Sometimes a story or a travel is best told in pictures. This is that kind of a story. This is the story of a place where I often travel for visiting friends and relatives. This place is a small community that lives mostly of agriculture as live stock and fishing. A place were you can find peace just by enjoying the beauty of your surroundings. A place were you can find beauty in every kind of weather and time of year. The place is Bø i Vesterålen. Its a small place 1 hour and 30 min drive from the city Harstad and 30 min drive from the city Sortland. This is the perfect place to travel if you enjoy being out in the nature in all its glory by: trekking the mountainsides, boating, cycling from one ... read more

Tuesday 9th September It was always going to be a long day. When I typed in Kristiansand into the TomTom on departing Bergen at 10:15 it reckoned my arrival time would be 19:30. Well cheery. It's only 500km but you have to account for the ferry crossings around Bergen and Stavanger and the fact that there is no Norwegian translation for dual carriageway - let alone Motorway. Still I figured I could beat that geriatric estimate - I think TomTom counts a typical road user as someone on life support on their last journey ever. Well beat it I did, but not massively - I hit Kristiansand at 18:15. Eight hours straight on the bike, save for 2x20 minute ferry crossings and fuel stops I took no breaks. I even maximised my time by eating on ... read more

Monday 8th September One thing about camping is that you end up in bed fairly early and also wake fairly early - so you do maximise your daylight. Walking back from my pizza last night the sky was as clear as and the temperature plummeting accordingly. Not sure what it fell to in the small hours but it was only 6° at 7 am this morning. Autumn was galloping in and I suspect after the autumn solstice winter isn't far behind. Anyway in the wee hours I had to put my hat on in my sleeping bag and the bag was well and truly zipped up, containing me inside a cotton liner and a t-shirt. After that I was warm enough - save having a nose like a labrador that'd been nosing in the freezer for ... read more

Last week we spent an afternoon at the National Gallery of Contemporary Art. It was really nice, took only a few hours to see the current exhibits, which included some interesting stuff. Of course much of it went over my head, being modern art and all. But it was free, which was the important part. :) My most favorite piece was part of a series from an artist who worked as a hotel housekeeper. It wasn't clear whether she had to take that job out of desperation, or if she did it for the sake of art (haha). But anyway, she would basically rifle through the rooms she cleaned and document what she saw. Take pictures. Write a little commentary. It was funny and interesting and perfectly appealed to my nosy side. Which I must say, ... read more

Sunday 7th September True to form I missed a 3 pm ferry from Geiranger by about 15-20 mins so now have a about an hour and a half's wait till the 5 pm one - the last one of the day, so could be worse. So I thought I would start the update for today early. I'm cutting it a bit fine to get across the fjord, find somewhere to camp and get pitched up by dark, but as tempting as it is to camp this side I need to press on. I keep staying extra in places and now that I have booked my ferry to Denmark for Wednesday I have to start working my way south. Hence whilst kicking my heels I am writing blog material for the second time today - although at ... read more

Sadly, I had to leave Fresvik and say goodbye to all the relatives; new found friends; green, green hills; and the fjords. Ingvar so kindly drove me to Vik to catch the bus to Voss. From there I was to take the train to Drammen and then another train to Holmestrand. It was raining in Fresvik but as we left and started to drive along the fjord, the sun came out and it was beautiful shining on the water and the fishing boats. Apparantly, September 1st brings the sardine fishing season. As it turned out, I had to switch buses in Vinje! Well....THAT name sure sounded familiar. When I climbed on the bus, the driver said to me...in Norwegian, of course...that I would have to change at Winyee...at least, that's what it sounded like to me. ... read more

Saturday 6th September Is a Norwegian hangover any worse than a London one? Well frankly when you get the bar bill - yes. At an eye watering £7/pint (well actually less than a pint - 0.4l) getting drunk here was never going to be cheap - and it wasn't. So this morning I have a sore head and an empty wallet. I don't get many hangovers these days, so maybe it is the altitude (about 5000ft), but I feel cack. The driving limit over here is 0.02mg/l which is ¼ of the UK limit. As I finished drinking about 2 am last night (this morning) this is the reason I am lagging behind this morning and updating yesterday's blog. I never made it to Gerainger yesterday. Went for a stunning 4 hour hike in the Jotunheim ... read more

Well, it's been a while since my last entry, but days are getting busier and busier...and also getting shorter and shorter. There's so much that I have done in the last two weeks, but here I'll just concentrate on a few... I started my volunteer placement two weeks ago. I am a teaching assistant at Svarttjern Skole, and other than a few minor hang-ups everything went relatively smoothly. The school is in the neighborhood, Romsås, where there are no vehicles, and all of the paths are for walking. I am working with the 2 trinn classes (second grade). Every Wednesday the class has excursions to various places to get a comprehensive education. Most of the outings are to the local woods where they are encouraged to explore and learn about nature. I was a little ill ... read more
