Hi Everybody! We spent Saturday afternooon exploring Thessaloniki. We went to the Roman Forum, Paradisos Bath ruins, the Arch of Galerius, the White Tower, several Orthodox churches. We went through a park and I saw a woman jumping rope, my favorite exercise. I tried to communicate with her and found out that she was from Afghanistan. Today has been great! We caught an early train from Thessaloniki to the capital of Macedonia, Skopje. We had a cabin with 6 seats that we shared with a super, nice guy - Chad. He is working for a contractor in Kosovo. Our trip flew by as he filled our brains with lots of interesting facts about this region of the country. Near the end of our trip, another American joined us. He was visiting a former Yale classmate from ... read more

Meeting Macedonia Europe » Macedonia FYR » Skopje By TheKeithsMarch 28th 2007Alana and Bryan Keith After yet another overnight, “sleepless” train to Thessaloniki and a 5-hour train ride through the Macedonian countryside, we finally arrived in Skopje, the capital city. Macedonia is a relatively new country, having just received its independence from Yugoslavia in 1992. The old communist grasp could still be felt throughout the city, as there was an overall heaviness in the air - lots of gray buildings, gray skies, gray clothes, gray faces. But the dogs were friendly, and we enjoyed our brief visit to Skopje. On the second day, we took a taxi to Lake Mat... read more

so yea ive had quite the issue updating this blog, seeing as i've come across only power outages and shitty internet.... saturday afternoon i left veliko turnovo after a ridiculously crazy night and a tearful farewell. i can't wait to come back next summer. a bunch of us headed for sofia where i spent the first night at a hostel and the second night with a friend from switzerland who works in sofia. we spent saturday night at a nice restaurant followed by a cool bar behind the national art gallery and then a club called 'my mojito'. naturally, i had a mojito. the next day i moved over to the apartment and spent the day roaming around the city mainly with ira (ukraine), stephanie (BC), and adrien (switzerland). it was RIDICULOUSLY hot so we pretty ... read more

I visited the Gostivar Macedonia in 2004. I have been notime to spend the location but I took some photos from this place. Albanians and Turkish peoples live there with the Macedonians. I learned that 60% of Gostivar peoples are Albanians. Some of the local buildings and market places name are written with the three different languages. 2004 Yili Eylül Ayinda Yağmurlu Bir Günde Ziyaret Etme Şansi Buldugum Gostivar Birçok Tarihi Mekana Sahip. Sadece 1-2 Saat Zamanim Olmasina Rağmen Bir Çok Fotograf Çektim. Gostivar Makedonyanin Türk Nüfusu En Yoğun Şehirlerinden Birisi. Çoğunluğu Arnavut ve Türk Kökenli insanlardan Olusuyor. Makedon Nüfusu ise Türk ve Arnavutlara Nazaran Daha Az... Keşki Daha Çok Vaktim Olsaydi... Much to my surprise, getting out of Albania was rather trouble-free. I managed to board the bus mildly conscious for a five-in-the-morning departure for Korçe. Having arrived a few minutes early and aware that Albanians share the same concept of punctuality as the rest of their Mediterranean neighbors (which is zero), I darted off for an espresso only to be told to get right back on the bus immediately. The driver saw no other passengers this steamy morning and decided it was time to go. We were out of Berat before 4:50. Go figure. The bus to Korçe takes a circuitous route, in an almost 180-kilometer clockwise crescent. According to maps, there exists a road that covers that distance in more or less ninety kilometers. But when I inquired why no bus traveled the apparently shorter ... read more

Still in the train after Serbia i got to Macedonia. After heavy armed border controlls after Presevo Valley at Kumanovo i could continue towards Skopje and on to Geveglija on the border with Greece. Here i also took pictures and enjoyed the views. A change of climate told me i was getting close to Greece. The weather was getting better, sunnier and hotter. Macedonia was small village after small village and you could see many mosques in every village you passed. Far you could see the mountains and the nature was beautiful. The closer to greece the drier it got.... read more
