The UK had more bank holidays in a row that most people knew what to do with! However, we decided it would be a perfect excuse to get a little off the tourist map and see the rather different sights and sounds of Eastern Europe.... We arrived into Gdansk, and after getting somewhat interrogated at immigration, I managed to get into the country – fourth in the queue and yet the last person in the whole plane to enter!? Pretty sure I don’t fit the classic terrorist profile? We didn’t really know how we were going to get to our hostel – not even sure if the buses were still running, but then an Australian accent pierced through the silence and convinced us it would be cheapest for all of us to get a taxi into ... read more

In Chojnice I met with Michał, my close friend from the former martial arts club. We practiced together and we drank much beer together. :-) Nowadays we could met and see each other what realle changed in our life. In Michał's life plenty things were changed, in mine maybe not so much. During this visit Michał led me through the town and even we undertook short excursion to Charzykowskie Lake. There is a well known resort in Poland, I heard before some positive opinion. Chojnice is just common town, not so excited but not boring. We found nice restaurant and had lunch, traditional Polish dish tasted me very much. I bought red teas there and I was a bit surprised we found tea shop. I'm drinking those teas from Chojnice in job. What else? I promised ... read more

Afterwards I spent holiday together with Ania and Robert I decided to spend little time alone :-) I desired to visit my two friends whose live in Pomerania in north Poland, they invited too. Tomek lives in Gdańsk and Michał in Chojnice. I arrived at the morning of Wednesday 22th of September to Gdynia, a harbour in east part of Polish coast. Because I had a big advance - spare time before I met with Tomek - and I made up mind to see ORP Błyskawica in Gdynia. Nowadays ORP Błyskawica (Polish word "błyskawica" means lightning in English) is the oldest preserved destroyer in whole of the world. She was constructed in Cowes's shipyard (Isle of Wight - southern England) in 1936, in the next year she entried into the service in Polish Navy shortly before ... read more

I travelled to Gdańsk in SKM train, very fast. I had one stop in Sopot - I got off the train overthere because I wanted to go to Sopot's pier. This short excursion took just one hour. To Gdańsk I got about 5pm and I gave a bell to Tomek to let him know I'm already here. He replied me we could meet up aside of Monument Defenders of Polish Post in Gdańsk. Until this time I found a cheap hotel in Wałowa street - just for about 40 złoty (10 euro) per night. We sat in beer garden nearby Wyspa Spichrzów and made the orders. We were talking couple of hours because we hadn't seen each other from at least 4 years, even 5 five. We had plenty topics to talk especially reagarding current economical ... read more

This trip marks the first time I've done an entire vacation abroad entirely by myself. On past trips I've always either taken someone with me, or planned to meet with people I knew in at least a few destination cities, or both. I've visited individual cities solo, but only for a few days or a week at a time. I've found that meeting locals and seeing their cities and regions through their eyes has consistently led to my best experiences traveling. This is exactly what Saint Rick means when he says you must become a "temporary local" - but he's an extrovert and his "jump right in, don't worry how you look" methods just aren't what I'm ever going to do. That meant I needed to think about what I could do. And you know what ... read more

I'm trying to keep clam and remember that it always takes time for me to orient to a new language and a new phrasebook. In 2005, I suffered through many very sad attempts at Czech and it took until several days in to a second visit in 2008 for me to render one word, any word in a way that any Czech person was willing to recognize as Czech. It was a triumph when it happened. Let's just say I haven't triumphed in Polish yet and things aren't looking good for this visit. So yesterday, Saturday, I had a leisurely morning at the mall, magic ruby Merrells and all that, and was basking in just experiencing Gdańsk and trying to see examples of everyday life in the city. In the afternoon, I met Aga and got ... read more

The unthinkable has happened - I'm too tired to blog. AGAIN. I know, right? WTF is up with wearing self out on the actual vacation instead of saving some energy for the Internet?? Fortunately for my loyal readers, the neighbors in this guest house just got in and are a bit noisy... Friday night, arrived in Gdańsk, Poland, after about an hour's delay leaving Reykjavík on Iceland Express. (No one could have predicted that a product called "IE" might have quality and reliability problems...) As many of you had already heard me relate many times, Iceland Express flight 267 direct from Reykjavík to Gdańsk operates only on Fridays. In the summer. Of which August 27 was the very last instance for all of 2010. So many ways to go horribly wrong! I may perhaps regale everyone ... read more

... and other pointless Solidarity puns Everyone, even the locals here that I've met, wants to know how on earth I came to be traveling to these places where American tourists just aren't common. I tell them this story: growing up in the 1970s and 80s, in a world dominated by the Cold War and threat of nuclear annihilation, the thing for an idealistic young liberal to do was to work for peace and understanding with the people of the Soviet Union and the Eastern bloc. I was a poor kid, so travel wasn't an option, but my high school (utterly improbably) offered me the opportunity to study Russian language, which in 1988 I jumped at. I wanted to change the world. Unfortunately for me, the world wasn't waiting - and in 1989 it went and ... read more

The morning we docked at Gdynia was a bit murky, it was still warm, but the skies were grey and ominous, as was our lack of adequate wet weather gear... hmm fingers crossed. We disembarked at the portside town of Gdynia and then took a bus to the town of Gdansk. We didn't really see much of Gdynia as we drove through it - to be honest it was just a modern (last 15-20years it has more-or-less popped up) clean town that could be just about anywhere. We did pass a lovely church on the way that claims to have the largest pipe organ in Europe... man if I had a penny for every time we heard that! (Actually I’d have about 12p... but still!) When we neared the popular Polish holiday town of Gdansk the ... read more
