I left Europe for Asia in October 1996. I had a good education, a pretty solid Economics degree from a top European University...some savings from working all over Europe and Africa for Club Med while being a full time student in Belgium...I was ready for an adventure...that I was sure would last at least for few weeks or months...it was, 17 years ago... Back end of July, I did something that made Leslie laugh a big one! I moved back to my parents...with my two kids and we registered again as living...in Europe! Yes, can't tell you how much fun Leslie had...wow, papa is moving back to his parents...so much fun! No I didn't lose my job, no I haven't changed my plans...and no, I'm not in the middle of a middle-age crisis...so why than....well...simple! Disclaimer....I ... read more

We are so close to Luxembourg that it would be crazy not to take the short drive and add another country to those we have travelled to.We are not sure what sightseeing there is to do but there has to be something different to add to our memories of this trip. After being out for longer than we anticipated yesterday we thought that starting out earlier today would mean we might get home a bit earlier. The area we are staying in is very quiet and peaceful and the forest gives one the feeling of it being eco-friendly.However,the same cannot be said for some of the surrounding towns of Amneville and today as we headed north towards Luxembourg we came across a town with an unfortunate name in Uckange and another ugly blot on the landscape. What ... read more

An overnight train to Paris, a morning train to Metz, and an afternoon train to Luxembourg had us arriving in Luxembourg City around 1:30pm. We got to our hotel and sat down while waiting to check in when we heard a man yelling outside, next a man Usain Bolt style sprinted past while the older gentleman ran behind him, he had been mugged. Hmmm... Not the best first impression of Luxembourg or the area that we were staying in. We were in desperate need of showers after the extremely sweaty day before in Toulouse followed by a long night and day on trains, so we grabbed a quick kabob and falafel to eat and headed back to the hotel for showers. We got in on a Sunday meaning that the entire city is shut down for ... read more

Almost as soon as my exams came to an end, I made my second travel of the year, back to the Netherlands after less than 5 weeks in order to fufill three tasks. To recover from the intense final weeks of university, to visit my good friends Roel and Sandy, and also to fill in one of the holes in my visited countries map. Straight from winning at the casino the night before, I took a coach from Luton to Stansted on Saturday 18th to fly to the city of Eindhoven in the southern Netherlands where we watched the final of the Eurovision whilst being filmed for Dutch TV, where I was even interviewed on my views of the Dutch song. The following day Roel and I made the trip to Luxembourg where awaiting us were ... read more

We made it to LUXEMBOURG, Belgium, Germany and France not to mention starting in the Netherlands, Woolly thinks he might have set a new Mammoth World Record for travelling through FIVE countries in one day, we are sending his claim off for verification! Woolly says – what a day, I’m sure it’s a mammoth Record. Having filled up on croissants and jam, Ian and Jo were naughty by making sandwiches with the bread and cheeses on offer, we felt set for the day. First job was to locate the camping shop we had been directed to to replace lilo Lil, it was closed!!! Jo took a run into the big shop across the road and arrived back clutching Lil 2, so with beaming smiles we set a course for Luxembourg. Driving through the last of the ... read more

Not a bad nights sleep. The few motor homes (two of us) were very quiet and the locals in the their beach huts spent the night quietly. The bells were on curfue after dark The only noise came from the unruly ducks who made such a noise all night probably mating and sleeping the day off quietly. And the sound of the trains thundering through the station in the town. I don’t know if the train stopped at Berges and if it did where it came from or went to. There was however a bus station next door which looked well used. We did not get any chance to update blogs as there was no WiFi on the site. Our French Toggle phone worked once we had changed the phone number to a French one. A ... read more

Hi all, Luxembourg was another highlight-of-a-hidden country. It boarders between Germany, France and Belgium, and I had to see what made this place it's own country. As soon as I was busing in from the airport, I started to see a trend of old and new architecture. Glass buildings with unique designs surrounded the outer area, and approaching the heart of the city, historical brick and stone building started to contrast the glass, and then take-over the scene. I fell in love with the city right away. I walked the streets, passing signs that informed pedestrians and drivers exactly how many parking spaces were left in each lot. I wove through looming brick building and arch-ways as I made my way into the heart of the old city. Each street had a view, either cobblestone leading ... read more

I decided to come to Brugge - what a good call that was. I drove through the centre of town looking for the Bauhaus Hostel (which, incidently I booked only 40km away). I have a good feeling abou this place, I even negotiated the roundabouts without a problem!!! I arrive safely at the hostel and within minutes have met and am chatting to a fellow biking traveler from NZ, Grant you star, brilliant advice and a map that is invaluable. I had a wander into town and HELL!!! it took my breath away - Brugge is beautiful. Monday night sees me bumping into 3 lads, 1 from Turkey and two scottish lads - one from Pitlochry. Its such a small world. I went for a quick drink with them berfore getting back to the hostel where ... read more

I have never been one to go to a country to just tick it off the list but for the first time I did it. I had no real interest in coming here but since I was around the area I thought what happens if somewhere down the track I have one country left to see and I have to travel all the way from Australia to see it. I was in Germany Trier, which is an ideal place to stay overnight and do a half day trip in both places. Trier and the small European country Luxemburg. Trier was briefly the capital of the Western Roman Empire and was the most important Roman city north of the Alps. Because of this location it provides a chance to see Roman ruins in a different light and ... read more

People often ask me what my background is and I always answer that I am a mutt. This is very true since my relatives come from all over Europe and North America. The once thing that links all my backgrounds together is the Catholic Faith. One relative whose faith is still strong with me today is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather Henry Birren. Henry was born in Steinsel, Luxembourg; a small village just north of Luxembourg City, on August 10, 1812. Henry would later marry, emigrate to the US, settle and raise is ten children in Chicago. Henry was very involved in St. Michael Parish in the old town area of Chicago. In fact, a cross that he craved still adorns the steeple of the church. Having the opportunity to visit his home country and the small village ... read more
