After 2 very busy months it is time for a new blog entry. But...... First of al I wish you all the best for 2012!!!!! The past 2 months I've been busy with the last preparations for my trip. Had to get a visa, some vaccines and finish up my regular schoolwork. But I can finally say that I'm ready to go. I somehow managed to get all my stuff in one suitcase. Besides all the necessary preparations I took the time to search the internet for some recreational time-passing. This resulted in me buying season tickets for the Hawks (Just to make the Dutch basketball fellows jealous, January 14th Minnesota is visiting Atlanta!!!!!). I also started planning a by then well-deserved holiday in May. But more information about that later. My new year’s resolution is ... read more

After I got accepted in the atlantis programm I filled in the official application forms for GSU and sended them with my bank statements. These statements were hard to get. The people at the bank didn't knew what they were called (solvability statements) and by the time we figured it out it was almost to late to get them. When these statement finaly arrived it seemed they didn't fill the requirements from GSU but we sended them anyway. Today (6 weeks later) I got an e-mail that I'm officially accepted at GSU and all the paperwork (yes even more paperwork) is on its way. This means i can start the proces of getting a visa, entlist for my classes and housing, etc. Last week the inline course (international education) that I have to follow finaly started. ... read more

Convinced Michael Scotts new book would be released earlier and I somehow forget I had subscribed for a newsletter I opened the Atlantis e-mail. This mail exceeded my expectations and I after reading it through a number of times my American dream found renewed hope. The Han-university would sent 3 applicant to the US with the Atlantis program. Al you had to do was write an easy, fill in some vague forms, do an interview and get 2 recommendations. So I decided to try-out, wrote an essay, filled in the forms, bugged some people and asked for recommendations (for which I’m still grateful) and handed over a thick envelope with paperwork. After a week or so I got another e-mail asking me to come in for the scheduled interview. So nervous and excited I hopped on ... read more

Well here we go, my first USA-blog, in my very best English. I guess it's good practice…… 5 months ago I went to a meeting about studying abroad with some fellow education students. It sounded interesting and I had my mind set upon going to the USA. To go to America was a wish I had since I was a little girl and that has grown stronger over the years (inspired a lot by my basketball teammates who visited basketball country number 1). At this meeting I got quite disappointed. Almost everyone seemed to be interested in studying in a third world country or in Europe. Africa and Asia were really popular and there was a lot of (very useful) information on studying here. But nothing about visiting America (or Canada which was plan B). Not ... read more

We left Toronto late due to a thunder storm, had a bumpy flight to Montreal and then on to Brussels where we arrived in the rain. We attempted to hop on an open top bus to see the main sights of Brussels, but it poured with rain so we sought cover in the bus, which then leaked like a sieve affecting the electronics so all in all our time in Brussels was not great. The following morning, Tuesday, once again in pouring rain we collected our car, a peugot 5 door hatch, and with much stress & cursing and a defective GPS we managed to find our way to the Netherlands. Driving on the right side of the road is an experience, but it did not take Dave long to master the art. We drove to ... read more

Sorry for the long wait, again. We've bee doing a lot of visiting family and winding down a bit. i'll probably post photos of the last 4 or so weeks from home. Thursday, August 4 (Continued) After ikea, we went t the Panakoekenhuis for supper, it had a petting zoo and massive playground, and pancakes came in flavours like pizza and cheese. Friday, August 5. It rained in the morning, and I volunteered with Tante Nel at a restaurant in town, which I really enjoyed. At 4óclockish, we picked up Oma and went to Ome Jord and Tante Grada's house for supper. They had a huge vegetable garden and fruit trees in their backyard! After supper we headed to Johan and Anja's house (their son and daughter-in-law). They had a beautiful house and horse barns. Their ... read more

Morning. Saturday, July 30. We went to Scherpenzeel to pick up our Oma at her sister's house. It was fantastic to see her again, and we had desserts and drinks in Tante Joke's (Yo-keh) beautiful garden. We headed to Sneek (Snake) in the afternoon and found a small, basic, internet-less campground. We brought Oma to Tante Harmke and Ome Wiebe's house, then returned to the campground. It was very cold so we went bowling. Mom won. Sunday, July 31. We listened to a sermon and headed into Sneek to Dad's cousin Dieuwke + Nico's. They are super nice people and have a lovely house. We eat and go for a ride through the canals and lakes around Sneek. We saw the house where my Pake was born and Dieuwke lived, and Dad did a bunch of ... read more

Today we drove to Arnhem, Netherlands to have a short visit with my cousin Fred Royers, his Mom, wife Krista, and sister Mona. We had never met except on Skype and it was a pleasure to meet him in person. With a population of only 150,000, Arnhem looks a lot bigger. But my Dad's Brother Jon decided to settle there after meeting "Mousie" and having three chidren Fred, Mona, and Simon. Fred now teaches kick boxing at his own studio-gym but had a career as a middleweight kick boxer. Seems like the Royers have some of that boxing talent running through the family since my Father was also a boxer, but not at the pro level. Driving in Europe (my sister Margie drove her Skoda this time) is a bit more "exciting" than in the states ... read more

Yesterday I had a ''catching up day" with two lots of cousins from my Mum's side. The Schutten sisters, a few of them live in Zutphen and the Koers sisters, some of who live in Ruurlo. We talked of our lives, and as women do, talked of love and loss and we laughed and thank God i have family!!!! Thank you Bernadet, Else, Miriam, Marian, Adelheid and Irene. Today was another wonderful day with my cousin Gerry and his wife Gerry, at whose house i have been staying at in Vorden. We went to the Openlucht Museum which is a recreated village of times gone by. Each house and shop is original and restored and has been moved to the site from parts of Holland. A tram takes you around the site and between places if ... read more

A 6 hour train trip took me from Germany to Holland where i have 44 cousins scattered over this tiny country. Stayed with the eldest one in Borne for a night and the next morning we did a little bike ride around the place to see some of the sites. Bike riding and The Dutch is like bread and cheese. They just go together and belong. All day long on paths and roads and through forests and along the laneways, there is a procession of bikes and riders. Old couples out for a picnic, young Mums with a kid in front and one behind out shopping, whole teams on racing bikes, kids out and about, massive amounts of parked bikes at train stations, biking is like breathing, part of everyday life. Yesterday i travelled to another ... read more
