Who knew that Poland is world class in windsurfing? I spent the afternoon in the sun. I was suppose to bicycle to Hel (google 'Hel, Poland") and I tried for awhile. But it was more enjoyable sitting in the sun watching the surfers go by.... read more

I am staying with Servas friends, Ewa and Bogumil, in Gdynia. This morning Bogumil dropped Ewa and I off at Sepot, a Victorian beach town, so that we could walk along the beach back to Gdynia. I think we walked over 10 kms along the Baltic Sea. It is really warm here, plus sixteen in the afternoons. The beaches were relatively empty. Sepot reminded me of Brighton, but much more toned down. The pier was empty and calm, though Ewa told me that it has games and rides during the summer holidays. The best thing about Ewa and Boumil's house is the pets, three dogs and cats; reminds me of home. It was great walking the dogs in the park yesterday. A couple more days in this area and I will head for Warsaw. The weather ... read more

Tah Dah! One taxi, plane, taxi, bus, bus, and I'm here in Gdansk; registered in hostel and spent afternoon 'downtown'. Great weather so far! Getting use to the silence of one who does not speak the language. Enough people in service sector speak English to point me in general direction. It was a good trip despite the early morning, 4:15 a.m. to get flight. Can't complain as the ticket was ten dollars Canadian, no taxes, but with the extras for luggage it was fifty dollars total. If anyone follows my tracks, I recommend the Lucky Hostel in Gdansk. They will pick you up at the trainstation free of charge, and a single room with breakfast is 26 Can dollars. Rooms are tiny, but when you just want to crash, they are fine. Very clean place with ... read more

7 Days In Gdansk June/July 2008 Back in 2005, myself, Rob Heyes, Michael Hodgson, David Jeffries and John Yates began a tradition; the exploration of European cities. Trips prior to 2008 may be a little too old to retrospectively blog, so I’m going to concentrate on 2008’s trip to Gdansk. Earlier in the year, the 5 of us had decided to do something over summer. As usual, commitments at home prevented the prospect of a lengthy trip and so we scoured skyscanner.com for cheap flights. Gdansk was the absolute cheapest, and having visited Poland 4 times already I thought it may be a good choice. Gdansk lies in the north of Poland, on the southern edge of Gdansk Bay, looking out towards the Baltic Sea. The 5 of us found ourselves in a British owned apartment, ... read more

For all the cosmopolitan charm of its new town, the northern Polish city of Gdansk's real history lies within its hulking, dilapidated shipyards. From within this run down background, many believe the first nail was driven into the coffin of communism in Europe. The workers spoke out for the Polish population and former the largest trade union in the world to show their puppet government that they were no longer prepared to accept the Soviet Union pulling the strings. Now pay attention at the back there. The first rumblings occurred two weeks before Christmas 1970. Obscene food price hikes caused workers in Gdansk and nearby Gdynia, along with several other cities in Poland, to rise up in angry protest. The militia were criminally heavy-handed in dealing with the demonstrations, and 45 people were killed. After a ... read more

We headed for the beach of Poland, Sopot!!! I am from Wrightsville Beach and during the summer time it can be as hot as 100 degrees and sunny and the water is in the 80's but in Sopot it was 60 degrees and the water was around freezing, that is what it felt like. We spent our time walking around when the weather allowed and spent then rest of the time in the hotel having some good family time playing cards and watching the Olympics. Sopot is really the beach resort for Poland, there was a lot of construction going on but it was still very nice for Poland. The Sopot pier is the longest wooden pier in Europe and we walked on it is a gale! just east of Sopot is Gdansk where the Solidaridy ... read more

Getting computer time here has been really hard. In the dorms there are only two computer to 120 students and staff. Plus these computers are circa 1990 running Window's 98. They're a nightmare. So I finally got a chance to use the good computers in the computer lab again. This camp has been a blur. There are only three more days that students will be here. I still can't believe that it has gone by so fast and that we have fit so much in. Since my last update, we have been on a whole bunch of different tours. The coolest one was probably the trip to Malbork. Malbork is the largest castle in Europe built in the 1300's. Near the end of WWII, it was pretty much destroyed by Russian soldiers trying to take over ... read more

The little white beast……… So I could either sit on my butt (dupa) for 1 week or see as much as I can before Russia. So what the heck?! I rented a car, my little white Fiat. Thank god for my few experiences driving in Poland already, because I don't know if I would've had the confidence or I would have had at least more stress and problems on the road. I won't lie, I did feel very nervous at the start and the first 5 mins I stalled a couple fo times and yes in the middle of an intersection! And i was beeped at alot, but you should see me now! Just one of the Poles, I like the way they drive, very similar to me. I had researched my trip heavily, armed with ... read more

The Tri Cities - Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot I travelled from the farm in Mazuria on Sunday 22nd of June. About a 5 hour trip with a nasty vodka hangover from the night before at the tacky disco with the sleazy manager, giving me lots of vodka shots. Needless to say I spent most of the trip sleeping and drinking water! Initially I had planned on staying in Gdansk, though I had no accomodation booked. But when i arrived I decided I wanted to stay in Sopot, which is a beach town, though alot smaller. What a great decision! After walking around for a while with all my luggage and also my hangover I found a room. People advertised vacant rooms in private houses in they're windows. A nice small room and this way I can ... read more
