Up early due to heat and to some extent the jet lag. Breakfast at the hostel and then a walk around town. Gus and I stumbled on a group of men betting on which cup a pea was under. Looked pretty simple at first glance and we guessed correctly each go until it came to placing some dollars on the game. Due to the fact that I didn't have correct money to bet and Gus did he quickly placed a bet. There's a saying that a fool and his money are soon parted. It's correct but should read two fools. Lol. We got scammed! Gus reckons we could have eaten for a week on what he gave away. Lesson learnt. I did take a photo of him googling how much he'd lost but didn't have the ... read more

zy archiSkopje, the capital of Macedonia is not on many people to go list. Still, it is recognized as one of the cheapest city to live in Europe if you are an expat. I can confirm, having a full meal is not expensive at all! Macedonia has also some serious problems with their Southern neighbor, I mean Greece. They both seem to not agree about few historical points, and have a huge contentious about the use of names, like the one of Alexander the Great! Oh, and Macedonia couldn't be called Macedonia at the UN, but rather "The former Yugoslav Republic Macedonia". This is thanks to the intervention of Greece at the UN. So you can already understand that nothing is easy, we are in the Balkans! So Skopje is crazy about Alexander the Great, and ... read more

In the twilight of early morning the cliff-side swallows trill us awake. They are the first creatures to pierce the canyon quiet. Too late to sleep and too early to head off to feed they kill the time in between, preening and gossiping alongside their cliff-mates high above the water. The lake is more viscous for the night chill. Cohesive as quicksilver and icy-still, the mirror-like surface is a panorama of inverted Karsks and singing birds. It is 6 AM. I'm hanging out the window and breathing it all in with a shiver. We are in Macedonia. The place is called Matka; 'The Womb'. We found it by accident. We had planned a short stay in Skopje; Macedonia's capitol before moving north to Belgrade. The Tripadvisor map showed us the locations of Skopje's hotels. I noticed ... read more

The capital of Macedonia, Skopje has a LOT of statues. And sun, like most of the Balkans in the summer. When I got here, I decided to change my plane ticket to come home a week earlier. I realized I could still see what I wanted to see and be home with more time to relax before going back to work. A win-win. I couldn't get to the airline office before they closed, but I talked to them on the phone from the hostel, and they could change my ticket, but I would have to pay for it on the phone with the airline in Belgrade directly. I wasn't sure how to do this, because skype was outdated on my work computer and I have no access to update it. But then this German guy let ... read more

Before we go any further, I'd better explain the significance of the title here, as 'Macedonia' actually means 'fruit salad' in Italian, hence the reference point above. With that issue roundly cleared up, the task was trying to determine whether the separate elements of the Macedonian capital and surrounding area were enough pieces of tasty fruit which would validate your sampling this dish. In terms of value for money, as with neighbouring Kosovo, this is one of the more bargain basement ends of the European travel scale, and the cost of living is reflected in the overall state of the economy. That said, the reference points in Skopje, the Macedonian capital, are pleasing enough to the eye, and come across as a conglomeration of styles pertaining to a handful of other nations, namely Greece, Turkey, Serbia, ... read more

Hello my fellow travellers! I slept very well tonight at Mihajlo's house and we started the day in a easy tempo with a nice breakfast and a rest in their garden and I got to eat peaches from their own tree! After the breakfast we loaded up in Mihajlo's car and he drove me around in Veles, giving me a comprehensive tour of the city which I really enjoyed. He showed me the local sights and told me about many aspects of the town. He is very knowledgeable and I really liked Veles a lot, he took me up to visit a World War II memorial that commemorates the fighters from Veles. The memorial is is made to look like a poppy flower and inside is a blossoming tree that represents liberty. He also showed me ... read more

Being a travel agent in London, I get so sick of sending my clients to Tenerife or Malaga. So when I organise my own trips I am immediately drawn to the lesser known, more adventurous places. So for a couples weekend, rather than go to Paris or Rome I decided that we’d go to the Balkans – starting and ending in Macedonia. Macedonia is one of these places that is misconceived as being a terrible holiday choice. For that reason I obviously wanted to go, as I knew I would be able to avoid the average British tourist. We flew into Skopje, the capital of what is technically called the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia. I know this because every time I called the country simply ‘Macedonia’ my Greek friend would kick me and then correct ... read more

Skopie and Ohrid Republic of Macedonia 10 to 14 June 2013 At the Bulgaria-Macedonia border crossing, on the Macedonia side, we were nearly turned back because we did not have the International Green Card for insurance of the vehicle. In several of the recent countries we have visited (Serbia and Bulgaria), the vehicle is more important than the people, regarding official documentation. We have to show the ownership and registration papers for the vehicle, but additionally in Macedonia we needed the insurance documents. The Customs guy told us we either had to go back to Bulgaria or pay another 480 Euro for Insurance. We knew we had already paid this in The Netherlands. I suddenly remembered I had an email from the person in Holland who we had bought the vehicle through and the email attachment ... read more

Hey folks, I just spend the last month in Macedonia and Greece trying to understand what should be the name of what certain people call FYROM and others Macedonia. The Greek does not like that region a lot and could not stop debating as soon as you say the name Macedonia. In the country itself, must people have better things to talk of and some are making everything in their power to upset the Greek the most they can. Building an enormous statue of Alexander the Greet was a great way to do so... If you take out the politics (which is the main subject in that part of the world), you will discover an amazing country, full of stunning landscape, charming mix of culture. In Macedonia there is something for everyone. If you enjoy hiking ... read more
