Danielle's semester has essentially begun, two of her classes (introduction to Norwegian for international students and feminist writers) having started yesterday with the other following next week. I, on the hand, am stuck without school responsibilities for another week and even then I will only have two classes regularly meeting (one of which doesn't convene for the entirety of November). Not sure how I'll keep myself busy in the meantime. Picking berries? Racing stroller-pushing young Oslo parents up and down the trails outside of town? Concocting further situations in which I can embarrass myself in front of the natives? Who knows. The other two classes meet sporadically, one of which I think is largely field-based, perhaps even fjord-based! I'm a bit apprehensive about my science courses, as the classes that I needed to take that were ... read more

We have had a couple of really early days BUT well worth our while!! Our tour guide, Ørvind, has been FANTASTIC! The knowledge that he has of Norway is incredible - I guess he should, considering he's Norwegian. We have decided that we need to bring him home with us to teach us Norwegian and other things.......hmmmmm........ We left Loen and made our way to the Stalheim Hotel - which is at the very top of a mountain on a road full of switch backs. We have an amazing bus driver, to say the least. The Hotel over looks Sugar Mountain and the gorgeous valley below. It is nestled between two waterfalls and is full of antiques. Dinner was a buffet - AGAIN! (God, if I thought I was going to lose weight, I was mistaken) ... read more

I have a feeling we will be spending a lot of time, while the weather is still nice and not freezing, at Sognsvann, the same lake I have mentioned before. For example...Tobias, a boy from Germany that we know (for those from TU, this is the hip European Gavin) and Tomas (from the Czech Republic) held the first International Cake Party on a dock at the lake. It was surprisingly successful. Not that I thought it wouldn't be...but I didn't expect to see the dock completely covered with...hmm...AT LEAST thirty international students and tons of cakes and cookies, both homemade and bought. It was fun! I made a eplekake (apple cake) of dubious Norwegian identity. Apparently eplekake is a common type of cake here, but the recipe I got was from a Norwegian food blog, but ... read more

Skøl Everyone!!! Wow...I LOVE Norway! It feels like home to me. We spent our first day of our tour in Lillehamer & toured the Olympic Ski Jump. We made a trip down the ski lift and watched the althetic young lads training on the hill. It was very funny to see this in the middle of summer. But the jump is covered in green plastic fringey stuff and they wet it down. They were jumping right beside us as we came down the lift. The Norwegians keep their homes and properties very neat and tidy! Very colorful. Some homes have tile roofs but there are still lots that have sod roofs. Darlene is concerned about picking her raspberries off the roof. Apparently, the roof does not rot - weird!!! Today we drove up over the mountains ... read more

This is Dan, gonna transcribe Danielle's notes from last week to gradually bring this thing up to date. Sorry that this blog is kind of jarring in its back-and-forth entries but we're living here like it's 2001, i.e. easily available internet access doesn't appear too often. So here comes August 9-11: 09 Aug: IKEA CATASTROPHE We set out on foot from campus in a general direction towards downtown Oslo to get our month passes for public transit (a cushty network of trams, buses, ferries, and subways that extend through essentially the entire city and beyond, plush!). After successfully obtaining them, we tested out our newfound public transit access with a supply run to IKEA and were met with tremendous user failure. Needlessly walked at least 10 km in the rain on foot. Madhouse once we got ... read more

(Danielle speaking) My blessed being of a father is sending a cheap Dell laptop in to support the troops abroad. So we will be saved. Thank God. Will be able to call people, etc. in about a week, I expect. According to Dan's brother, his has an ethernet port somewhere, but it's been impossible to find. Hmm. We'll see. Just for the record, when we have our Skype up and working again (when internet access is achieved), we can be reached at (816) 399-4749. And we will only hear a call coming through when we're online, but don't hesitate to call if you like, because you can leave messages. We've already gotten some from my dad and Dan's dad. And we will call back as soon as it's a normal time where you live. I am ... read more

Ever since I was young I had three travel goals. Nr. 1. Going down under to Australia, Nr. 2. Going to Italy and Nr. 3. Going to as many places around the world as possible. During life so far I have been to Australia, I have been to Italy and I have been to many different places around the world but I still got many places to explore. I still have a hunger for traveling but now I also got a urge to share with other my experiences and hope to learn from others and get some good traveling tips from them. This blog will contain traveling stories from my small trips around my local area and from around the world as I am traveling, some pictures from my travel destinations and some tips about what ... read more

Hey Leute! Tu spedzilismy z Krzychem i Kaska troche czasu. Pomagalismy znanej norweskiej malarce -Greth'cie - przy otwarciu jej nowej galerii sztuki. Krzycho remontowal, my zapewnialysmy wsparcie psychiczne.
