Close to Katy, 05-07-2001. It is close to 04.00 O'clock in the morning before I see divine light, before I see the hopelessness of being lazy, too lazy to leave the cozy comfort of my muffty old sleeping bag that has followed me on so many trips but seems to be unable to help me out, to protect me against that determined clan of mozzies so keen on my Dutch blood. Olds age and many trips have left their tracks on my nighttime partner, small worn-out patches and down right small holes big enough for small mozzie bodies. I will have to get up and pitch my tent instead of spending the night under this star lit heaven that feels somehow comfortable if it wasn't for the bloodsuck clan outside. Not that I can blame my ... read more

Gdansk, Poland - June 15th, 2009 We arrived in Gdansk after a 6 hour train ride from Szczeczin. As usual, we were greeted by heavy rain, and of course, we did not have a hostel reserved. So we set out on a mission to find some lodging. Easier said then done. A lot of the hostels were booked solid because it was a holiday. After wandering around for several hours in the rain we managed to find of all places, a barge on the river which was converted into a hostel. The place was decent, even though the room was about 10'x6', with two bunk beds, which looked more like shelves then actual beds. It was so small that Dan could not even stretch out on the bed, as his feet and head would hit the ... read more

When we arrived in Gdynia, it was raining heavyly. When I decided to take Ania with me, I made a point to show her how european young people travel. Keeping to this promise, instead of taking a taxi to the centre we walked to the bus stop in the rain, when with a norvegian guy took the city bus to Gdynia train station and later train to Gdansk main station. I don't have to mention that we were the only ones from the whole ferry to do that. In the beginning of the day it rained, despite of this we left luggage, and went to the old town. It was relatively cold but it got better and at the end we saw even sun. Gdansk is one of the oldest city in Poland and one of ... read more

In the past, the park’s area was a Baltic Sea bay. The sea’s activity, however, created sand dunes which in the course of time separated the bay from the Baltic Sea. As waves and wind carry sand inland the dunes slowly move, at a speed of 3 to 10 meters per year. Some dunes are quite high - up to 30 meters. The highest peak of the Park - Rowokol (115 meters above sea level) - is also an excellent observation point. The "moving dunes" are regarded as a curiosity of nature on a European scale.... read more

The Castle in Malbork was built in Prussia by the Teutonic Order as an Ordensburg. The Order named it Marienburg, literally "Mary's Castle". The town which grew around it was also named Marienburg, but since 1945 it is again, after 173 years, part of Poland and known as Malbork. The castle is a classic example of a medieval fortress, and is the world’s largest brick gothic castle. UNESCO listed the castle and its museum as World Heritage Sites in December 1997 as Castle of the Teutonic Order in Malbork. It is one of two World Heritage Sites in the region with origins in the Teutonic Order. ... read more

"One more time, how do you say Pleased to meet you?" I asked Michał as we got off the plane and walked across the wet runway in Gdansk. I wanted to make a good first impression on his Mum. Plus, she didn't speak English anyway, so I figured I should make the effort. Michał gave me a disappointed look I was quite familiar with. I'd last seen it a few hours before when I told him I'd dropped my boarding pass on the way to the airport. 'Miło mi Panią poznać' he responded, wearily. You think that looks hard to pronounce?? Imagine hearing it. See that first word? That says Meewo. Apparently if you put a cross through an L it becomes a W. Fair enough... So Michał is really mee-how. I won't even go into ... read more
