Today is the one day when I have come to appreciate the kindness of others, no matter how bizarre the situation. Before heading out for a final stroll about the Kazimierz, I grabbed my towel for a quick shower, soon to be on my way for a quiet evening without too much hassle. The bathroom is a windowless, narrow chamber with a ceramic tub and toilet; there is very little room to maneuver. The only door in and out has no window. The door is of solid wood and very heavy. Everything took its normal course: turn faucet on, get wet, apply soap, rinse, shave, etc. Nothing major to report. However, events took a sharp turn for the worse after my shower when I turned the door handle, only to realize that the lock malfunctioned; the ... read more

Poland’s premier urban attraction, Kraków’s beauty and style live up to its reputation. I dare say, with reluctance, after having come from Lviv that it is anti-climatic, almost a disappointment. Only here a day now, I can assure you Kraków is a marvelous place: modern, vibrant, and aesthetically pleasing. Poles are overtly proud of their city, as well they should be. Yet, having arrived from Lviv, I cannot help but feel that John Paul II’s hometown (his image is all over the place) is but a playground for the armies of visitors it hosts from around the world. Where Lviv is yesterday, or many years ago, Kraków makes it absolutely clear it has both feet planted in 2005, and looks in no direction but forward. I awoke this morning to what must have been the most brilliant day of the year, if not the decade. The sun shone bright; it was warm and breezy and floral perfume floated in the air. What a great day, the kind of day you remember come winter. However, with train ticket in hand for Oświęcim, is there ever a fine day to go to Auschwitz? Do you roll out of bed look outside and say, “Gee, this would be a splendid day to see the camps, so much better than yesterday?” But, what of people who live in Oświęcim? They must travel a bit and see the world, right? The remnants of the camps must be but a minor distraction for them, as they lead normal existences; they go to work, have families, and root ... read more

Djen Dobri from Polska!! Although I said that the Czech Republic was my favorite country of the trip so far, it has been far surpassed by Poland, but who knows, maybe every new country we cycle into will be better then the last? Slovakia will have a lot to live up to... But enough about Poland for now, this blog must start where the last one finished, in Praha. After an annoying and expensive afternoon on computers doing the last blog and making a mess of downloading photos form the camera on a Czech language PC (we succeeded in copying the files but corrupted our memory card in the process - now sorted thankfully - but the CD with the files on it has a habit of crashing any PC you put it into!!) we spent ... read more

At last in the train on my way to Warsaw. I have had a full day in Berlin and find myself thoroughly exhausted. I have been going round Berlin all day, doing all the touristy things but achieved what I wanted to achieve: I walked from the Alexanderplatz away from my communist past down Unter den Linden to the Branderburger Tor - what a great reconstruction - waved hello to the French and British embassies on either side (the French is of course better) and then got thrown out of the hotel Adlon, as I did not quite look suitable. I take offense that my nice Cambodian straw hat does not look suitable. I then went to shed a tear at the Soviet monument, stood in awe at the new European quarters in Berlin and then ... read more

I'm not sure why I keep doing blogs right after I step off overnight trains, but here's my best attempt at summarizing the week's adventures, anyway. Enjoy! Budapest was freaking great. We ended up spending 8 days there, earning us free tshirts from our hostel and respect from all. We hung out with the most amaaazing people, some of whom will now be joining us for our weeklong vacation from backpacking in our timeshare in Austria... fast approaching, actually. Anyway, we somehow managed to stay for our first four days without even entering Pest (the modern, hep part of town) which I think may be some sort of record. After the marzipan extravaganza of the last blog, we went to these lush Turkish baths and just sort of wallowed in our own sloth (that expression looks ... read more

Sunday 15 May We decided to travel back to Kraków because of the damp weather and poor forecast for the mountain reigons. We went to the swimming pool, included in the £9 price per person for a room at Bystre. There was no one about as we entered the labyrinthine building, so we had the pool to ourselves. Afterwards we had a meal in the restaurant which had a cavernous feel to it as the conference groups had gone, and the bar and restaurant resounded to 80s hits (I reckon it went with the décor!). Then the transport fun started. It was three hours on the bus from Bystre to Rzeszów via Lesko, and despite having a quicker bus to Rzeszów, we missed the fast train back to Kraków. Fortunately we were in time for the ... read more

13 May Conference on Bieszczady Narrow Gauge We did our presentation during the morning, and there were also presentation by the Bieszczady Narrow Gauge Foundation and the Pioneer’s Railway from Košice, Slovakia. We heard from the Director of Slovak Railways that they were somewhat miffed about the cessation of services along the line from Poland via Łupków 14 May We had a special train arranged on the Bieszczady Narrow Gauge line from Cisna to Wola Michowa. We got a lift to Cisna from our hotel in Bystre, and after a quick tour around the station and museum at Majdan, our train set off into the wilds. The section westwards to Balnica, on the border with Slovakia, is truly wild, with even the forest tracks disappearing in one section, just forest and mountains. The forest is almost ... read more

The Bieszczady Mountains are at the far south east corner of Poland bordering Slovakia and Ukraine. Home to rich wildlife suchas wolves and bears, the Bieszczady National Park has been declared a UNESCO bisophere reserve. It's also the kind of place where people drop out: Komańcza's parish (for want of a better description) has one the highest number of PhDs in the country! Travelling to the Bieszczady Mountains - off Season - that is a challenge because public transport is seen as out of fashion in provincial Poland. Nobody wants to fund it. Even German Railway’s online European timetable can’t keep up with the (usually negative) changes. So, if you are travelling off season to the Bieszczady here’s how to do it: High summer is ok: there is a direct train from Kraków to the Bieszczady ... read more

After a visit to café Larousse, our day was broken with a lengthy trip to a bank of the edge of town, just to close an account that I had held - banking moves slowly still in Poland and you get charged for the privilege of keeping your money there. We had some fun riding out on the tram, walking over a bridge and down, catching the wrong bus to take us back past the tram stop and beyond! I think I turned the air blue at that point. Then we made a nostalgic trip through Podgórze, out the south bank of the river before heading in to town again. We walked along ul. Zamojskiego where we used to live before going round Podgórze park. Our old local cinema, the "Wrzos" cinema, had some good stuff ... read more
