... read more

... read more

When you check into your hostel and meet your fellow travellers, there are the usual conversation starters such as - name, country of origin, where have you been, how long been travelling for, etc etc etc. For something different, some random dude (from Melbourne of all places) told me that if I smelled something funny it was likely to be the new shampoo he was using as he had contracted some fungus infection. Whoaaa man, too much information; I was totally speechless. Anyway, onto the blog. Left lovely Krakow and headed to Warsaw for a day. A lot of Poles I've met do not rate their capital at all and told me to bypass it. I figured it couldn't be that bad. Now I have visited it, I have to agree with their observation. Only highlight ... read more

Lindsay came and invited me for a nightcap in the pub downstairs. When I got there, they were sitting at a table, drinks half gone, and looking rather tired. The only other people in the room were the bartender and an Asian customer sitting at the bar, staring intently at the World Cup match on the TV. I wouldn’t normally have thought much about him, but he was wearing a Korean flag as a cape, and that caught my attention. We sat at our table talking until the adults excused themselves, and headed upstairs. I then pardoned myself and hit the toaletska, and Lindsay moved our empties to the bar, and, sitting, ordered another round. When I came out she introduced me to the Korean fan, Allen. No kidding, he’d spent some time in Boston, liked ... read more

The title of this journal is in honor of Tomek. When we arrived in Gdansk, the Dizzy Daisy Hostel was full, but they directed us to another one, the Baltic Hostel, which was "3 minutes away from the train station." That was their motto on the brochure. Well, the directions were really bad and we wandered into what seemed like the Polish projects- tough guys sitting on porches, either pointing in a helpful manner, but still unwelcomely, the proper direction. When we finally came there, our friend Tomek, a pot-bellied middle aged Pole, showed us around. I think he was slightly drunk, this was about 9:00. Our tour was like this: (In Polish accent) Here is shower. Man... Woman... No Problem... (wink) Here is toilet. Here is toilet. Here is room. Man, here. You, here. This- ... read more

Well here we are for the second day in Gdańsk and its quite a nice place. Reminds me slightly of Provincetown, but not really at all lol Yesterday morning we packed all of our stuff and headed to the trainstation around 11am. We managed to buy tickets for the 11:50 train which was a pretty sweet deal. We couldn't figure out what the ticket said and had no idea where our platform was but we managed to get on board before it left. Stepping into our compartent it smelled like kiełbasa, and there was a family of 4 (one of the ugliest i've seen in my life) getting ready to eat what looked like take-out kebabs. For the next almost five hours we put up with the obnoxious little brat of a daughter as well as ... read more

Lindsay came and made sure I was awake at three, bright eyed and bushy-tailed. I mumbled I’d meet her in the lobby in 30 minutes, and I managed to do it too! We bid her father goodbye, and with much thanks, we departed by cab to Gdansk Airport. Traveler’s note: Wizzair is nice and all, but they have a real issue on landings. Don’t get me wrong, they stick them, but maybe a little less gravity, little more flaps, that’s all I’m saying. So after a rather hard landing in Luton, and extricating the seat cushion from my dupa, we collect our luggage and head to the train to Gatwick and a 5 hour layover made longer by a three hour delay. From the outset we knew we’d be traveling for about 24 hours, now 27. ... read more

I got another good night’s sleep, this is becoming a habit! And to think, it only took me 8 days to get over my jetlag! Ironically, I slept through breakfast at this new, swank hotel, so I venture across the green park, to the symbol everyone in the world knows instantly. The Golden Arches, gleaming under the Sopot sun. Now, I’ve been in a few Mickey D’s, but this was the cleanest, most well organized and well run I have ever seen. It is what other McDonald’s aspire to be. Outside, in the park, is a covered picnic spot to enjoy the otherwise unremarkable food. I kill the next couple hours by reading, writing, and last minute shopping with Lindsay, before donning my suit and heading to Gdansk for the wedding. The ceremony is being held ... read more
