8thOctober Zeebrugge to Berskens 17nm A quick trip up to Berskens today...finally we’ve made it to the Netherlands (can’t say Holland as that’s like an area in the middle of the Netherlands!) When we got in, we tied up on the visitors dock and tried to call the Marina Office, but were told by a very helpful Belgian guy that he was probably not answering as he should be out for lunch...go up there about 3pm he suggested. So we settled in for a cup of tea and waited. Later we checked in, returned to the boat and moved it up to the end of the dock as there as supposed to be lots of boats coming in on Friday for a race to Antwerp on Saturday. About an hour later there was a knock on ... read more

THE WINDMILL About 5km from our home (it is really Daphne's) is a village called Biggekerke. Population about 1000. It is a small village with a big history. In Biggekerke, on the island of Walcheren, a church already existed around 800AD and history declares that the 16th Century Reformation had a strong influence in the region. The brick church of today with spire reaching 30 metres and bells in the belfry could tell the history better than myself. The skyline of Biggekerke reaches high also because of the historic windmill. Its “sails” are 20 metres diameter, and while a church spire is strong and motionless the windmill sails are dynamic and strong and never fear to face the wind and swoop power from the air. It is more than likely that the tourist of 2014 will ... read more

Middelburg, the capital of the province of Zeeland was our next stop. We had heard from many that it was an excellent introduction into the Netherlands and after being here a couple of days we agree. The town is large enough to have all the services that you need all within an easy walk or bike ride away. Once we got settled in, we took our bikes off to go exploring. Most of the roads have bike paths running next to them, but if not, there were plenty of cobble stoned narrow streets that were easy to bike on. One thing that we took note of very quickly was the speed with which bicyclers ride and that most do not slow down at intersections or when pedestrians are crossing the street. With this in mind, when ... read more

We left Oostende, Belgium at 1PM and made our way to Breskens, Netherlands. We had hoped to make it to Vlissingen (Flushing to us English speakers), but we saw that we would need to go through a lock and bridge and understood that the last opening was at 7:30PM. It appeared as if it would be tight to make it across to Vlissingen so reverted to our plan B and headed to Breskens instead. Others had told us it had a good sized marina there. Janice’s motto for this trip is “better safe than sorry” so the decision was made. We found out later that the information about the last bridge opening in Vlissingen was not true, but it didn’t matter – we made it to the Netherlands during the 2013 sailing season! It has been ... read more

A certain sense of Déjà vu overcame us as we arrived at Dover and set sail for Dunkirk Woolly Says – it was quite a strange journey as Oliver’s Army set off on the same paths once travelled by Georgie. The best ferry we have had so far and though the crossing is half an hour longer than to Calais it didn’t seem it. We picked up the A10 and flew up the coast past our previous stopping points, we did a quick stop to see Fort Neopolian in Ostend (it was closed!) and since the wind was minimal we admired the beach for a few minutes before setting our one surviving female (Mia only works in the UK so we have left her there) Tomi, we were soon beetling along towards Gent. After a few ... read more

It had all seemed so simple when I came up with the idea - having finished my UK working holiday in May but elected to delay the start of my Canadian working holiday until July so that I could remain in Europe for the duration of the European football championships, it had occurred to me that I would have the best part of three weeks to fill in between the end of my week in Tenerife (unfortunately no photos and very little recollection of the events of that week means no travel blog!) and my eventual flight to Vancouver... so what better way to spend that time than by taking my bicycle (which had been left with friends near London for the previous six weeks) on the ferry over to Holland and cycle around the Netherlands ... read more

And here I am, writing my first travelblog entry ever in between learning French and completing that list of 100-things-I-still-need-to-do-before-I-leave. In about 20 hours, I'll be on a plane to FRANCE and I'll be staying there for no less than 5 weeks! Not that I'll be having one insanely long holiday there, not at all... In my university, every student has to learn a foreign language (and no, English or Dutch don't count) and I had the genious idea of picking French! But, since I lack the time to do all kinds of French courses during my semester, I figured France would be a pretty good place to learn the language. So, the entire month of July, I'll be studying French at the University of Lyon!! Magnifique! So, why on earth am I already going there ... read more

Last stop, the home stretch. I arrived in Amsterdam, and it was cold! And rainy, what terrible weather. I ended up buying a jacket since I had mailed mine back when I was in Hong Kong. I spent a couple days in Amsterdam looking around before Opa, Uncle Andy and Steven arrived. The hostel I stayed at, Inner Amsterdam, was not that great. Don't stay there. There is mice in the room and it has bug beds! Not a good way to start your trip in Holland. There were several guys from Britain in the dorm I was in and we looked around for a while. Went to the red light district but it was pretty touristic. I went to do a walking tour, the Anne Frank Museum, Rijks Museum, Van Gogh Museum and took a ... read more
