Carol, the queen of research had prior to leaving NZ found a suggested three day itinerary on the internet, that ticked the boxes for the things we wanted to see, following that we started day two walking the length of Albert Cuyp Markt. Touted as the largest daytime market in Europe and the place to try authentic Dutch food (stroopwafel for Carol) and to find souvenirs by the ton, it certainly lives up to it's reputation. Open six days a week it is a very easy place to spend hours and lots of dollars, it has a multicultural flavour to it these days selling pretty much everything you can buy. Bloemenmarkt (flower market), the only floating flower market in the world was a treat to visit. Anne Frank House not so much, as although such well ... read more

Amsterdam the capital and largest city of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, sits at the weirdest of elevations; minus 2 metres - go figure! Originally a small fishing village in the late 12th century it now has around 850,000 residents in the municipality with another 1.3 million urban dwellers. Some of it's more famous residents being Anne Frank, artists Rembrandt and van Gogh, philosopher Baruch Spinoza and it lays claim to having the oldest stock exchange in the world. It has a few other claims to fame, including being near the top of the list in every category tested for drug levels in wastewater (except for methamphetamine) and for it's sex and drug tourism. We've never smoked so much hooch in our lives - even if it was all second hand. With Carol travelling from Belgium ... read more

Our cruise ends in Amsterdam but our vacation is not at an end. We take a taxi to the apartment we rented on Airbnb. We settle in and go grocery shopping. We were surprised to find the store does not take credit cards or our debit card, good thing we have euros. We take a walk and check out Vondel park which is near our apartment. It is midweek yet there are so many people riding bikes, walking, playing games and laying in the beautiful and large park. We make dinner in our apartment and wait for Brad who is flying in from San Francisco to spend the next month traveling with us. Brad takes a train and tram from the airport, no problem. This morning we head to Mac Bikes, and rent bikes for three ... read more

First visit today the Rijkmuseum. This is dedicated to Dutch arts and history in Amsterdam. Because of the continuing track work it took a little longer than we hoped to get to Amsterdam. The Rijkmuseum is huge with art works from Rembrandt, Vermeer and Van Gogh amongst others. We had a too quick look through as I had managed to get tickets for Anne Frank House at 15:00. Most tickets are sold out for this 2 months in advance, however they release 100 tickets for the 11:30 to 11:45 slot at 19:30 the night before and the time slots 15:00 to 15:15 and 15:15 to 15:30 in the morning. This saves queueing for a couple of hours after 15:30. Our tickets to the Rijkmuseum were for all day so we planned to go back after Anne ... read more

A slow start to the day saw us grab something for breakfast and then run for the train. In Amsterdam, we stopped for a coffee/beer before going to the Heineken Experience. Andy asked for a flat white for me. It came in a very small cup and was very, very strong. It was pouring with rain at this stage and so we bought a couple of umbrellas. At the Heineken Experience, we were glad we had prepaid as we could walk straight in rather than stand in the rain waiting for admittance. it is a self guided tour with lots of staff on hand giving talks or providing advice. It is a very family oriented business from its early beginnings. I hadn't realised that the e's the label are smiling e's. It is a good tour ... read more

We had a great flight over and enjoyed our business class flight. We even got some sleep on the way over so although we landed a bit 'spaced out' we were not jet lagged. We are staying at the Marriott Renaisance which is right down by the canals and a great walking location. Our room was not ready yet so we had to hang out in the club lounge and then it started to REALLY REALLY rain...... so at 1:30 when we finally got our room we decided to NOT go on our scheduled 2pm walking tour but instead take our time getting settled. One packing note...... for those of you who pack perfume..... and note to self.... never pack perfume in a suitcase without securing the lid and securing the bottle in a zip lock ... read more

The next morning we were treated to a wonderful breakfast. Lots of food choices. I had crispy bacon, scrambled eggs, and chicken sausage. I had water and apple juice to drink. I did notice that they don’t serve milk as a beverage just like in England. We headed out for our first location, the Gassan Diamonds Factory. The Amsterdam diamond company, Gassan Diamonds, is located in the former steam-driven diamond polishing factory. In this monumental building, we saw the diamond cutters at work while our guide explained the diamond cutting and polishing process. Gassan Diamonds has over 425 years of craftsmanship and tradition. It is famous for the ‘Amsterdam Cut’ diamond and also, Gassan's inhouse cut diamond; the Gassan 121, which has 121 facets. During our visit to Gassan Diamonds, we had the opportunity to purchase ... read more

An early start this morning to get to the airport in time for our early flight to Amsterdam. Glad we had plenty of time as delays in paying an extra fee for the airport once we got of the train. Would have been a nightmare if it had been busy. At Amsterdam caught the Sprinter train to Weesp were we are staying. A little out of central Amsterdam but only 20 minutes by express train and a lot less in accommodation costs. Weesp is a small historic town about 3 km to the south of Amsterdam on the river Vecht. It was once fortified, and several of the bastions, moats and forts still survive. The first thing we noticed on arrival were the hundreds of bicycles staked outside the station. A short walk past the canals ... read more

We made it to our hotel on the outskirts of Amsterdam about 4:45. We are heading out to do a canal cruise and dinner. We arrived in Amsterdam about 4:30. We are staying on the outskirts of Amsterdam at the Mercure Hotel. My room is on the 15thfloor. The hotel lobby and dining areas are very modern. Amsterdam has a population of 851,373 within the city proper, 1,351,587 in the urban area, and 2,410,960 in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. The city is located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses... read more
