithuania was good, allthough the weather was bad:( Its been raining almost all the time! Lithuanian people are nice, allthough according to Marta a little bit boring. Lina thinks they are ok. Marta makes jokes all the time but nobody understands them. Horrible. Marta was a freak in Lithuania. People just stared at her all the time and asked Lina were she was from and where she had found her!!!! Incredible. Marta felt like zoo animal. In Poland are stay is completely planned out by relatives. They have "activities" planned for every day thus altering our own plans completely, but its all good. Going to party in warsaw tomorrow and hopefully have a lot of fun. Lina is not so much in ... read more

With all southern-bound trains booked solid, I am “stuck” in Kraków for a day-and-a-half. There is only one train a day headed for Hungary, and mostly foreigners compete for couchettes and beds, destined for the most predictable of destinations: Budapest, Prague, and Bratislava. At this point, I have little intention of spending time in any of these cities. So, having already given Kraków three plus days over a week ago, I wander idly through the Stare Miasto, with no real goal in mind. I fight the thought that I am wasting a day here because I truly wish to be elsewhere. I have details to attend to except to change over a few dollars, get a train reservation and a couchette, and revel in my favorite activity while in Kraków…lunch right before a delightful nap. As ... read more

The Polish thankfully do not pay tribute to their dogs as members of their families, much like the French. At the same time, canines are, by and large, healthy creatures in Poland, though a bit aggressive if you approach a home without letting them check you out. Many homes have “Beware of Dog” signs posted in their driveways. Though, I often wonder if this is a security measure; no dog appears to be around, and there is no sign one was ever there. Mysteriously, they come in two types: miniscule, or gigantic. The happy medium of a golden retriever, for example, just isn’t part of the landscape. On the one hand, Poles walk around with essentially no more than gerbils on a leash, the kind an irritable man gives a good kick to after a bad ... read more

I was in Krakow, Poland for the usual 3 day visit and I didn't lose anything. Again, there were a lot of tourists but the city is amazing, not as big as Prague but that's good for getting around. I stayed in a hostel on the old town square which is one of the biggest in Europe (the square, not the hostel). It was a great location because I could sit in the window and just watch all the activity in the square. It was a little more difficult for me because there's not a lot of English spoken, even in the train station but I managed somehow. Unfortunately, the Polish lesson I received from Pola wasn't enough to get by :) I spent one day visiting the 700+ year-old salt mines in the nearby town ... read more

Poor Adam, with whom I have shared a compartment on the ride from Kraków, is still hung over from a night out with a few Scots. He has slept just about the entire way, having decided to forego a night’s sleep at his hotel and head for the station for the 6:20 a.m. departure directly from the nightclub. Adam, who is from Bath, England, is in town for private Polish lessons. He is among the very few foreigners in Lublin. What an adjustment this is from the international flavor of Kraków. The largest city in Eastern Poland, Lublin’s perimeter does not impress; it is an ordinary mix of mediocre apartment buildings in shabby neighborhoods and abandoned warehouses. The center of town is much more eye-catching. It has a bustling commercial zone of large businesses, hotels, banks, ... read more
