Having visited the northern Balkan countries in June I decided to wrap up the remaining southern countries during my trip in August which is why I found myself in a hostel in Skopje. I bumped into 3 friendly Brits in my hostel and our paths would cross several times over the next few days. We teamed up with 2 Aussie girls and the six of us headed off to the old town for the first night of boozing for the trip. We ended up in a microbrewery drinking out of his huge container and listening to a local band singing eighties pop songs - Rick Astley is still not giving you up:-). The next day I had a walk round the town centre and like many other Balkan cities is it undergoing a huge rebuilding phase, ... read more

Had I reached Macedonia yet? I wasn’t sure. I knew very little of the place before I arrived but the little information I had I played dumb. I knew Greece and Macedonia had some problems, but what? As a person with a Greek background could it be possible to fall in love with a place, which I should say doesn’t exist but does depending on whom you talk to and what name you call it. All I knew was that Macedonia there are two – one in northern Greece, the other a country from the Former Yugoslavia. The other thing was that Macedonia claims Alexander the Great as their own. With that little knowledge I set off to get an understanding of a place 7 years ago I heard as ‘boring, don’t bother.’ When I left ... read more

After about a week of fun in with Cvetko in Sofia I headed westwards to the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. The reason for the convoluted name is that Greece - good old fashioned nationalists that they are insist on it because they believe it implies territorial claims over Greek Macedonia - which they obtained in 1912 in a carve-up of Macedonia post defeat of the Ottoman Turks. I was headed to the capital of Skopje, about 220 kilometres away and after six uneventful hours on a bus and 1 easy border crossing later - I was there at the bus station. The ‘Tourist Information’ sign frustratingly only led to led to an empty room so I ignored all the cab drivers stood outside trying to rip me off and in the wilting heat (this blog ... read more

FYROM The country doesn’t really have a name. The official name of this nation of 2 million, by default, is The Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, which basically means, “we used to call it Macedonia,” with the implication that you can call it whatever the hell you want to call it now. So some people call it Macedonia, but honestly the whole Greek peninsula used to be called Macedonia as a geographic region. They really don’t know what to call it. They have a distinct flag that amounts to something like “Japan meets New Mexico” and I applaud their originality. I visited Macedonia with my friends from Kosovo because of proximity and because, it’s essentially the only place Kosovans can visit. Because, despite the fact that Kosovo is an established, modern democracy, it hasn’t secured solid ... read more

First of all, must say... not a big fan of Skopje. Leaving tomorrow via night train to Belgrade, Serbia and hoping for more to do. And I apologize as this seems to be a lengthy entry... But starting from the beginning-- left London Gatwick on the 10th, fearing the weather from "Britain's worst storm in years!" would postpone this very anticipated trip; Step and I slept at the airport and I slept the entire flight so I assume nothing eventful happened. Over Bulgaria we got a glimpse of the ample farmland and the extreme contrast of poor communities to more modernized cities, where neighborhoods were essentially set in mud and made pretty basic out of random materials. Landed in Sofia, Bulgaria. Big city, very nice, pretty typical busy/bustling city life. Bulgaria Took the bus (which we ... read more

Hi guys - me back. I had to let Scott send the last one as I was in bed poorly sick (Otherwise know as being pathetic). Not with a hangover but with flu...............not man flu but proper flu. I'm still not great,or anywhere near great but I got some tablets today and feel I am on the mend. I think what Scott put sums up the last few weeks. He did fail to mention the ice on the inside of the windows (prob where the flu came from!). Galipoli was amazing, interesting and very moving. I did enjoy Turkey but really did feel it was time to move on. We finally left the posh hotel - even tho our clothes were not quite dry (Where yoou can get roome by the Hr?!?!). We headed out of ... read more

Montenegro & Bulgaria - September 29th - October 7th While in Kosovo we found out that due to boarder restrictions we could not leave Kosovo through Serbia if we entered in Montenegro. Just like that, our plans changed and we were off to Skopje, Macedonia instead of going directly to Bulgaria. It's a bit of a cliche but things really do happen for a reason. While in Skopje we stayed at the City Hostel and were greeted by the owner, Bobbie. He was one of the most helpful and friendly hostel owners we have met on the trip so far. He went out of his way to help us plan our stay in Skopje and even arranged for a taxi to take us to Matka Lake. This was definitely the highlight of our stay in Skopje. ... read more

While the bus ride to Skopje was pretty uneventful, my quest to find my hostel once I got there was anything but. Gah. One thing I seemed to have forgotten (damn short-term memory, haha) is that taking the bus typically results being dropped off in the middle of nowhere (AKA not exactly in the bus station ^^;;;) at your final destination. I had to take a stab at which stop I was supposed to get off, and once I did, I could only pray that I was in the right city. Haha, such a loser I am! But all is well and good -- I took a risky gamble (it was snowing quite a flurry at the bus stop!), and thankfully it turned out to be somewhere in Skopje. Visibility was rather terrible, so I folded ... read more
