I’ve been feeling kinda blah the past few days, sleeping all day, and then being tired cause I slept too much. One of my usual funks, I guess. It doesn’t help that I only have class from Tues 6-8pm, Weds 12-2, and Thursday 10-12 and 6-8pm. No real incentive to get out of bed… But alas there is! I’m in the freaking Netherlands! Two of my friends have already planned a trip to Italy during our week of in October, and I’m realizing that I need to get off my butt and actually travel! October 6 I’m going to a sort of trance music dance festival in Amsterdam. I think its gonna be really fun. They play a lot of trance and electronic type music in some of the pubs/dance clubs, and I love it! ... read more

Ik ben Alison. Ik kom uit America. Ik woon in Van Houtenlaan, in Groningen. Hoe heet jij? Yay Dutch! So I'm SO Dutch now that not only can I introduce myself, I can ride a bike with a person or *get this* a case of beer on the back! And bottles, no less! I'm a rockstar! Twice now I've been the designated beer transporter to parties in "The Containers" (a international student living area where the buildings are like giant modules/mobile homes/shipping containers). It is very exciting, and only once did I almost run into a car! Classes are going well. I'm really enjoying my ecocriticism class (yay, I already knew what "Deep Ecology" is! I'm ahead of the curve!) My Dutch lang class is interesting cause a lot of the "students" are acutually older people ... read more

Today I had my first negative experience with my bike here in the Netherlands (well aside from having to bike a half-hour to get back from a party night before last, that was just excruciating). My bike tried to eat my skirt... I was all great in the morning, yeah, I was wearing a longer skirt, but it was working fine. Then I get into the city center, (where everyone can see me) and as soon as I come out of a cafe (with coffee, not to be confused with a 'coffeeshop' with pot) hopped on my bike, pedaled twice and then all of a sudden slowed way down as my skirt was being pulled down, threatening to rip right off (boy, that would be a long bike-ride home, huh?). I drowned my sorrows in some ... read more

I'm here in the Netherlands and everything is incredible! I've been here for a little over a week, and I'm just now getting over the shock of being abroad. For the last few days, I took part in the local international student organization's introduction week, full of parties and tours etc (so now I'm exhausted from going to pubs every night ;-) ) Groningen (the city i'm in) is very close to Germany (a little over 30 minutes by train), 2.5 hours from Amsterdam, and about 6 hours by train from Paris and the UK, so hopefully I'll get to travel all around, especially because the railpasses are relatively cheap. For now, I've been exploring the city on my new bike (EVERYONE has a bike here) and on the busses (my first time with mass transit!) ... read more

Presentation day. The previous night when I returned home feeling the effect of the Amstel beer, I implored Jochem and Jaust to allow me to skip a lecture or two the following morning such that I could wake up refreshed. Jochem's response was, “We have a saying here in Holland. It is, ‘A man in the evening, and a man in the morning’”. Translation: Party hard at night, but wake up early and put a full working day in the next day. With that source of inspiration in mind, I bound out of bed at 0900 hr, to a delicious breakfast (complete with chocolate spread and chocolate sprinkles - I am, after all, in Holland) prepared by Jochem. I realized that I haven’t described the actual conference yet. Its name is the International Students Congress of ... read more

Today I arose at 0345 hr in order to grab a ‘taxibus’ that was to take me to the Geneva airport. Having worked on my presentation the previous night until about 12:00 p.m., I felt like I had never gone to sleep at all. My EasyJet flight was in the air by 0630 and we touched down to a beautiful day in Amsterdam at 0830. Groningen, the town where the conference was held, is situated in the north of The Netherlands. Thankfully, due to its small size, a train from the center (Amsterdam) to the north only takes 2.5 hours. I arrived in Groningen at 12:00 and was shortly therein whisked away by a member of the ISCOMS organizing committee to the faculty of medicine building. Here is where I registered and received my information packet ... read more
