7 DE ABRIL DE 2002 Después de semanas de frío, en España empezaba a entrar la primavera cuando nos fuimos a Berlín a padecer temperaturas promedio de 8 grados en pleno abril. Nos gusta la mala vida: un fin de semana se anunciaba una subida a 17 grados, pero se nos ocurrió ir a visitar Varsovia, donde estaba nevando... ...La antigua Warszawa es la capital de un país muy sufrido. La guía dice que algo raro debe tener Polonia que todo el mundo le arrebata las fronteras: suecos, rusos, prusianos/alemanes, húngaros y austriacos. Demasiados vecinos poderosos y expansionistas. En particular, le tienen tirria a Rusia y Alemania. It was an early up and about at 5.30am on the Swedish ferry for another hot shower and to watch the boat approach the Polish coast at Swinoujscie. It was a smooth crossing, and we had quite adequate sleep inside the van. Customs were pretty prompt, and we even managed to persuade the young Orbis lady to give us the student exchange of $4/day required spending instead of the standard $10/day, so we were off and running before 8am. The drive through the Polish countryside was along poorly sealed roads, especially near built up areas, where the cobbled roads really shook up the van. Given the potential border delays, we took an early 6am start from the Minsk campsite with a view to beating the Excelsior bus to the border, which we successfully did. We reached Brest around 11am after a good ride in very overcast weather. A very modern Customs building housed us for coffee while the Russian immigration took a mere 1 hour to allow us to depart the glorious Soviet Republic. While it was a sad farewell to Nina, for many on the bus (but not for me) it was a fond farewell to the Soviet Union. We only lost an hour also with Polish customs, which were also less stringent than we had anticipated.
