After a seven and a half hour bus journey from Ohrid, Macedonia, I finally arrived in Budva, Montenegro! Upon my arrival at the bus station, I was immediately greeted by taxi drivers all willing to take me to my destination (Mojo Hostel). Instead, I opted to follow the printed map and walk to the hostel. Since the reception officially opens at around 9am, I decided to hop online for a while and explore the wonderful world of the internet! lol After sending some emails and updating my travel blog, I had a breakfast that consisted of an orange, changed my clothes and decided to head to the atm for some much needed cash, get a local sim card, and walk around the Old Town/beach area. Budva is extremely touristic compared to Ohrid. It's only June 27th ... read more

Our time in Albania had come to a close and it was time to make a decision as to our next move, getting out of Albania was becoming just as difficult at getting in. We would have loved to have visited Prizen or Pristina in Kosovo however after looking at out remaining time in Europe before heading back to Georgia we realised that we had to make some sacrifices, Kosovo was one of these. Our next plan was to take a bus to Budva however there are no direct buses into Montenegro from Albania; instead you must take three buses and hope that you can connect from one to the other. After much debating we decided we would skip the three buses which would have taken most of the day and night and instead took a ... read more

Day 3 The next morning we were up and out and wandered down to the beach. We wanted to try and get onto the island at Sveti Stefani. We knew it had been turned into a hotel, but understood that we might be able to visit it – at a cost. We walked (the back way) i.e more stairs and through some woody bits and eventually found ourselves by the beach. We walked to the causeway which led to the island, and were promptly stopped by security. The guard in the hut explained that we could only go over if we were paying guests or were having dinner over there. We wheedled, but it didn’t work, we were going to have to miss it. We left and walked a little along the pebbly public beach (we ... read more

Many people would wonder what was the design behind going to the Adriatic seaside for mere 24 hours… I cannot really explain, but now that I’ve seen the place I’ll go there again for a longer period. Montenegro is a small country but it has two things I like most – sea and mountains. I departed from Novi Sad (“Sad” does not mean “gloomy” here, it means a “garden”) at 7 in the morning and the bus drove very slowly that’s why I came late for our bus to Budva at 8.30. The anxious Vasia was waiting for me at the departure platform but I was quite calm because there would be a bus in just four hours. They refunded our money save a 300-Dinar deduction and we bought new tickets. Beware, the cashier could not ... read more

Yes, yes. I know what you're thinking, you've never heard of Budva right? Well, the truth is neither had I just a week ago! For the record I'm sure the guys are fabulous, but if you'll indulge me for a moment I'd like to comment briefly on the women. I arrived on New Year's Day in the middle of the heaving celebrations, with people flocking from all over the Balkans to ring in the new year in this picturesque Adriatic city. I stepped out for a stroll when the earth shook to it's very foundations. So then, what's the story morning glory? Oh that's it, suddenly it dawned on me that never before have I seen such beautiful women! Finally there's a city to rival St Petersburg, and the ladies promenade here like they've just stepped ... read more

Linnoituskaupungista toiseen - Kotorin kautta Budvaan Dubrovnik jäi taakse ja matka jatkui Montenegron Budvaan jonne saavuimme pohjoisesta Hertzeg Novin ja Kotorin kautta. Adrian meren rannikko koko Kroatian matkalta on vuoristoista ja karua mutta maisemiltaan silti todella upeaa. Korkeat sypressit kasvavat ihan rantakallioille ja pinjametsiköt reunustavat teitä. Montenegroon saapuessa maisemat kuitenkin hieman muuttuvat ja etenkin Kotorin lahti on varsin erinäköinen kuin Kroatian rannikko. Kotorin lahti on pitkälle sisämaahan työntynyt lahti joka vaikuttaa melkeinpä vuonolta – lahtea reunustavat korkeat ja jyrkät vuorenseinämät ja lahden rannalla pilkistelee useita pieniä ja vähän isompia vanhoja kaupunkeja. Lahden perimmäisestä nurkasta löytyikin jälleen oikein helmi – Kotorin vanha linnoituskaupunki. Kaupungin satamassa on lukematon määrä upeita suuria purje- ja moot... read more

After the intensely urban Belgrade, it was refreshing to fly into Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. My flight was delayed so I got in late and didn't have time to walk around the city as I planned, but the next morning I had a beautiful view from my hotel room. I caught the bus to Budva, a very popular resort town on the coast. Our minibus went through winding mountain roads navigated carefully by our driver. The old town of Budva was about 30 minutes walk from my hotel, but most of that walk was along the coast on a touristy promenade. ... read more

Yesterday, for my last full day in Montenegro, a group of people staying at my hostel (me, an Australian, two Icelanders and a Canadian) rented out a car and went for a drive into the mountains. Definitely one of the best things I've done on this trip so far. We drove south along the beautiful coastal road, passing the famous old town (sadly now privately-owned and not open to the public) of Sveti Stefan. We then visited the enormous Skadar Lake, which straddles the Montenegro-Albania border, before heading inland into the Montenegrin hinterland, driving for hours along winding country lanes which afforded fantastic views. Out there in the mountains we encountered wild tortoises plodding along the road, as well as some huge brown snakes basking in the sun. We also went to the wonderful, isolated village ... read more
