When planning my trip I hadn't given a great deal of consideration to Montenegro; I'd read that it was possible to go there on daytrips from Dubrovnik, but I hadn't envisaged myself dedicating any more time to it than that. However, a lot of people I met in Istanbul and Sarajevo really highly recommended me the tiny mountain nation, many rating it more highly than Croatia. So I decided to sacrifice a few of the days I'd originally alotted to Croatia in order to properly visit Montenegro. Thus at 7am on Friday morning I boarded the bus from Mostar to Kotor. The first half of the journey took me through Bosnian and Croatian countryside, which was of course very attractive - there was a 20-minute stop in Neum, Bosnia's only coastal town, which had some great ... read more

Montenegro is a beautiful many-mountained country with a gorgeous coast-line. If like me you hadn't heard of this country prior to Casino Royal, thats because it's only been an independent country since 2006 and was the newest country in the world prior to Kosovo declaring independence in 2008. I was based at the Hippo Hostel in Budva for the week, about half way up the coast where it's easy to travel to everywhere else in the country within a few hours: Ulcinj near the Albanian border is 2 hours away; Sveti Stefan was a 2hour walk and then a 15min bus ride back; Kotor is 30 minutes on the bus. Kotor Bay is the 2nd biggest fjord in the world with some stunning views especially after a walk up the 1000+ steps of the old city ... read more

With the Kosova Constitution Day holiday, Deb, Jane, Cate, and I decided to be adventurous, rent a car, and drive to Budva, Montenegro for some sun, sand, and seafood. Since all the vehicles here, or the majority at any rate, are manual instead of automatic, this gave us pause, but, luckily for us, Cate is an expert stick-shift driver. We cruised out of Prishtina right after school on Friday the 8th and headed south. We made it through Kosova fine, but ran into trouble almost as soon as we entered Albania. Imagine that you are going on a road trip. You have your map, snacks, clothes for the weekend. Your car is full or friends and laughter. Every time the road turns or splits or divides you see, as you would expect, road signs telling you ... read more

Dubrovnik It never ceased to amaze me that I can travel "alone" & yet never really be alone!! mostly I see this as a blessing... though, there were times that I truly cherished my 'alone time'--- Dubrovnik gave me that after a loooong time of travelling with others.... well at least for one day it did.. haha!! Ola, Ange and I split up in Barcelona... Ola headed for the only corner of Spain she hadn't seen yet - the north-west part; Ange flew to Belgrade to meet up with Effie & Dragan who were travelling in Montenegro from Australia; and I flew to Dubrovnik to mee Ange & co 2 days later... If taking a cheap flight from Spain, its common to fly Vueling Airlines - despite their many strikes & known delays :p I found ... read more

After my university graduation in 2010, my parents gifted me with a present - a family travel to Montenegro. I did not even expect that they would congratulate me with the graduation in this way. Anyway, I was really happy, because it was my first journey to Europe. Our travel took a week, but it was a highly saturated week. First of all, we enjoyed to the full the local sights near out hotel in Przno town: the bay, small islands, crystal-clear Adriatic water, etc. We also managed to visit some cities (Budva, Kotor, and Tivat) and a village (Njeguši) in Montenegro. Moreover, we even went on an excursion to the most attractive city in Croatia - Dubrovnik. Montenegro is a wonderful country with its own unique culture and interesting history. Since the population of this ... read more

Another in a string of questionable titled-related puns, thus prompting me not to give up my day job just yet. Arriving in Budva instantly revealed a wholly different atmosphere from Dubrovnik, and with a plan of action already drawn up for this leg of the holiday, it looked upon first glance as though the stay at the commendable hotel Tatjana would provide a suitable base, both location- and facilities-wise. Budva comes across almost instantly as an up-and-coming resort, and the guide book's description of Budva as the coast's 'star turn' is not terribly far off the mark, especially when you consider its crop of tourist activities, and overall allure. The Old Town, for instance, is a highly attractive enclave of narrow streets and quaint shops, which also gives a reasonable insight into Montenegrin cities' old town ... read more

Itś the end of another wonderful day. More breathtaking scenery and sunny skies. It was close to 90 today, but we did not notice it much as there was shade and a breeze. The locals are complaining about the humidity, but they obviously do not know humidity. Kristie has admitted that this is worth the flight and said that Door County is now ruined for her. That gives you an idea of how gorgeous it all is. Mountains overlooking the sea and at times it is similar to fjiords. Eileen and Margaret took a boat to a man made island with an Orthodox church, while the rest of us rested and had refreshments. I asked our tour driver about the wildlife and as he spoke very little English I had to use sign language and sounds. ... read more

Eileen, May 27 Okay where do I start? We took a train for 10 hours from Belgrade to Bar arriving at 10:00 at night. Took two taxies to the town we were going to for our hostel and they drove 80 miles an hour around the curves and cliffs of the Adriatic sea. Jane was the trooper who found Smile, our Hostel owner who met us at the bus stop and guided us the rest of the way to a beautiful Hostel which is like a hotel. He took us to dinner at midnight to this outdoor bar and restaurant for pizza and beer. The train ride was so breathtakingly beautiful we thought we saw the best until we got around the next corner. Pictures can not record what we saw it will just have to ... read more

BAR/BUDVA/DUBROVNIK Day 72 I woke up a little sad in the morning. Vjera and Radovan have been so incredibly kind and I have really enjoyed their company. I think they have actually adopted me as one of their grandchildren. They are truly lovely people and I am sad to say goodbye to them. When I came down for breakfast Vjera had a heart pendant necklace for me and gave me one of the Easter eggs. We had breakfast, Burek and my other two pork chops, and coffee and then Vjera filled a bag of food for my journey: Burek, sweets, and mandarins. I gave Vjera my Canada pin and some of my Amber block that I bought in Morocco. I only wish I had more with me to give them but I will send them ... read more

Ostrag Monastery & Budva days 9-11 (July 6 - July 8) Leaving Sarajevo we took a bus to our next destination, Ostrag Monastery. The road from Sarajevo through the nearby mountains was very narrow with some lovely sheer drops, but this of course meant great views. Especially initially we were on a narrow country road with not much passing room for the oncoming traffic. You can see why this area is spoken of in the same breath as Switzerland. We were met at the roadside stop by a local mini-bus for the rest of our journey. If we thought the previous roads were narrow then this last part had us all holding our breath. The road snaked up the side of a mountain, with loose edges that one more than one occasion we had to move ... read more
