Well after 5 days of full on cycling, battling against a headwind all the way, I've finally made it to Groningen! Hardly my destination, but given the ardour getting here, and kind of intermediary success. In fact I assumed that Groningen would somehow be close to Denmark, but on inspecting a map I've discovered to my horror that what is to follow across Germany to get to the ferry port for Denmark is pretty much the same again as what I've done (I´m sure this is not the way it seemed when I checked Google Maps back home). So at this rate it'll be June before I make it to Copenhagen. Let me fill you in on the last couple of days. Firstly I've seen a lot more cute, picturesque Dutch towns. Really there's not ... read more

Hello all! I am now in the Netherlands in Groningen with my Dutchies!! It has been great so far! The trains were very delayed coming from Eindhoven to Groningen so that was a bit frustrating, but having mark and siward there to greet me in Eindhoven airport!! We met up with almost all the girls..minus Eveline and had a beer/milk haha! I am staying at Gurdie's house right now (its awesome and in city center) and we woke up early to meet everyone for coffee and then we climbed the Martini tower (the only toursit attraction in the city haha). It was great! I had ollenboll(?) which is yummy and what they eat on New Years. Its like the greatest doughnut ever but in a ball shape with rainsons and more spongey! Then I had "new ... read more

It was on this part of our trip we discovered our little car has automatic window-wipers (in fact we still don't know what half the buttons in the car are for!). From Germany we entered the Netherlands. Our first night there we stayed at a camp ground right next to Hoge Veluwe National Park. So we spent our next day exploring the park, and trying to find some wildlife. There are supposed to be Red deer, moufflon and wild boar throughout the park - well we spent about 6 hours walking/driving/and sitting in hideouts waiting, and still we didn't see a dam thing! After our failed atempts to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife we drove North to Niew Roden, a little village south of Groningen. Here we stayed with Anna's rellies (Paulus, Alice, Simon ... read more

The 9th sucked. I had no couchsurf place to go to in groningen and since I was there by 2pm, I decdied to press on further along my route and stay in a hotel, problem was I couldn't find a hotel that was open. Unbeleivably, many hotelliers go on holiday in August, the busiest tourist season, what the hell is worng with them? its like a bottel store owner deciding to go on vacation around New Year's... so anyway, an hour's circling around a city with the lovely name of Hoozegard, all the time thinking I could have used this time to press on with my route, and finally got a hotel. Oh, I have telemetry on my bike computer now (when I noticed it had come on I literally said outloud 'hey, telemetry' I know ... read more

Hello all.... My plans for traveling through Europe have rather fallen through because of the realities of time, so instead I'm just visiting the friends in Holland that I've made over the past year or so... I'm now in the university city of Groningen (in the north -- I assure you it is not pronounced how you're reading it!) staying with my friend Laura. I've managed to make myself feel a little ill every single day since being in the country by eating too much cheese. Alas, it's the price one has to pay... Good thing I'm not interested in many of the other luxuries Holland has to offer, as I would probably end up feeling even more ill! Nothing terribly exciting to report on... I'm as always far too shy to attempt to say basic ... read more
