We had heard that there's an excellent market in Floriana on a Sunday, but despite asking several people in the hotel, we were at a loss as to exactly where it is. Most people seemed to think that we were after some local fish market, which, quite rightly, they thought was a bizarre thing for us to be asking about. Eventually one of the receptionists told us that it was at the park-and-ride, about 20 minutes' walk away, so we looked that up on Google Maps and set off to find it. What we didn't know is that the market finished at 11.00am, and we arrived at 11.30am to find everyone in the process of clearing everything away. It was a lot of walking in horrendous heat for no reason (although we did get to see ... read more

We’ve had a few days of relaxation, so now it’s time for some exercise. We get on the bus (yes I know that’s not exercise) and head off towards St Thomas Bay a couple of kilometres south of Marsaskala, where we plan to hike the Munxar Path. There are some sandy beaches on the Bay, one of which seems to be well populated with British youngsters. If their pale skin is anything to go by I think they might have come here straight from the airport. I’m not sure why, but in our experience British beachgoers seem to have a strange aversion to hats, tee shirts and sunscreen. I think you can probably be allergic to sunscreen, but an entire nation? ... and anyway that wouldn’t explain the hats and tee shirts thing. It’s virtually cloudless ... read more

Malta day 1 June 1st Have you ever considered how much time you spend on tarmac? No? Me neither until today. And then Teresa May, Trump and their predecessors left me stranded on the tarmac at Birmingham airport for an extra two hours. Your wars abroad and bombing of innocents meant that when an extra bag was unaccounted for in the hold every passenger had to get off and identify their luggage. And then we struggled to get a take off slot. And apparently there wasn't a surplus bag in the end. And so we sat on the tarmac (well, in the plane) but you get my drift for far too long. But not long enough to get compensation. And this was after we'd been on that damned M6. More tarmac. We are now going on ... read more

... read more

Today we decided to go for a walk - just for a change. We got the bus to Xemxija (try pronouncing that) and walked through St Pauls Bay to Bugibba and Qawra. The bay is certainly very picturesque and photogenic with all the boats bobbing about in the harbour. Like most places here, the bay is very rocky and walking around involves quite a few hills and diversions along the way. Walking certainly gives you the opportunity to observe things that you miss when driving car. At one point we came across a hidden cove, with a small cave. The water is crystal clear and warm and sheltered. Once we got through St Pauls Bay we came across Wignacourt Tower, which is the first coastal defence tower built by the Knights. There is a whole series ... read more
