Scandinavian breakfast buffets are fantastic. The one at Hordatun was the least impressive of all the ones I had this trip, but still better than just about anywhere else. I started to head north early and immediately ran into a lot more snow. There was a ski center just above the hotel, but I could not tell if it was closed or just early in the morning. Thru another tunnel, back into the snow, then thru another tunnel - I missed the tourist road above, clearly closed this time of year but there was not much to see anyway. On the other side, there was no snow but was overcast and drizzling. However, I made it to my first point of interest: Latefossen. This is a massive waterfall that falls just near a bridge with the ... read more

As this is being written we've been at Jorpeland (a few miles north of the Pulpit Rock) a couple of hours following our 575 km trek from Oslo. So yeah that number of km only transfers to 357 miles, so about a five or six hour drive, right? Well no, it was a little under eleven. We left Oslo on a limited access four lane and made great time-Google maps must be wrong with the time we concluded. About an hour later the fun began, only two or even one lane roads with the one laners intended to carry traffic both ways. Shades of Lake Como Batman! Yes Gary and Lu, you too will experience the fun of Como roads. Some of the most difficult driving was crossing the highest points (top of Norway). Folks stop ... read more

We had an early start to catch our shuttle up to Skjeggedal and the road up to a tiny village for the trailhead of Trolltunga. Many others had the same idea as our shuttle was full and the car parks were also nearly full. We started at the 400m above sea level mark and were set to increase to almost 1200m at its peak. Reasonably rugged up in merino gear, we set off on our 11km uphill jaunt. It was quite steep with steps constructed from rocks that had been transported up by Nepalese Sherpas, uneven but authentic. Zoë and Marcus travelled easily up the first section which was 1.7km and we rose by about 450m- (which was all under treeline). I struggled, I think due to my cold that is still persisting, making breathing a ... read more

Pulled up in the town of Odda for the night after a great drive from Lysebtn. Tourist book says ugliest town in Norway. Bit harsh, it is a little industrial but quite pleasant. Stopped at the Odda falls on way down into town and quite a show due to latest rain. Sues cooking tea (makes a change). Two hour drive to Flam and the mountain railway in the morning. Prices a little steep but hey it's a holiday and a one off trip. Scenery still pulling punches and can't wait for tomorrow. they don't get many Brits round here so quite the celebrities.... read more

From Jorpeland to Bergen 10 June 2014 Today was a beautiful day, with valleys rimmed with grey granite rocky mountains, some of which were snow-capped. Then there was the magnificent lakes, fjords, rivers with rapids and several thundering waterfalls. the area has important historical connections. Many of the valleys were farmed where we saw lots of white-plastic covered round bales of hay/green crops in green paddocks. There was a little grazing of cattle and sheep. We started our day in the closest camping site to the Pulpit Rock. We left about 9.00am and headed for Tau, Ardal, Hjelmeland (where we caught a 15 minute ferry), Sand (yet another 20 minute ferry), to Olen and west to Haugesund. On the way we passed many more lakes and travelled along the banks of fjords along the sometimes, narrow ... read more
