It is a pity that out house we have stayed in overnight in Kristiansund did not have its terrace with comfortable seating facing east rather than west. If it had we could have enjoyed our breakfast in warm sunshine. Instead we sat in the kitchen/dining room with the sun shining brightly through the windows making it so warm that we had to open the windows to let some air in. This has been the first occasion since we have been in Norway that the morning has started off with so much bright sunshine. For the last few nights we have had singles beds or bunks but at least they have been in the same bedroom. However last night was a bit different. Geo: 63.4267, 10.3945Today I made my way back to Nidaros cathedral, having learned that the Archbishops palace was only closed on Mondays. The intel turned out to be correct because amazingly, it was open! The archbishops palace consists of three buildings. Originally it was built for the archbishop of Nidarros (surprise) but later became a military barracks and now it is a museum. In the 80's two of the buildings burned down. While excavating the grounds, medieval artifacts were found and as a result a lot more is now known about life in the palace. It was a little town within itself with all sorts of trade going on. There were blacksmiths and wood craftsman, all sorts of things. The archaeological dig found evidence that women and children lived in the palace as well....I'm sure they ... read more

Trondheim 17 & 18 June 2014 We arrived in Trondheim in the afternoon of the 17 June. We could see that it was a good sized city with 160,000 people. We drove into "Sentrum" to get a 'feel' for the city. We ended up at the Fort by accident so went for a walk around. As it was getting onto 7.00pm we decided to look for somewhere to park for the night. We drove out into the suburbs and found a small car park which was next to a child care centre and near the city cemetery. We thought our neighbours would not be too noisy!!! Geo: 63.4346, 10.3985Today we finally landed in Norway, our first stop being Trondheim. Our first impressions were slightly underwhelming. Inland, in still waters, Trondheim is Norways third largest city. It consists of beautiful colourful houses on a forested and hilly backdrop with a canal running through the centre. With no tour planned for the day, we elected to explore on foot. An ATM gave us our first dose of the Norweigan Krone. A 1,000 Krone note basically = $190AUD. We continued on, dodging swarms of straggling, stumbling elderly cruise critters, before reaching the Nidaros Cathedral. Starting as a church in 1070 and named after the original name of the city, the cathedral was finally completed to stand as it does today around 1650. PS (aan het begin ja, anders leest de helft 'm niet): Aan alle verslagen zijn extra foto's toegevoegd, sommige op verzoek, andere voor de volledigheid. In Molde begint de Atlantic Route, niet geheel onverwacht een weg langs de Atlantische Oceaan, met daarin een paar grappige bruggen. Aan het begin stond dat alle tol afgeschaft was voor de route nadat deze afbetaald was in 1999 (hier wel..), beetje jammer dat ze de tolpoortjes gewoon aan het eind van de weg gezet hadden. Vinden ze hier sowieso wel grappig, automatische tolpoortjes. Ze staan echt overal waar ze een nieuw stukje weg of tunnel gemaakt hebben, of op wegen de stad in/uit. 's Avonds door Trondheim gebanjerd, waar geen plaats in de herberg was omdat, serieus, het World Tracking Championship gehouden werd, het WK kaartlezen voor gevorderden. In het ... read more
