Today we took a day trip to Luxembourg City...the train ride was about three hours and was, to me, almost the best part of the trip...the country is beautiful and gets progressively so the closer to the border and closer to the mountains you get...we spent a little time in the city exploring and had a great time...we are now on our last day in Bruxelles...most of the day is preparation for the rest of the trip which will be spent driving aimlessly through wine country near the Rhine...we have an idea of where our destinations are, but depending on how it times out, we may stray a bit...going to have lunch and then admire some of what's left of the art noveau movement here before saying goodbye to Belgium...talk to you soon...... read more

I don't even know how to say hello in Luxembourgerish so I'm not going to try, I should have probably added some of this on the last one but we did some stuff in Strasbourg in the morning before we left for Luxembourg. We visited the Council of Europe, which is an independent body from the EU and still has some role, I don't know how to explain it really because it's ridiculously complicated and no one wants to hear me drone on and on about the inner workings and compositions of EU institutions and their competencies. With it's extravagant wood interior and green furnishings (think lime green and hunter green had a kid), it looked like it lurched right out of the 1970s! The tour of the hemi-cycle was cool as well, but the building ... read more

We have had an amazing week here in Luxembourg, we caught up on some laundry, sleep and missed meals. Katie accidentally left her glasses in Nantes at Agathe's house and they kindly mailed them to Luxembourg so our stay here was a little longer then planned as we were waiting for the package to arrive not that we minded staying a few extra nights! Thursday we got to sleep in and stay in our PJs the whole day! Friday went for a walk around Sarah's little village Delhiem while Valerie slaved away in the kitchen all day preparing a delicious 7 course meal for the family and another couple that came over.... actually had to lie down and rest our tummies half way through dinner in order to make room for the next dish. Saturday we ... read more

Already a month in... unbelievable! Had a great weekend with Agathe hung out with her friends and toured around Nantes Her mom took us to the west coast on sunday Beautiful day! she showed us how they harvest the salt from the ocean they diverge the water into little streams each more shallow than the previous until their is only a few inches of salt water which they separate into fields. during the summer the sun heats up the shallow pools and the water evaporates leaving just the salt to be harvested by hand its really interesting to see the process and the patience of these people who still work in such an traditional fashion, completely at the mercy of mother nature for the yield of each crop and all the labour without any equipment more ... read more

So much has happened since I've last updated, but I honestly don't have time to write it all down. In reality the reason I'm updating now is for the sake of my Mom and aunt Susie. They wanted me to let everyone who knows and cares that they're having a great time in Europe. They've been really great with timing! They've managed to see much more than the average person would because of their luck with timing. Today was the only time they've really strayed from their itinerary. THey went to Cologne, Germany and stopped in Trier for less than an hour on the way back to Luxembourg. They've seen everything in a whirlwind visit, so I think they're excited to see Paris in a more relaxing manor. I had dinner with them last night and ... read more

Belgium. The Netherlands. Luxembourg. Sometimes shortened to the term Benelux. I have now visited each of them! But, before I get into that, it was actually a surprisingly fun and exciting week. As you all know, Tuesday was St. Patrick’s Day. What you might not know is this is one of my absolute favorite holidays! My obsession with the Irish is shared and celebrated on this one day each year when everyone expresses their love for the Irish! So, of course, I wore green, went to an Irish pub, drank a Guinness and danced the night away. Oh, how I love St. Patrick’s Day. Another exciting point in my week came on Friday when I got to visit the Headquarters for NATO. In addition to most of the European Union institutions, the headquarters for the North ... read more

I can't write a lot, because I'm leaving in about an hour for Italy. I don't have class again until two Mondays from now. Carnival is a huge celebration in Europe for the beginning of Lent. People everywhere derss up in crazy costumes like clowns and jesters and theres lots of parties and parades. I'll be going to Venice, Cinque Terre (a group of five small towns), Florence, and Rome. Two random things about Europe that I have yet to mention...theres dog poop all over the side walks. When I go running I have to be sure to avoid this. One time I even saw someone with their dog letting it poop and then they just left without picking it up. Do they think it decomposses into the cement? Another thought...people here don't care to move ... read more

Today I was just hanging out at home when my host sister, Michelle, came up from the basement with two rabbits. They were so cute and she gave one to me to hold. She told me that she was going to the docter for the bunny to get its teeth cute because they were too long...I don't know if this is normal but I acted like it was. I decided to ask her if she wanted to make cookies with me today and she said yea. They didn't have some of the ingredients so we had to go to the grocery store after she got back with the rabbit. I had trouble finding baking soda because they didn't really know what it is. We spent probably 3 times as long in the store as it should ... read more

Here's a few funny things that happened this week: This week I received a package from my parents : ) There were some yummy chocolate chip cookies in the package that I shared with some people at school...everyone definitely appreciated a treat from home. One kid proclaimed that the cookie "tasted like America". This was pretty funny, but so true! I guess we're all starting to really miss some things about home (like skim milk because they drink 3.5% here). I offered some cookies to my host family and they enjoyed them as well. From their reactions it seems that they've never had a chocolate chip cookie before. This really surprised me, but then I realized that I haven't really seen any cookies since I've been here. The only ones I've seen are in tourist cities ... read more
