Visited Toni at work today after a lovely night´s sleep in their loft. Woke up to rain on the window above my bed. Loving Den Haag. Couldn´t bring my camera in to take a picture of Toni in her robe and bib (this is the UN after all, they have rules), but it was awesome to see her at work. At one point they were cross examining some guy about where some bodies were buried and I was watching Toni working at her computer. I turned to my mom and said ¨Isn´t she cute?¨What can I say? She was. I´m so proud of her and can only expect more great stuff. We stayed for about twenty minutes and met her for a break, then headed off to find a place for lunch. Ended up in ... read more

Yay. I finally made it more than ten miles outside the city. This past weekend my abroad group had an excursion to the Delft and The Hague. Delft is ridiculously cute. It’s like a miniature version of Amstedam: smaller canals, smaller terraces, and smaller houses. However, the amount of churches is certainly no less. I’m pretty sure that I could see about six church spires from my point in the center square. Delf is also where they make the blue and white pottery. There are only three legitimate factories that make the pottery anymore so everything else is a fake. Check out my picture to see the insignia for the legit factories. They also have the royal church in Delft, where the bodies of the royal family are buried. There were also a lot of ... read more

Verder moesten de ... read more

On Nov 11, I went on yet another WINGS International Student excursion. We went to Den Haag (Dutch name for The Hague, as is " 's Gravenhage"). We left early Saturday morning on a bus. We got in in the afternoon, and wandered the city for a short while. Its very small (less than 500,000 people), and not actually a city at all. It was purposely chosen as the seat of government as a tiny village, so no existing city would have undue influence or benefit. This means that nearly everyone in the city works for goverment in some capacity, which also means its not the most exciting city in the world, but it is fancy. We got to visit the Binnenhof ("Inner Court"), which is the center of Dutch government, where the Prime Minister works, ... read more

Day One - The Hague to Brussels This should've only taken 1 1/2hrs but trains were delayed and connections had to be made and 3 1/2hrs later we were finally in Brussels. We decided against the Van Gogh hostel since the q-tip experience really grossed us out. So we stayed at a place called Sleep Well. It was amazing! Just like a hotel but with dorm rooms. We were kicking ourselves for not booking this one last time. Day Two - Brussels to London Could've easily done this by Eurostar in a couple of hours but our budget didn't allow for such luxuries. So a train, train, bus, ferry, bus, another train, and an underground ride brought us to London. The highlight of the whole thing was seeing the White Cliffs of Dover on our way ... read more

We went to a place called Madurodam by Irenes house. It has all of Hollands famous buildings and architectural feats in minature. There was a little wooden shoe factory that if you put in a Euro a little truck would drive out of the factory and deliver a tiny pair of ceramic shoes to you. Also, did you know that Mars Bars are made in Holland? They had a mini chocolate factory and for 10cents a delivery truck would bring you a mini mars bar. We spent over 2hrs here, much longer than we intented, but it was so much fun! By that time the Peace Palace, where the international court is, was closed. So we drove by it instead. We walked around town and saw the government buildings. But it started to pour so we ... read more

A friend of mine that I met last year when working in Wales lives in The Hague. She was kind enough to let us stay at her flat for a few nights. We got into Holland Spoor train station around 1pm. I have to mention the public washroom at this station. It is worth the 50 cents! There are fresh flowers and tea lights on the counters, an array of perfumes, lotions etc at your disposal, candy dishes full of toffees and mints. And a display case of jewellery for sale. It is one of the only bathrooms worth its fee. (The only other WC that was impressive was on called Mc Clean, yes it is a toilet chain throughout Europe). My friend Irene picked us up and we just relaxed for most of the day. ... read more

The idiotic smile remains on my face even as I board the ferry to Holland. There will be no tears shed on Englands behalf, not that it is that bad, but I've just had enough for now. However will the Netherlands really be any better ?, or will it be the cestpool of moral decay that it is often portrayed as. For a boat of its size the ferry moves incredibly quick and I'm actually dissapointed that it only takes about 3hrs. The ferry is more comfortable than any place I've been in the last week. During the trip I cross reference my map of Holland and my contact list and decide that my first stop will be in Den Haag to visit my aunts friends. It seems like everybody on the list is a ... read more
